  • i remember thinking when they rolled this one out ...hmm too big alot of stress so when they finished it they took it for a test around the Scilly isles in poor weather, not a wise move as you really have to know that area WELL and they had some problem, BUT I think what happened is they hit rocks but did not say that at the time and I think that weakened her, I will probably get roasted here for that opinion but..... C'est la vie

  • thanks for posting this video! This was a great design. years ahead of its time. a newer version would have curved foils, curved beams and hard hulls. but she was still incredible!

  • I won a ride on this boat. After it broke they let me crawl all over it in the shed in Totnes.

It was a piece of art.

Needless to say I never got that ride. Bloody shame.

  • Paul, I just remembered, You gave me the tour.

  • i have read the book 'the race' and have to say that from what ive read in that book and others, team philips is, in my opinion, the greatest innovation when it comes to maxi cat sailing. thank u Goss for giving us this boat!! its so good that as of 10 mins after i read the book, team philips earned itself the prime piece of real estate of my door in the form of an A3 poster! rock on! sail hard! no regrets!

  • @element9977 I agree, it was the best of them all. They should leave the designer alone, after they rebuilt and beefed up the structure when the bow de-laminated and separated, it worked fine. I personally like to see another race, starring Team Phillips II as I wasn't yet old enough to understand the race at the time it was ran (I was 7). If this ever happened, I would be interested in crewing. Thanks for your time, Roy Conrad.

  • @majorminors @majorminors Thank you for your reply! good to know this boat has not been entirely forgotton!I too was only 7 when The Race was contested. however, it was recently announced, that in about 2013, Bruno Peyron is running another Race!!! Follow the action at the website. I cant wait! i will be 20 in 2013 so i hope i can score a ride on one of the no doubt extreme racing machines!! Hope to see you there! Sail Hard!!

  • @element9977 Thanks! I hope so to!

  • What they were doing about 1.41 min with theirs hands?

  • Cracking the whip.....

  • Ok but needs music!

  • oh noooo please !! come on don't polute this video with poor music like i hear on every single sailing videos....let hear the natural sounds of a boat cruising...

  • No I am thankful for the absence of distortion guitars cum machinegun drums.

Yet there is another catamaran film with Sting and S Wonder: a brand new day ,quite good.

  • Shame Adrian 'got the mumbers wrong' on that one-I'm sure build technology will catch up and prove him right. Was fed up with all the 'expert' critics saying cats need crossbeams. They missed the whole point of pushing the boundaries and taking risks.Would love to see more footage

  • I think you are right in principle. Adrian´s calculations could not have been THAT wrong.

But how can a hull break like a wet cigarette in a smooth ride at 4 Bft.? Material? Sure they just used the best. Sure, there will be a next "The Race" and hopefully there wil be some ambitious architects as courageous as Adrian.

  • team phillips was plagued with build problems, the bow break was as a result of poor bonding to the core. then again, building in house for the project was very ambitious, the best carbon builders would have struggled with this boat. good to see boundries pushed tho, bugger the naysayers.

  • great stuff , this should have been a great boat, any more vid footage of her any one

  • bloody scary boat-a little too extreme, thanks for posting
