@v8matey Thanks v8matey. :) All the meshes were done by me, and some of them are speedtrees. You can find more information on my website (link in description).
About the breeze, it's there but you can't really see it in the video. Feel free to download the map to take a look at it in real-time.
@ninjamonkeynorris yes he unreal development kit is free but takes up a gig of you hard drive but is well worth it there are so many things you can do with udk
great job, you could do a tutorial how to make a scene of the forest? sorry for abuse, but would love to learn to do a scenario like yours, sorry for broken English lol
Very, very inspirational (is there even word like that ? :D). Looks better than crysis, although I bet you didn't used real-time lighting all the way, and prebaked, to keep performance up ?
@iniside Thanks! To get the best performance out of UDK you need to use a combination of prebaked shadow maps and cascaded shadow maps. I think Crysis uses a similar system too.
@iniside I think that would create a LOT of performance issues. After a fast reading of the "Finding Next Gen – CryEngine 2" white paper (just google for it), which is written by a Crytek developer and provides an overview of the engine, it seems that CryEngine 2 is using a combination of prebaked shadow maps and dynamic shadows.
@SBWapner It's not that different in the end. :) The quotes below are taken from the "Secrets of CryENGINE 3 Graphics Technology" presentation at SIGGRAPH 2011, slide 19 and following:
- Cascaded shadow maps used since Crysis 1.
- We always split omni-directional lights into six independent projectors, Shadow map for each projector is scaled separately.
- Big texture atlas to pack all shadow maps each frame after scaling.
Anyways, this is a very nice map. I'm just now getting into SDK's and all. I have both CryEngine 3 and UDK installed atm. Can't decide which I want to focus on. I was leaning towards CryEngine, but your video and one titled Autumn Park have kinda made me lean back towards UDK. :P
@SBWapner Eheh, thanks. :) Yeah, UDK is a really cool development platform. I only took a fast look at the first version of the CryEngine SDK when it came out and it looked really cool too. In the end I think it's just a matter of taste: chose the one you feel more comfortable with and then stick with it.
I wish I had you hanging around the Carnivores Saga, all the other fans who hang around have 0 skill at anything other than complaining and suggesting bad ideas >.>
@minifloppyit what company? I know spark was looking for people. Is it them? And another question. Where did you learn to do this? I am trying to teach myself but it is so hard.
@coolguylstan The company is called Black Lion Studios. I've learned all this over the years with the help of books, tutorials and forums. Good places to start are the UDK forums and the Polycount forums, just don't give up. ;)
Nice work! I had no idea UDK had this kind of power in it. I downloaded and had a play on your map too, really great work, although I wish I knew how to bump up the graphic settings. Thanks for posting.
@unb0xed Thanks for trying it out, glad you liked it. You can bump up the settings by editing the UDKEngine.ini file (just search for it inside the installation directory).
To have information about the settings you can google for "UT3 ini tweak guide", you'll find a lot a pages describing UT3 settings which are very similar to the UDK ones. If you mess things up just delete the file and start the game: a new file will be created automatically using the default settings.
@minifloppyit Okay cool thanks I will check that out now. :) I have been using Maya now for a about a year but with sort of film VFX in mind, I'm starting to wonder If maybe my skills are more suited to game design.I just started to build a small map similar to this to give it a go.If you could point me in the direction of any tutorials you found that helped you get started, that would be awesome. I need to get an idea of what not to do when modelling for UDK basically, how to keep it clean.
@unb0xed You can find a lot of good resources and tutorials in the Documentation section of the official UDK forums. It's surely the best place to to get started.
Oh my dear mother! That's so very beautiful, that I almost got tears in my eyes! Very impressive work, mate (as usual)! Can't wait to upgrade to Win7 and UDK, to able to jump in your world and enjoy this beauty! Keep it up, because you rock!!! :)
Dude this looks awesome do you think someone would be able to use this for there projects???

@MaFrEuDs1 The video was rendered using UDK to avoid slow-downs due to recording software like Fraps. It runs at 30 FPS.

Really nice map! all tho are they most of the assets udk supplies? or did you make them yourself? or did you use speed tree?
Only critics is its very still, no wind or breeze. Its missing a misty feel, like a faint blue or white color fog near the player..?
Also there is no grass sprites 1:15 and your waterfall is very very impressive! =)

Nah. In CryEngine everything is realtime. There is no static lighting.
Oh good to know anyway. I'm currently trying to adapt UDK to non-staic lighting.
