@tprinceballa It should help. I took the ACT one month after the SAT so I didn't have much time to study. All I did was review the scoring rules for the ACT (ACT has different rules for wrong answers), and then I reviewed my SAT math books. I did fine. :)

Honestly, I am a really good student 3.8 GPA, always extremely hard working and always teacher's favorite and always do great in exams and finals, but I got 1510 on my first try... what the hell, they ask you in a way that is almost impossible to understand

@vaironxxrd he subtracted the 3 from both sides of the original equation. so 2x+3=9 so subtract 3 from each side, that cancels out the 3 on the left and subtracts 3 from 9 which gives you 6(9-3=6), get it? If not, tell me, I'll put up a video.

These videos have helped me so much. On practice tests 1-2, I used to only score around 570 on the math. I then found these videos and watched all the problems (even the ones I knew how to do because of the shortcuts he teaches you). So after learning from my dumb mistakes, I took practice test 3 and got a 650, I couldn't believe it! I then took my first SAT and got a 640 math, close to what it told me. I watched him do all the practice test 3 problems and did practice test 4 and got a 690!

To put it more succinctly: Find out where you DIDN'T do well (i.e. perfectly), and work SERIOUSLY on those issue almost EXCLUSIVELY.

IMO, a normally intelligent person, with the right sort of well-considered prep, should definitely be able to score 700+

If you think otherwise then your own psychology is your problem.

I practiced a bit on my own and got 780 on the math (1 wrong--no 790s given on that exam). I did this:

1) Get as many REAL tests as possible to go thru. Can also get GOOD comm. ones (Prnct Revw).

2) Take some, work them, figure out:

a) How can you make your work more EFFICIENT--save time

b) What TYPES of problems are you weak on--THOROUGHLY REVIEW those types

c) What sort of CARELESS ERRORS are you prone to. get aware

d) Also, imagine variations on the types--study them.

i think the hardest part is writing! CR is pretty simple, math is fairly easy also - but writing an essay in 25 min has never been easy for me.

The national average score for the class of 2009 was 1509, or about 500 for each of the three sections. Because the test is scored on a 200-800 point scale, 500 is the center score - 300 points from the bottom and 300 from the top.

The average Math score for MIT students is 800. A score of 1800 will not get you into competitive schools (Ivy League or Cal or Stanford), where the typical middle 50% score is in the 700 range for each section.

I have found that teaching mathematics for the SAT as you teach mathematics in school has numerous shortcomings. Many of the problems should not be solved using school techniques. It is necessary for math teachers to learn, specifically, teach SAT math. Re your first example solution as simple as it is, it should not be solved by first solving for x. Simply double the given equation then subtract enough from both sides to give -3 on the right side. I call it "A make it look like problem".

the SAT is just a review of everything you've learned. its acutally not that bad. like many people, i bought a prep book and did terribly on it, but after few more chapters of working on that book, i began getting better scores, and when the test day came. i got a 1910.

a good tip on taking the SAT is to purchase one of those review books and once u think u got the hang of it, just take the pSAT and see how well u did, after that practice on what parts u need help the most

US competitive colleges are very non-numbers based. They will admit a 730 over an 800 if they think the person shows more drive, initiative or creativity. High scores/grades will get your application considered, but are in no way a guarantee.

I got below an 800 the first and only time I took the SAT.

My friend's husband, Alex, got a 1585.

I work for a company whose CEO got a 1590.

I don't know if I can raise my score, but this entire Khan Math course has made me feel confident that I'm NOT a lost cause.

I'm sure I'll get better than an 800 if I'm allowed to take the test again, as an adult.

I haven't checked with the college yet.

college board. They are real SATs. Princeton Review and Kaplan tend to give hairier problems (but not harder ones) so the ones on the real SAT seem simpler.
