@NemesiaQc1993 Make sure to choose the path wisely: whether you want Quebec to be a small French museum to amuse others in North America, Or a successful/ ever going up corner of North America, mighty yet beautiful with the unique spice of the Frenchness and the nature. If you truly love the entity called Quebec, before saying it’s French or English or even Aboriginal(where the name "Quebec" came from), you should know it’s time to get over it and break the curse/ seal of Bill 101 on Quebec.
@NemesiaQc1993 Then, what is Bill 101's oppressive control for? In this rate, even with the charm of unique Frenchness or the beauty of mountains and rivers, Quebec will go down and down til the bottom as long as Bill 101 is in place. We all know the facts/ reality surrounds us, yet we chose the wrong path to deal with it. St. Lawrence River is there to flow and for us to take advantage of, not for us to block it and stop it from flowing cuz we don’t want to have it here. You know what I mean?
@NemesiaQc1993 We discussed/ concluded that Quebec is a unique entity composed of all of French, English, Native, and the others. It is NOT France, NOR England, Russia, Italia, Japan, or China. Quebec is Quebec, and it deserves to choose the best option possible for its own prosperity and true freedom. It doesn't matter if some more people go to English schools if that means more benefits for Quebec and the people of Quebec on their path with the tool.
@NemesiaQc1993 Do you honestly believe, without Bill101 it will be Quebec completely without French in the future? Do you think giving people of Quebec including yourself the freedom of choice, and a great opportunity to learn one of the most useful languages will make the quality of life any worse?? I honestly don’t think so, at all. I would think even if you set up a tyrant law to prevent people from accessing French schools/languages in Quebec, French/ the heritage will still be there.
Even if I’m not from Arabia or France, the fact that we speak the same language is an incredible bridge. But imagine if the entire world speaks French or Spanish or English and if everybody has the same culture how it would be boring, horrible…! Its why I said it was our soul… (I didn’t say French is the soul of Quebec….. I said our language AND our culture are our soul… )
Quebecers have decided that their language and their culture are Important for them. It’s a collective choice. The French language characterise not only Montreal, but all Quebec and sorry, but the Quebec without French is something else, but not Québec. We are bound by that and other things also, and this is a wonderful feeling.
@NemesiaQc1993 In other words, in terms of our identity, Quebec is "Quebec" and Canada is proudly “Canadian/ Canadien” not French or English? How weak are you? How weak are we, in terms of our uniqueness if we were to say the language borrowed is our "soul"?
All I'm saying here is Montreal, and Quebec in general, does have the potential, and to unleash it, they really do need the freedom to replace the lock(Bill101). Remember this, if ever happens, it will truly be for great Quebec, as "Quebec".
@skyscraper03 '' Bill 101 '' is almost not applicated. The government don't do anything against the one who breaks the rules. Its almost impossible to find a job in Montreal if you speak French and not English. So be in peace lolll !
I love Quebec and Quebecers. And if I was Rene Levesque, if I had that energy and power, I would spend it to improve the lives of Quebecers. I would do my best to bring wealth and more equal rights to the people of Quebec, and make Montreal not just beautiful, but the largest, wealthiest and the most proud and loved city in all of Canada.
I'm a person thinks language is much more a tool of communication not a tool of complete assimilation especially for the 21st century and later. Look at what it looks like now in Quebec. The past glory is over and it's just a small tourist/museum town. It is even called Detroit of Canada, abandonded by Canadians, AND more importantly new immigrants. I would have never fought for keeping a certain language if that meant sacrificing so many other things.
@orlendo100 Yes, I have been to Quebec city twice. It is a small city, but a beautiful town. I'm talking about the province "Quebec", not Quebec City. For example, Montreal used to be the largest city of all of Canada not just of Quebec, but now it's almost 1/2 of Toronto, and if Quebec keeps laws like Bill 101 (the kill Quebec bill), it will soon be the third after Vancouver. I'm sure there must have been ways to make French people's lives much better, not with the extreme way of Rene Levesque.
What is the big deal with French...Then what was wrong with over 200 million American immigrants who used to speak a language/languages other than English but became the Americans (speak English now)? Are they crazy idiots ? zombies ? did they and their sons and grandsons wiped out with disease in the great land of America? I do not understand Rene Levesque. What is the big deal with speaking English or French or even Chinese? Why did Quebecers have to lose everything for keeping the language?
@skyscraper03 Because if we lost our language, we will disapear. Our culture will be destroy and our people will be assimilate by canadians. Our language is our power. And never, I say never, we will abandonned it. You speak english, we speak french. Accepts, because it will not change, partly because of great men like René Lévesque.
@skyscraper03 Our language and our culture are our soul. Its a treasure much more important than money.
You can think what you want but the Québec without French would just be as any other place in North America... even with bigger cities.
I don't have any problem with English people, I worked in Toronto all the last summer ,but when I was living there I realised how much medias are deforming reality about Québec. That's so sad.
@NemesiaQc1993 I think the language borrowed from another country across the ocean becomes “Soul” of Quebec, is a shame. For example, is “English” language soul of New Yorkers, Californians, Hawaiians, or Alaskans? No one would agree, it's just a communication language which makes all the different people and regions in the country they share, to “talk” to one another. America's Soul is “what America is”, not just or merely the language borrowed from an island nation in a different continent.
@NemesiaQc1993 Do you think all the countries in South America + Mexico are the same and have the same soul because they speak the same language? They have different identities, and each of them is a charming jewel with a colour.
@NemesiaQc1993 So don't say if Montreal was English speaking city it would be like any American cities. And don't even say Vancouver is the same as Calgary because they both speak English AND even in the same country. You realize now that English is just a tool of communication not a tool of assimilation! And I conclude Quebec losing everything for trying their best to ban English in order to "preserve" French culture (thru the French language) is wrong.
@skyscraper03 Now I agree that Quebec is not composed only by that, other people, English, Allophone, Native people… They play also a part in our culture, they add their little something and its perfect like this. However, French will always have a special place in our heart and it’s a collective democratic choice that we made.
@NemesiaQc1993 Until 400 years ago the Native Indians had been living there for thousands of years. But French came in, then English came in. All of them are Quebecers/ Canadians now, and that I would say is truly what makes Quebec, the unique Quebec! Frenchness as so important essence of Quebec? I would go to America to see American, and England for "English", Japan for Japanese, AND France for seeing "French".
@skyscraper03 For some places, maybe language is not the main thing, but there is always something that makes a place special, otherwise this place is empty.
