I noticed some folks here are new to the Oysterband. I defintely recommend their albums Holy Bandits, From Little Rock to Leipzeig and The Deserter, all from the '90s. Those are their best, I think. "Ride," from 1989 was pretty strong too, but more produced and funkier
@MusicWriter1965 - agreed...I do enjoy Deep Dark Ocean myself...I was introduced to this band through that album when I spent the summer along the Atlantic coast, very surreal album for a reminiscent time.
Deserters is right behind it, in my book. I liked their Oxford Girl compilation/re dedication project as well.
I love this song! My thanks to a fb friend who sent me this video. I looked up this group on Wikipedia & learned that they are from Great Britain. I'm sorry I'm late in finding out about them. I added this video to my fb page & to my online collection of YouTube music/dance video gems. That collection is called jambalayah. Most but obviously not all of the videos showcased in that collection are from African American or other Black cultures around the world.
@ThePhobia18 Sorry, no. This is an Oysterband song, from their album Holy Bandits in 1993. This video is a reworked version from a couple of years ago. Great Big Sea was the cover and, to my taste, I'm afraid I still prefer the original.
@ThePhobia18 Actually, it's an original Oysterband song (1993, written by Ian Telfer, Alan Prosser & John Jones of the Oysterband) and GBS covered it in 1995.
I keep coming back to watch/listen to this because no one is more fun to watch than their percussionist (who I understand went back to being a therapist! What a loss!) and because John Jones has such control over his magnificent voice and because I am falling in love with Alan.
I saw Oysterband for the 1st time at their 30th anniversary & they were absolutely fantastic. Their performance on "Put Out The Lights"(Unplugged) had every hair on my body stand on end.
Only discovered Oysterband through Great Big Sea when i found out "When I'm Up" is an Oysterband song.
This is the 1st time i have seen this video & one of the best versions i have seen of it yet ,even though traveling from Scotland 2 see Great Big Sea live in Toronto a few weeks ago takes a bit of beating !
great new song - I really enjoyed hearing this on the 30th anniversary concert tour in Salisbury, & looking forward to seeing the band again at the 2009 Wychwood festival! Definitely worth catching them live if you have a chance.
I´m From Spain and I Can´t find anything about Oyster Band. Some years ago I saw a great concert in Caceres City. They are marvellous, and this clasic version better.
Brilliant as we live in Spain now can't get to see them as often as before even though they are performing 3 gigs in Northern Spain next week can't get there to see them. So keep up the good work
I defy anyone to sit still whilst this is playing. I'm still recovering from seeing them play a few years back now..sensational live! So, if you haven't yet seen them....
Ahhh I'd give ANYTHING to see the Oysters perform like this - my own 'Little Session'. Last tour was brilliant especially Swindon, lovely dirty little back room of a pub, and this has to be the most wonderful version of a classic. BEST THING ON YOU TUBE please don't take down until it's available to buy somehow. Roll on June. (Goes to bed happy.)
Great fun - couldn't stop grinning all through this one! Hopefully there will be an enhanced CD release of the Drifter album (the 2008 Trawler??)with this video (and any others?)on it? See you at the Big Sess!
Wonderful new arrangement of an good old Oysterband classic and a teaser for the new album is say's - can't wait much more, so hopefully it's ready for the Big Session 2008.
Is it my imagination or has Oysterband re-recorded this song to sound a little more like the Great Big Sea cover version of it?
This version is better than their original one. Great song all around, one of my favorites.

Sorry: GBS covered it on "Play" in 1997. It appeared on Oysterband's "Holy Bandits" in 1993.

I wonder how this funny session sounded the moment they recorded it. ;)
This video made a grey day bright! :D

Actually, that's the current drummer, Dil Davies.
Lee (Partis) has, in fact, become a therapist, but that isn't him in the video.

Thanks for the info. I was under the impression that Lee left this year (2009).

Sorry, but John looks so uncomfortable! Maybe it's because all the others have instruments. Brilliant rendition of the song though.
