  • Makes you realise that the worst thing in nature is the human being...sadly.

    Brilliant shooting.

  • We humans do seem to stomp all over nature most of the time - in one way or another... Glad you liked the show =) Cheers!

  • So beautiful! Thank you!

  • My pleasure - I'm glad you enjoyed the show! :-)

  • I have a good collection of butterfies, caterpillars . But I've never ever seen a cocoon!

    Great shooting here.

  • The whole life cycle is pretty interesting... especially the time lapse sequences of the normally long, boring parts. :-) I've been doing the bug thing even longer than music... never seems to get old and there's always something new to learn !

  • @jcmegabyte Yes there is! I was amazed when I actually started photographing them around in NY. Always like them way back as a kid.

  • Many of these could be higher quality if I had better equipment at the time I filmed them... Hopefully even nicer stuff coming in the future :-) Thanks for the view and nice comment!

  • Spectacular colours and what an amazingly clear example of the life cycle of this butterfly!! I hope the sciences classes in California are aware of this and using it in their classrooms. In fact, these vids should be promoted in schools everywhere!! Great work!!

  • Thanks so much for the great comment :-) It would be great to see this sort of stuff getting into the educational system, and I have authorized free use of my materials for just such non-profit purposes. Let's hope all the schools haven't disabled access to YouTube from inside the classroms! XD

(habitant la campagne cela coule de source)

  • I'm happy you enjoyed the show - thank you so much for watching! :-)

  • They really do some amazing things - not only that they can manage to cover those kinds of distances, but also that they seem to be able to navigate so precisely! Other species also migrate, for example the Painted Lady butterfly will migrate in HUGE numbers in some years, almost always flying the north/northwest. They do this in both Europe and the USA. =)

  • All of your videos are sooo amazing & fantastic,,, makes me to loving our mother nature more & more. The images are shot by professionally & skillfully.besides beautifully done.

The musics"BGM" are selected to fit with the images.

I'm always grateful to watching & listening to the videos.Thank you very much for your great tasks.

  • Glad you enjoyed - I think this butterfly was long overdue for this recognition! :-)

  • @jcmegabyte it brought back so many memories for me, when i was just a kid i had the privilege of watching this happen and it made me appreciate nature so much, hence my video diary:)

  • I love butterflies! Great vid!

  • I worship who created the big and and tiny things earth and skies

    thanks for posting

  • Glad you enjoyed! Thanks so much for stopping by! :-)

  • Awesome!

  • Thanks so much for watching! :-)

  • just happening

We the ego only identify with our mind not whole as it is happening. It witnesses truth but with blind eyes.

When i was watching this, i felt that all our actions depends on what we got in our karma which no one can change they are all bound to happen. Mind just play its role as the rest of the body do or whole life cycle may have to perform. No way the world which is built on mind cannot explain it as it is happening

We quite our mind and realize what is just happening

  • Your abilities are mindblowing.

  • excelente..

  • Thanks so much! =)

  • Excellent work! We watched your video at my school ( preschool ages ), here in Greece and we loved it. You gave my students the opportunity to "study" and comprehend the metamorphosis of butterfly without so much effort! Sorry about my bad english.....

  • Your English is great (better than many Americans! XD )! Thanks so much for visiting and showing my work to the kids - it's great when science and entertainment can be all rolled into one, making things more interesting, enjoyable, AND educational for students and adults alike. Cheers! =)

  • I have a question, because ive tried rearing several butterflies myself. Do you find all of these caterpillars and butterflies or do you order them?

  • I collect nearly all the species I rear myself - as eggs, larvae, and sometimes I can get the females to oviposit in captivity. Once in a while I get livestock from friends who also collect them in the field.

If you grow the right host plants for the species that fly in your area, you can usually just collect them yourself right in your own yard. :-)

  • Love this! {{{{Hugs}}}} for you!

  • Thanks so much! =D

  • i love insects

    now i have 4 silk worms :)

  • Cool thing about insects is that you should be able to find them just about anywhere. Good luck with your silkworms! =)

  • @jcmegabyte thnx =D

don´t stop your good work at making videos ^_^

  • Nice!

  • I hope to get some more of these this year - it's a great species :-)

  • Beautiful.

  • Thanks for watching! :-)

  • beautiful work and nice video

  • Thanks so much!! :-)

  • Awesome!!!

The larvae camouflages perfectly with its hostplant. :)

  • Yea, they care pretty hard to spot! I haven't found any worms yet, but I did manage to collect the eggs when I was able to watch where the females laid them.

  • buen video muy majico

  • Thanks so much for the view and nice comment! :-)

  • Riveting! one of my favourites:)

  • ...and who would have guessed this was CA's state insect!? Glad you enjoyed! :-)

  • So amazing.

My eyes never left the screen.

    .Beautiful music.

    Thank you

  • Great comment - thanks so much! :-)

  • 3:03 - 3:06 : ROAR i'm a beats you should be afraid of me!

  • Yea, that's about as scary as they get! :-)

  • ::)) Dat very beautiful color .... dat is so amazing.. n u done a wonderful job 4 dat ....wow...dat so so beautiful @3:25...awesome ...great vdo 5* n I love it ...thanks 4 sharing jcmegabyte ::)) Happy Valentine's Day !!

  • Thanks so much for the view and great comment! Cheers! =)

  • It kind of grosses me out how they eat their shed skin... Then again, it's no worse than humans chewing their fingernails!

  • Bugs definitely do a lot of strange and not-so-appetizing things... but their survival sometimes depends on it. Humans, on the other hand, have no excuse... we're just weird! :-) Thanks for watching!

  • I remember i found a catpiller once and i wanted to see what it would look like when its a butterfly so i put it into a non-seefrew container for a few mins but i forgot about it and i found it a month later and it was a butter fly, so it had been in there and made a kacoon and grew perfect inside and died :( i feel so bad. :(

  • I've nearly had the same thing happen - except that I happened to hear the bug flapping in the container and found it before it was too late. Now I use transparent, screened containers and place them where I can see them on a daily basis. :-)

  • Really great colours, it's like wathcing fireworks at the end.

  • Glad you enjoed - thanks for watching! :-)

  • krása

  • Thanks for watching! :-)

  • It is a REAL miracle !

  • That's for sure! Thanks for watching! =)

  • Very interesting , grand job ! :>)

  • Thanks so much for watching and commenting :-)

  • lindo

  • Thanks so much for watching! :-)

  • wow wow wow from Waldo Great work of art.

  • These were very cool bugs to raise, and are works of art themselves. Hard to go wrong with such great subjects! Thanks for watching :-)

  • This is so amazing!!!! How do you do this??!!!

I love caterpillars and I love holding them in my hand and let them walk all over me! :)

Of course, after they become butterflies, I enjoy them that way too!

    Great video!

  • These full life-cycle videos take a LOT of time and patience - filming in the field and studio, along with rearing the critters all the way from eggs to adults. It's quite an effort but very interesting and enjoyable all the way through. :-)

  • Glad you enjoyed - thanks for the view and great comment! =)

  • I wish we had these kind of butterflies in virginia =/

  • Hmmm.. dunno what happened to the reply I posted, so here's a re-do: The CA Dogface is definitely a west coast bug, but you may have the Southern Dogface in VA - they look very similar except for the purple-ish forewing. Check out butterfliesandmoths d_t 0rg to see which species fly in your state :-)

  • I don't think i have seen any of those since i do live in the D.C area.

  • ✿ஜீ✿Very interesting! I love it! Nature is Perfect!!Beautifull✿ஜீ✿ ;-))

    Muito interessante!!adorei!!a natureza é perfeita!!linda!! ;-))✿ஜீ✿

  • Thank you so much! :-)

  • When I saw how big the cattipillar was in the end i was like, "Crap that's gonna be one big butterfly isn't it?" then BOOM.

  • These don't too big - only about an inch and a half at best. The largest cats I've reared are Hyalophora euryalus - they get nearly 4 inches long! See the rearing page on my website for some pics of those monsters. :-)

  • Very very excellent video, thank you.

    I love butterflies....fantastic creatures...

    Mauro, Italy.

  • Thanks so much for watching and the great comment! =)

  • The silk connecting the cocoon to the twig. Supposedly stronger than steel?

  • The silk produced by various insects is extremely variable. While Lepidoptera caterpillars can make exceptionally strong silk strands, I think that spiders have them beat...

I have heard of certain spider species which spin that exceeds the tensile strength of steel (gram-per-gram), and has other elastic and fatigue properties that would make a synthetic version extremely valuable to industry.

Indeed nature can far exceed science in many cases! :-)

  • Just wondering: is your music all digitally made? As a drummer I'm curious, because there are drums in this tune that has a rebound that sounds acoustic, fx. like a 30" bassdrum!

  • Yes, all the sounds are sampled and/or synthesized. I use several synths and percussion modules (MIDI) and a number of effects processors (some built-in to the synths, some external). =)

  • My four year old daughter and I just watched this together. It was amazing and beautiful. She says they were so colorful and thank you.

  • That's so great to hear! So glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching/commenting :-)

  • Great video. Will show it to my students tomorrow. I know that they will enjoy it as I have. Thanks so much.

  • Excellent! I love to hear of my work being shown to students. Thanks for posting! :-)

  • I know the life cycle already buts its fun to watch! Thanx for posting this!

  • So far I've been able to find something unique about every species I've raised, and I've tried to show things/views in different ways to help keep it interesting. Thanks for watching and commenting! :-)

  • Oh my GOD!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for visiting! :-)

  • another great video....what you do is unique..

  • Thanks so much for your time and attention! :-)

  • Very impressive Chris. As a fellow movie maker, I can appreciate how much work went into making this video. Well done!

  • Damn now i've seen all your videos. It's 2:43 am right now, and i was actually looking for something serious, but in recommended for me, i saw the first video and i was like "cool haven't seen that before." now alot time later i have fully enjoyed all of your videos! Keep up the good work.

  • That is truly a feat of endurance! Thanks for all the time and attention and I'm glad you enjoyed watching :-)

  • cool

    Roeleke

  • Definitely is - thanks for watching :-)

  • Simply beautiful!!!! Tanks.anna.

  • Thanks so much for visiting! :-)

  • Wonderful as always. Many thanks!

  • ...and thanks to you for watching and commenting! :-)

  • What kind of video equipment and editing software are you using? Best video quality I've seen on YouTube.

  • Thanks for checking this one out! :-) Most of this was shot in medium res video with a JVC MiniDV camcorder (720x480) and Canon Powershot S5-is digital camera (video is VGA at 640x480) but some of the time lapse sequences were created with stills shot with the Canon S5, and are in 1080p (downscaled to 720p for YT) resolution. The editing is all done in Windows Movie Maker. Most all of my newer stuff is shot entirely in 1080p :-)

  • Simply beautiful!!

Some really nice shots here, especially liked the ones of the butterflies leaving their cocoons (excuse my spelling if that's wrong!)

  • Thanks so much for watching and the kind words :-) Yes, the emerging part is probably the most beautiful part of most of these life cycle vids. I like the metamorphosis parts, too. Definitely check out my Purple Hairstreaks vid for spectacular butterfly emerging sequences. :-)

  • The Catipillars are so cool ^_^

  • They are interesting little critters - thanks for watching! :-)

  • wow thankyou for the share miss marilyn. my beautiful butterflies

  • Thanks for stopping by to watch :-)

  • WoooooW ! Excellent video my friend!!

    Thank You ! ****5

    With love Marilyn

  • Thanks so much for watching, and apparently sharing this one as well! :-)

  • just BEAUTIFUL thank you so much for sharing with love

  • Thanks so much for watching! =)

  • i think you are a very smart person.. you know alot about bags thats nice

  • Thanks! :-)

  • i think they are ugly when they are caterpillars.. but they are beautiful when they turn into butterflys...do you think that when they are caterpillars they alreay know they are going to be flying soon. are they dont know that yet..?

  • I've often wondered about just how aware other creatures are of their own existance. I don't get the feeling caterpillars/butterflies do much thinking in terms of pondering the future - their brains are pretty small and simple. However, it's pretty hard to know for sure, as some fairly simple creatures show amazing logic-processing ability (such as certain spiders that calculate routes from point A to point B before they start moving). Indeed they would ugly ducking syndrome if they knew! :-)

  • how long does a butterfly lives ...butterflys are beautiful

  • Most adult butterflies can live 4-6 weeks or more if they don't get killed or eaten by something else. Those species that hibernate as adults can live for a number of months. :-)

  • thank you for answering back i love your video ..bytterflys are beautiful its a shame and sad that they only live a short life..in my nexts live i wanna come back as a big butterfly .i mean big so the birds wont eat me

  • This is incredible. These are so difficult to find and catch in the wild, and yet you've got this awesome video ...

Going to be showing this video to a classroom of third graders!

  • Excellent! I'm glad you are able to get this in your classroom. YouTube videos are blocked at many schools. Sometimes you can talk the IT guys into unblocking certain URLs but it's usually hard. Thanks for watching :-)

  • wow que preciosas imágenes, apasiona tu pasión¡¡*****

  • So glad you enjoyed - thanks for watching and the great comment :-)

  • it"s to slow!!!

  • Do you mean the HD download speed or the progress of the video scenes themselves (or something else)? I take everyone's comments into consideration when I edit my vids, so I can try to find a happy medium between too long/boring and too quick to get a good look at the subject...

  • Wonderful!

    Kisses

  • So glad you enjoyed - thanks for stopping by! =)

  • I'm glad you got to see this one - it;s like an upgraded version of the P. sennae one, without the larvae skating around, of course. Thanks for the view and comment. :-)
