Also i would like point out here the living standards are high in Dubai. the hard you try you go further. this is a land of opportunities.

I have a very clear inside view of what is going on, or not, in this case. Living standards are high in Dubai, but not for construction workers, whose treatment is a disgrace.

@chanctonbury63 it doesn't mean the works stopped because you couldn't sell your products. as far i have seen labors are treated well than any other Gulf country in the region. you can find out how far the Government concern about the safety and health if you visit the UAE labor Law website. may be there are companies who are not abide by the law. for the sake of that you can't blame on Government.

@samfrmsl The Government is responsible being the overall authority. My products go exclusively into piling marine and core concrete. As such, by Government requirement 40% of all concrete poured in Dubai will have my type of product in. Every single structure of any consequence will contain some, so sales are a very good barometer of activity. The price has dropped by 60% over 4 years. As has the price of cement. Locally produced. You have learned something here.

I have also lived and worked in the same industry in Abu Dhabi and Saudi and the low end construction labourers are treated like shit. Everybody in the industry knows it. It is an open secret. Get used to it.

Development has stopped on the palm/s. Thousands upon thousands of housing units are half finished or unsold. The debtors jails are full. The bankrupts that are not in jail have fled leaving houses flats and cars. The place is fucked.

There is a rule that says work stops when the temp. hits 50 degrees. Guess what?? The temperature `never` reaches 50 C....When the recession hit employers refused to give them back their passports even when there was no work. They had to beg for food. Is this slavery? If it isnt then its not far off. I do business there but I hate it.

@elKingYola Depends on what you call slavery. Low end constructon workers are brought in on the promise of a wage they are never paid. They get maybe half. They then pay most of that back to the agent for the next 2/3 years to pay for their passage. Their passports are taken from them. They are housed in really shitty accomodation, walled in, out in the desert, often 6 to a room. They must do all their cooking and washing themselves. I live in dubai and this is not how it looks now.. This is a very old video (might have been uploaded fairly recently) but its prob from 2009.. It's much less sandier.. The buildings are completed.. The skys are clearer etc..
