This is such a beautiful song.. it's originally a Pacific Islander lullaby that a young old sings to his crying baby brother as both their parents died.
I remember sitting on an abandoned dock, listening to this, watching the water and the full moon...wishing it would all work out well. - That was back when I was playing a cassette tape in my walkman. I guess i's been a while, but wow, great short track - memories. :)

Sad case of cultural misappropriation. The sampled melody is called “Rorogwela” sung by Afunakwa, a Solomon Islands woman, recorded by ethnomusicologist Hugo Zemp. Originally released by UNESCO. Deep Forest’s subsequent claim that the track had UNESCO’s approval was found to be invalid. Deep Forest had gone ahead and used the track without Afunakwa's consent. BTW Solomon Islanders are not a Pigmy race of people from Africa. They are part of the islands of Melanesia in the South Pacific ocean.
@FluttershySays Because we people dont want to know about your brony shit (which is fucking weird anyway). But yet you mention it fucking everywhere. If you like it,fine. Thats your thing. But we dont want to know about your yiffi and weird tastes.
@MrSirDel I might sound stupid with the previouse comment what I surely did..
And you know what it is.. Most of the time they prefer to be poor instead of living in the city where there is food and such. We western people don't really understand that 'cause we are money horny.. That is why I actually made the previouse comment to act like a stupid western person, seemingly you don't get the meaning that is why I made this endless comment for you.
The sample for this song was stolen without permission from the Solomon Island woman featured as well as the ethnomusicologist who recorded it. The money for album sales went in the pockets of corporations and the supposed 'world music artists. Great message to send to the world.
Somebody please get rid of the diabolical Mtv logo. It's a horrifying juxtaposition to have a conglomerate symbol in a Third World Country. Geez, why not plaster World Bank and IMF images too? I hate Mtv. They "killed the Radio Stars" and "musicians" no longer had to be gifted or talented; they just had to have a "look." Sell - out industry.
@blueguitarblue Yes the melody is a direct sample from an anthropological recording of a woman singing a beautiful folk song (story of an orphan child) from Malaita, Solomon Islands, in the south Pacific. Beautiful rendition by Deep Forrest but It is regretful that MTV pop culture misappropriates our rich traditional culture in such a way by making the video clip depict Africa! This maybe for the sake of art but it still doesn't take away the humiliation of being misrepresented.
You people who are so loyal - stuck in tradition just don't get art. Art is whatever medium that evoke ur attention and emotion , it is freelance , unbinded by your rules . I see how life is , without our civilization and iPhones ! Just u and ur environment ! Free and strong!
@jprajkumar; "without our civilization and iPhones ! Just u and ur environment ! Free and strong!" I suspect we wouldn't be free and strong for long; more likely riddled with disease, dead by thirty and presumably, unable to make comments on YT.
This is like how Enigma used a sample of a traditional Taiwanese chant and everyone thinks it is Native American. Even I thought it was when I first heard it. Then I listened to real Native American chants and they sounded nothing like in the song.

@GreenEyesGirl76 What I meant by "real" was that the chants and songs were in their original form without any of my preconceived thoughts about how Native American music should sound like. IMO, if you like a piece of music, then listen to it. If I like a certain type of music, I'll usually look it up on Wiki. If you just search "native american pow wow" on YT you can hear original music and will be able to make up your own mind.
this melody belongs to Malaita , Solomon Islands. the video depicts Africa - it is a complete misconception of the truth. proud to be from the Solomon Islands !
@chekkafide Wantok, Yes the melody is a direct sample from an anthropological recording of a woman singing a beautiful folk song (story of an orphan child) from Malaita, Solomon Islands, in the south Pacific. @dingokickin Young brother, young brother you be quiet Although you are crying to me Your father has left us He has gone to the place of the dead Protect the head of the living, Protect the orphan child Young brother, young brother hey? although you are crying to me Your father has left us He has gone to the place of the dead Protect the head of the living, protect the orphan child 2011 and still listening
I'm 14 and I'm really posessed with times and memories and music that reminds me of certain memories... like this song is representing a time that was very dark; me and my friends were filming a little shortfilm that was an englishproject for school and by that time I listened alot to this song and now when I hear this: I am reminded...
