Valor and international perception are not national interests. It's funny that nobody rips on Sweden, Ireland, or Switzerland, for not getting involved in either war, and it actually happened on their continent. Why does the USA owe it to Europe to send soldiers to fight in a war that will not reach it's own border?

They hit a number of private, merchant vessels, which to enter into full-blown war over would have been hasty to say the least. The USA got into WWI when Kaiser made appeals to Mexico to help them regain the Southwest of the USA in exchange for their support. And as if Britain has any business criticizing anybody for "attacking weaker nations". Britain has plenty of blood on it's hands.
