The whole life cycle is pretty interesting... especially the time lapse sequences of the normally long, boring parts. :-) I've been doing the bug thing even longer than music... never seems to get old and there's always something new to learn !

Spectacular colours and what an amazingly clear example of the life cycle of this butterfly!! I hope the sciences classes in California are aware of this and using it in their classrooms. In fact, these vids should be promoted in schools everywhere!! Great work!!
Thanks so much for the great comment :-) It would be great to see this sort of stuff getting into the educational system, and I have authorized free use of my materials for just such non-profit purposes. Let's hope all the schools haven't disabled access to YouTube from inside the classroms! XD
Thank you soooooooo much for this video. I couldn't quit smiling. I want to cry knowing I got to see such a miracle. Thank you - Thank you - Thank you!
They really do some amazing things - not only that they can manage to cover those kinds of distances, but also that they seem to be able to navigate so precisely! Other species also migrate, for example the Painted Lady butterfly will migrate in HUGE numbers in some years, almost always flying the north/northwest. They do this in both Europe and the USA. =)
All of your videos are sooo amazing & fantastic,,, makes me to loving our mother nature more & more. The images are shot by professionally & skillfully.besides beautifully done.

Thanks so much for watching and commenting this one :-) I always try to synchronize the video clips to the soundtrack... I think it really helps the flow and overall quality of the show. I'm glad you liked it too!
@jcmegabyte it brought back so many memories for me, when i was just a kid i had the privilege of watching this happen and it made me appreciate nature so much, hence my video diary:)
We the ego only identify with our mind not whole as it is happening. It witnesses truth but with blind eyes.
When i was watching this, i felt that all our actions depends on what we got in our karma which no one can change they are all bound to happen. Mind just play its role as the rest of the body do or whole life cycle may have to perform. No way the world which is built on mind cannot explain it as it is happening
We quite our mind and realize what is just happening
Excellent work! We watched your video at my school ( preschool ages ), here in Greece and we loved it. You gave my students the opportunity to "study" and comprehend the metamorphosis of butterfly without so much effort! Sorry about my bad english.....
Your English is great (better than many Americans! XD )! Thanks so much for visiting and showing my work to the kids - it's great when science and entertainment can be all rolled into one, making things more interesting, enjoyable, AND educational for students and adults alike. Cheers! =)
I collect nearly all the species I rear myself - as eggs, larvae, and sometimes I can get the females to oviposit in captivity. Once in a while I get livestock from friends who also collect them in the field.
If you grow the right host plants for the species that fly in your area, you can usually just collect them yourself right in your own yard. :-)
Yea, they care pretty hard to spot! I haven't found any worms yet, but I did manage to collect the eggs when I was able to watch where the females laid them.
::)) Dat very beautiful color .... dat is so amazing.. n u done a wonderful job 4 dat ....wow...dat so so beautiful @3:25...awesome ...great vdo 5* n I love it ...thanks 4 sharing jcmegabyte ::)) Happy Valentine's Day !!
Bugs definitely do a lot of strange and not-so-appetizing things... but their survival sometimes depends on it. Humans, on the other hand, have no excuse... we're just weird! :-) Thanks for watching!
I remember i found a catpiller once and i wanted to see what it would look like when its a butterfly so i put it into a non-seefrew container for a few mins but i forgot about it and i found it a month later and it was a butter fly, so it had been in there and made a kacoon and grew perfect inside and died :( i feel so bad. :(
I've nearly had the same thing happen - except that I happened to hear the bug flapping in the container and found it before it was too late. Now I use transparent, screened containers and place them where I can see them on a daily basis. :-)
These full life-cycle videos take a LOT of time and patience - filming in the field and studio, along with rearing the critters all the way from eggs to adults. It's quite an effort but very interesting and enjoyable all the way through. :-)
Hmmm.. dunno what happened to the reply I posted, so here's a re-do: The CA Dogface is definitely a west coast bug, but you may have the Southern Dogface in VA - they look very similar except for the purple-ish forewing. Check out butterfliesandmoths d_t 0rg to see which species fly in your state :-)
These don't too big - only about an inch and a half at best. The largest cats I've reared are Hyalophora euryalus - they get nearly 4 inches long! See the rearing page on my website for some pics of those monsters. :-)
The silk produced by various insects is extremely variable. While Lepidoptera caterpillars can make exceptionally strong silk strands, I think that spiders have them beat...
I have heard of certain spider species which spin that exceeds the tensile strength of steel (gram-per-gram), and has other elastic and fatigue properties that would make a synthetic version extremely valuable to industry.
Indeed nature can far exceed science in many cases! :-)
Just wondering: is your music all digitally made? As a drummer I'm curious, because there are drums in this tune that has a rebound that sounds acoustic, fx. like a 30" bassdrum!
Yes, all the sounds are sampled and/or synthesized. I use several synths and percussion modules (MIDI) and a number of effects processors (some built-in to the synths, some external). =)
So far I've been able to find something unique about every species I've raised, and I've tried to show things/views in different ways to help keep it interesting. Thanks for watching and commenting! :-)
Damn now i've seen all your videos. It's 2:43 am right now, and i was actually looking for something serious, but in recommended for me, i saw the first video and i was like "cool haven't seen that before." now alot time later i have fully enjoyed all of your videos! Keep up the good work.
Thanks for checking this one out! :-) Most of this was shot in medium res video with a JVC MiniDV camcorder (720x480) and Canon Powershot S5-is digital camera (video is VGA at 640x480) but some of the time lapse sequences were created with stills shot with the Canon S5, and are in 1080p (downscaled to 720p for YT) resolution. i think they are ugly when they are caterpillars.. but they are beautiful when they turn into butterflys...do you think that when they are caterpillars they alreay know they are going to be flying soon. are they dont know that yet..?
I've often wondered about just how aware other creatures are of their own existance. I don't get the feeling caterpillars/butterflies do much thinking in terms of pondering the future - their brains are pretty small and simple. However, it's pretty hard to know for sure, as some fairly simple creatures show amazing logic-processing ability (such as certain spiders that calculate routes from point A to point B before they start moving). Indeed they would ugly ducking syndrome if they knew! :-)
Most adult butterflies can live 4-6 weeks or more if they don't get killed or eaten by something else. Those species that hibernate as adults can live for a number of months. :-)

Excellent! I'm glad you are able to get this in your classroom. YouTube videos are blocked at many schools. Sometimes you can talk the IT guys into unblocking certain URLs but it's usually hard. Thanks for watching :-)
Do you mean the HD download speed or the progress of the video scenes themselves (or something else)? I take everyone's comments into consideration when I edit my vids, so I can try to find a happy medium between too long/boring and too quick to get a good look at the subject...
I'm glad you got to see this one - it;s like an upgraded version of the P. sennae one, without the larvae skating around, of course. Thanks for the view and comment. :-)
It's amazing how nature has their own mind. The caterpillar naturally knows what to do :D
