First time hearing this song...my 10,000th time hearing Lou's voice...Fuck, man. I know the lyrics from only hearing it one time...And this song hits me hard.
@streetkicks14 you don't need to, asshole. your pathetic existance will be measured by your irrelevance. oh yeah, and while yr down there ... blow me.
shooting billards in the run down poolhall could not be any better with Lou on the airways man them times our so long ago......and yet still mean so much to me.
I lost a friend in December. One night me and my friends drove to Kerkrade to see him at the funeral home. He was wearing his favorite sweater, had his teddy-turtle with him in the open casket, and we stood there and tried to cope with it. When we drove back in the dark, we sat quietly in the car, listening to this song..... And you know, I never met someone who doesn't like this. Everyone always kinda quiets down in those first two minutes. Unbelievable music. Ciao, Fly!
It draws the listener in. The narrator (could be a guy on the corner) is laying down his story of regret and looking back at his past mistakes and things that slipped through his fingers. Notice how the tempo builds a bit like a chugging steam engine.
Very nicely filled up with tasty guitar inflections and competent backing vocals.
@antoniosann i'm only 29 but when ever I hear the song I think about being 18 and 19 years old and all the crap being that young brings you. I also think about my time in S.F. and I swear the line "the city is a funny place, something like circus or a sewer." describes the Tenderloin to a capital T. it's funny how some artist, like Reed, can right something so long ago that can still touch the young of today, few artist (let alone musicians) can do that.
This song is well ahead of its time. and like "Take a walk on the wild side" in terms of style is unique. That means that it does not fall in any cathegoriy of music.
Quite possibly Lou's most honest song - and the closer you get to the real Lou Reed, the better the song is! I love this ... it's the part of Lou Reed that I'd really love to know ...
@Molesworth2K I agree - i used to be a big lou fan until I got sick of his apathetic junkie attitude. but I'm goin back through my playlist now and there are some lou reed songs that really are gems. i don't care much for the lou reed in the interviews but this one isn't so bad!
When he mentions at the end that he's sending this out to Lou and Rachel, I think Rachel was his girlfriend at the time. Only thing was, Rachel was a transvestite. Typical Lou Reed.
@tracygalvin I might only be 32 but man do I wish I lived in those days,my pops was the biggest Lou Reed fan in the world and outplayed this album three or four times. When I asked him one time to tell me what it was like to live in such a unique era of music he said,"Well hell, they kept letting Lou make albums,so that should tell you something."I only now get what he meant.
This was difinitely '79 tunes early high school, finding songs like this made a new understanding.. one definitely needed at that time... but definitely a great change from the yound life... alot of his other albums too.. I love that the "City is a funny place,,, different people have paculiar tastes....".............

The real genius of Lou Reed emerges in the line "He said that I was a little too lightweight to play linebacker,so I'm playing right end".Spoken just like a kid in high school.True brilliance is rarely obvious.Thank you Lou.
the brillance of lou's work is something that we as music loving humans will be forever indebt. this is one of those songs that is like looking at a beautiful painting or reading a novel. mr reed, god bless you. the depth of your art will never be fully understood by most people but those of us who recognize it have been blown away over the years with your countless masterpieces. please never stop making music
this song makes me feel like i really am in coney island,on some of its roller coasters leading me right into the sea's deepest blue waters.................. <3

Not too many of you will remember this one. But for those who do, and for those who happen to get into Lou Reed...it's worth the 6 minutes it takes to listen.
One of my favourites. 'Achilles last stand' of 'Presence' came the same year from Led Z. Well and a lot of punk...:-)...'death of rock n' roll' I believe was written by Todd R that same year. Fitting.

Gravyballs - I'm right there with you. Thanks for explaining how great this song is.
It's my favourite Lou Song, and that is saying something.
He really knows how to pair music with lyrics.

It is Lou's most under rated record. And a precursor to his great work on Blue Mask.

I love his "songspeak" like a narrator, it gets you hooked. thats why lou's one of my faves. Underneath that "fuck you" exterior is a good guy.
