  • A wise man.

  • I just love Bertrand Russell

  • boring. all religion is like a type of social thing and a type of cult, something like a private club, you know like members only get-together, that if you don't follow or believe in what I say or believe in, we're probably not going to enjoy Starbucks together. My opinion is that atheists should preach tolorance, not remined people over and over that all religion is B.S. like penn and teller... by the way they switch positions in bed often.LOL

  • @noledgewise1

"My opinion is that atheists should preach tolorance"

They already do, or are you not paying attention? Atheists usually stand for freedom of religion more than religious people do. Christians groups prove this point when they only stand for their own freedom, and actively try to curb the freedoms of opposing religions. And how can atheists keep quiet when Christians groups fight to destroy or water down science education because it contradicts their beliefs?

  • Well, as I read latest comments, I truly believe that commenting this video would be a huge waste of time.

  • @Adamson11x

Gee, you must be smart then.

  • Russell was such a fucking tool. Sure he wrote some good books and had some good ideas, but he probably had no idea how to change a car tire or satisfy a woman. Reading books is fun, philosophy is fun, but honestly don't waste your time sticking your head up your ass trying to find the all and end of all; you're just wasting your time. The best philosophers? Epicurus, montaigne, and when you're stoned, get some heraclitus goin. Hate your job? read some marx. Shit like Kant and Hegel are waste

  • @ugoodHomeBoy Good point. Mathematics, language, logic ... Who needs any of that crap?

  • @hugogirardisking

Aside from language, I don't need that crap, but that crap sure is useful. Do you need that crap?

  • @ugoodHomeBoy

you, and you cannot be without it even if you tried. its the very nature of your understanding and consciousness of everything

  • @Skelros

    you're a smart man

  • @ugoodHomeBoy

Get your ideas about philosophy off the back of a cafe place-mat, did you?

  • @dudev

Yeah, but you're wrong about the cafe. It was on the back of a Pizza Pizza place-mat. Me, I don't like espressos, that's a drink for smart people.

  • why are you not muslim, mr. russell?

  • @lovellespice Cause islam is a barbaric bullshit religion? just saying =P

  • now i know where yoda's character came from lol

  • There are many ways...you don't need a GPS. You could...acquire AIDS. You could be trown into Guantanamo for No reason. You could be rich and have all your money stolen. Bertrand didn't think human life was important. I do. I care. I love. I want to be treated as I would treat others. I don't want to be a "sheep" with a wolf looking after me. Check out my YouTube Channel. I know that atheism often breeeds a lack of moral's and destroy's compassion, individualism, and freedom.

    God Bless.

  • @ScrewSocialism You mean unlike say... witch trials, crusades and inqusitions. Supression of native cultures, languages and religions. Theft, murder, torture, rapes and slavery. Supression of knowledge, threats towards those that mention alternative views.

Yeah, religions sure breeds moral, compassion, individualism and freedom.

Don´t get me wrong, modern christianity has some nifty ideas. But do not fogret where it comes from, or what it has caused in the past.

  • @ScrewSocialism if you believe everyone should treat others the way they would like to be treated, then doesn't it follow that a masochist would be justified in torturing others because he himself would be in favor of such acts to be bestowed upon himself? I'm not sure where your belief that atheism "often" breeds lack of morals and destroys compassion, individualism, and freedom but it is quite a brazen conclusion and suggests that perhaps you might be slightly ignorant.

  • @ScrewSocialism atheism by definition is a lack of belief in the existence of god. Are you implying that without a belief in god morality, compassion, individualism, and freedom seize to exist? where is your reasoning? suppose god existed and and suppose he created those qualities previously mentioned, does his existence not continue to exist despite whether an individual believes in god or not. furthermore, dont those qualities, previously mentioned, continue to exist?

  • @ScrewSocialism if you argue that those qualities are innate in humans then isn't the existence of said qualities mutually exclusive from a "belief" that god exists? if you argue that those qualities are dependent on the belief in god then are you comfortable with the conclusion that until one believes in god one does not posses morals, compassion, individualism, and freedom? it pretty chauvinistic of you to assume that you hold certain qualities because of a trivial belief.

  • @ScrewSocialism read the bible, learn what reason isnt. if one is unsure of the reasoning behind a belief one should abstain from holding that belief. it does not imply that because one does not understand the reasoning then one should hold that the belief is false but instead that one lacks sufficient mental capabilities.

  • Bertand "Illuminati" Russell is a quack socialist that is most likely in HELL.

  • @ScrewSocialism Oh, in Hell? And where exactly is that?

  • @mihais13 Hell is a place where one is not happy...

Maybe you have been there? I know I have and try to avoid it at all costs.

    God Bless...

  • @ScrewSocialism Idiot, I didn't ask what's happening in hell, I asked where is it? Let's say I want to go there next week for a trip, how should I set my GPS to reach it?

  • Mr. Russell does have a religion. He is a Luciferian/Socialist and wannabe Illuminati.

  • @ScrewSocialism Bertrand Russell was an atheist. Not a "Luciferan", nor a satanist. And Socialism isn't a religious denomination. Come on, educate yourself.

  • @TheBoredProle

if you are defending LORD betrand..you need to educate yourself..this man was eugencist and part of the elite..he is piece of crap....YOu and the rest of us would fit the bill as a "useless eater."...the future will not need to think we will provide all the information needed. to keep them slaves albeit sophisticated slaves for us to rule over..the man was a propagandist for the elite scum..

  • @TheBoredProle An atheist lacks wisdom. Bertrand was smarter than that. He turned to the Darkside. He's like Hillary Clinton. He does not give a crap about human life. He wanted to breed people and treat them like sheep, dumb them down and make the dependent on gov't.- Never to have an original thought or action. Subservience...to an elite...who have the authority and control of individualism. Maybe you like being told what to do by others and do not want to think for yourself?

  • @ScrewSocialism Never have an original thought, Subservice to an elite with contol over individualism and being told by others what to think.

Funny that. *Takes a look on how the christian church worked well into the 1900´s and still do in some offshots*

I recommend having that eye looked at before claiming splinters in others.

  • Mr. B.R, religion does provide a coping mechanism for some.

  • He wasn't saying be atheist, he was saying be agnostic.

  • full of protects from the believers and non-believers lol. Religion and Love are the only issues to debate eternally among mankind.

  • One statement sums it all up: "No, I think it's nonsense." - Bravo!

  • God. I hate hearing religious people's opinions of god.. it's painfully ignorant and shallow... There are other ways to approach "god" ....

  • Ban religion and everybody gets a peace prize.

  • @MrXephyr I am religious. I'm peaceful. Do I not get a peace prize? Logic ftw and don't compare me to other "Christians" because I'm sure that's the only comeback you'll have...

  • @scottrolen27mvp That's pretty agro, assuming I act a certain way because I'm not religious.

  • @MrXephyr actually i was assuming you are peaceful as well...

  • @scottrolen27mvp Don't lie. You assumed I only have one comeback, namely that I will attack you on the basis of religion. Why don't you just leave people alone and enjoy your medieval beliefs in private.

  • @MrXephyr I'm not lying. Lying is a sin my brother ;) well the most often used comeback is something along the lines of "Christians kill/rape/etc. Just look at ___" Since that's the most used comeback on Youtube, I thought to save you the time. If you have a different argument then go right ahead.

  • @scottrolen27mvp Stop annoying me

  • @MrXephyr lol okay brother. Jesus respects people's decisions as do I. Have a good day =]

  • @scottrolen27mvp i think Christians overwhelming lack the ability to reason or chose not to use it. Please dont confuse justification with reasoning. Most Christians would miserably fail a logic exam and most would also fail a religion exam....

  • seems like atheists love when a scientist discard any belief in the afterlife, Russell must be a real fucking rock start to them.

  • @70rm3n70r Russel wasn't a scientist...

  • philosophy is a religion and religion is a cult. i wonder if Russell and Whitehead would agree with me?

now give me my nobel prize, thank you!

  • @BGlimited "...if you believe in it, it is a religion or perhaps 'the only' religion;

    and if you do not care one way or another about it, it is a sect;

but if you fear and hate it, it is a cult."

  • Um... maybe you should get your facts strait. Also quit trolling. It's unbecoming of such a devout and all knowing christian. First, I would like to say that I have never, nor do I ever wish to fornicate with a dead corpse. The thought of doing so disgust me, as it disgust most people. You are making illogical jumps in your arguments as well. You are associating Atheistism with Immorality. They are two very different things.

  • @TurpisHaereticus, would you mind giving me the bibliographiful information for this interview? I'm writing a paper on Religious Beliefs and Conflict, and I believe Mr. Russel's words would be quite handy for quotes. Thank you.

  • @MegaCnlSanders

I'm sorry, all I know is that it was a 1959 interview on CBC (Canadian TV?).

  • @TurpisHaereticus Yes it is a Canadian channel.... located in Montreal actually.

  • @MegaCnlSanders Hi. Its probably too late by now, but his book 'Why I am not a Christian" deals with this subject matter in a much greater detail. You could probably read the first page and find all that he has said in the interview. Hope this helps.

  • Russell would love the "arguments" in this thread. They are exactly what he is talking about when he says he finds none of them to be logically valid. I have yet to see someone try and refute him instead of resorting to "...but the bible says so" or "..clearly God exists, therefore you are WRONG"

  • @EdgarBoffin

In my opinion, his beliefs are very sound - and I agree with many of them. I actually do not regard the bible as the word of a supposed god, but rather a code of living believed to be the word of the aforementioned god that was written by man.. Meaning it cannot be trusted. This goes for all organized religions - and in all honesty in general whether a god exists or not is irrelevent to what is. What can be said however is that the final answer is not empirical and so we will ---

  • @EdgarBoffin

--- never have a way of knowing. Having said this it is my belief that whether or not a god exists, you should always be true to what you feel is morally right, and do your best to never stray. What you would find is a growing concept within yourself, and that the more you learn, the more your beliefs will develop. I believe in a god, and I believe if this god were to preach it would sound a lot like that. May I ask how this opinion is logically invalid?

  • @EdgarBoffin you should do some reading in philosophy of religion brahhhh. You'll be surprised. How many people on youtube to you really expect to have a valid argument for the existence of God? People write hundreds of pages on the proof of God and you're expecting the like on youtube? nah bro. Ain't gonna happen...

  • he speaks posh

  • What a wonderful man.

  • He reminds me of Obama, ya know because they both won Nobel Prize's lol. This guy makes total sense.

  • @wheelmanstan as does Obama LOL

  • GOD spelled backwards is DOG

  • @DrCube i will sleep better tonight,knowing that.

  • @relmmih6 But but but... don't you see??? because GOD spells DOG backward we need to worship the FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTER. SPREAD THE DOOG WORD!

  • @DrCube lol

  • @DrCube your point? LOL

  • a true master of thinking, and living a moral life. i love Bertrand Russell

  • @DidYouJustMakeThatUp Then your my favorite degenerate.

  • @DidYouJustMakeThatUp And your my favorite ass porker.

  • @DidYouJustMakeThatUp How is there no GOD you stupid bastard. Your too stupid to see it. Look at the complexity of life this can only have come about by GOD. He is my GOD but he's your creator. You said: You do know that your God judges you by your actions right? Yes I am aware of this but I respect him you don't and that alone weighs heavy consequences. Bertrand knew one thing about life 2+2=4 and that was it. The aluminum pots got to his brain back then. There's a GOD stupid.

  • My heaven is topless bars. When I have €€€€€€ I am God.

  • @Frank289100

Ahh........your brilliant friend Lenard was a christian who designed military hardware in order to blow the shit out of the commies and godless heathen. How appropriate and how christ-like. Really......

Jesus is such a bad-ass too.........he states in Matt 7:13-14 that only a "few" will be saved. The rest he will make sure are tortured for eternity in hellfire.......of course! Because his finite creatures deserve INFINITE punishment! Billions of souls forever.

    Jesus...my hero.

  • @Frank289100

Lol. Seems I struck a nerve. Your pride, lack of self-control, and foul language all go against New Testament teachings (which also makes you a hypocrite). That's 4 sins in one comment!

Congratulations Frank! You are a shining example of a self-righteous, religious, prick. :)

  • @TurpisHaereticus (Thankfully, I'm in the company of many good and intelligent people who feel the same way). You better get out quick because those jackals are leading you down a bad road. You just may regret it for eternity.

  • Comment removed

  • @Frank289100 Threatening hell to a person who doesn't believe in hell DOESN'T WORK. When will you (and other Christians) finally realize this?

  • @Frank289100 There are also two types of Christians. The first type does believe but doesn't disrespect others for believing there is NO God. The second type of Christian uses ad hominem attacks in an effort to get others to come over to their way of thinking.

Guess which one you are? ;)

  • @Frank289100 And there is also two kinds of religious people. The first type believe in their god but respect those who don't believe or believe in other gods. The second type of religious people is the one that is a fucking idiot that cares more about atheist people's life, proving that it is much more interesting than his religious life. Complexity comes from development, as Darwin has proved to everybody's eyes.

Care about your life man, your misery will be saved by your god...

  • @brunoresende29 I have never realized the direction that man has been taking until I engaged you atheist. You claim the bible is false yet you also refer to a book for truth such as Darwin. The bible was written by many and one set of writing re enforce the others at different time periods. Darwin was one man who stated his opinion which is totally wrong. Bruno I bet you like carnival where everybody fucks each other men with men. Women with women. Family with family like fucking Animals.

  • @Frank289100 Wait... what? Hahahahahaha... Well, I want to show you a video that will finish this discussion in a minute: watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0

    Tell me what you think

  • @brunoresende29 Many things come up when I Google it. What am I looking for wooden mahogany ball made in Brazil.

  • @Frank289100 No, he states scientific fact.

  • @Frank289100 Sorry I did not see an even more pathetic attempt at defending your illusion farther down the page. Yes a large number of aetheists look to darwin's books, among many others, for "truth". The key difference here being that the books we turn to, admittedly come from men who admit that they may be wrong in one form or another. While your book was also written by men, it makes claims that cannot be proven, and claims to be 100% correct, and completely moral.

  • @Frank289100 So the second type of atheist is a lawless animal huh? If you look at the prison population in America, atheists are an extreme minority.

Therefore, your statement falls flat. Most criminals, and most people in general, who commit terrible crimes are religious. Wanna know why? Because atheists value life more than the religious.

  • @VengefulRonin If you had a fucking brain you would be fucking dangerous but you don't. What you are saying is like going to a predominately Muslim country then going to the jails and counting the Atheist in the jails VS the Muslims in the jails.Obviously the country is made up of Muslims and therefore you will find more Muslims then Atheist the same goes forth for Christian countries. Use your fucking brain don't let the Atheists think for you.

  • @Frank289100 Atheists think for themselves.

  • @Frank289100 16.1% are atheist in the population, yet .02% of the prison population is atheist. to understand what vengefullronin was saying you need to look at the percentages, not the total number. Of course for you to understand that, you must have something that you do not possess.... A fucking clue.

  • @VengefulRonin Yeah its about 0.25%

  • @Frank289100 Hmm... out of your two examples of agnostics, I can pull two examples of Christians. The first type does believe but doesn't disrespect others for believing there is not a GOD. The second type of Christian is the one that is a fucking lawless animal that is too fucking stupid to see there is no proff of GOD around him at all. Unfourtunately you seem to fall into the later. I wish there was more room in these boxes for extended discussions. I have more to converse on the topic.

  • @MegaCnlSanders Not only are Atheist lawless animals they are also people who lack ethics and morals. Anything goes like fucking a dead corpses and dropping your load in there. At least you do have to worry about being accused of rape..

  • @TurpisHaereticus Sarcasm FTW ( coming from a believer ) xD

  • @TurpisHaereticus lol you should read some philosophy papers. Have you ever heard of moral luck? look it up brotherrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr in Christttttttttttttttt. You may learn a thing or two ;)

  • @Frank289100

    You're an idiot, biblemaggot.

Prove god exists without bronze-age comicbooks, anecdotal evidence or ignorance about the universe

Guess we'll have to wait forever, eh

  • @Frank289100

Do you expect us to believe there is a GOD because you say there is a GOD?

  • @Sandude Get a microscope then you should jerk off on a slide or should I say masturbate. Which one would make me look respectable. Then observe it and then I want you to logically explain to me how there is no GOD.

  • @Frank289100 So your proof of god is that if you observe your own sperm you'll see it? LMAO that has to be one of the funniest comments I've read in a while! I thank you for the laughs your stupidity has given me. :)

  • @Revenwazhere Are you another Atheist animal that claims there is no GOD. You should jerk off on a microscope then look into it and when you see countless sperm I want you to start to explain to me how there is no GOD or do you believe we came from fucking Gorillas.

  • @Frank289100 "Atheist animal." How Christian of you.

Please show me the connection between sperm cells and the supernatural god.

And yes, I do hold evolution to be true. I would tell you about the fossil record, homology, embryology, atavism, and DNA/heredity but you've already made your decision to demonize the theory, correct?

  • @Revenwazhere Demonize the theory. If you ever run into one you will remember it till your dying day. When I was an Atheist I've seen the powers of the supernatural work. There are books out there on the supernatural you should read one it will open up your eyes. Your mind is young so when you read evolution theories you believe them because you lack wisdom and that comes with age. There is a GOD and a Devil who rules this world. Talk to the older generation they can tell you stories.

  • @Frank289100 There's an old saying: The more you know, the more you realize that you know nothing. Or somewhere along those lines.

I have a feeling you're just trolling at this point. You fail to answer my questions or give any evidence to support your claims that would stand up in a scientific lab.

    God day.

  • @Revenwazhere good*

    Oh the irony.

  • @Revenwazhere yeah you're right. God day ;)

  • @Revenwazhere Don't use the word trolling you sound like the rest of the degenerates monkey see monkey do. Stand up in a scientific lab. How is it there are millions of sperm that swim to fertilize an egg a process so amazing that it can only be by the work of the infinite power who is GOD.. Do you have a bag over your head

  • @Frank289100

I think most of us are glad that Lenard is dead and that you might take some sadness from that fact.

  • Brilliant fellow

  • "..the fundamental dishonesty and the fundamental treachery to intellectual integrity to hold a belief because you think its useful and not because you think its true."

  • @MinaraD so that doesn't apply to a firm believer in religion since a true believer does not believe out of fear or because its useful, but because it is exactly that: true.

  • I love this guy. Articulate is an understatement. Truly a great mind. And to think that a fundamentalist (pick any religion) with half his IQ would call him a fool. It boggles the mind.

  • perhaps isn't strong enough...what religious people are weak...revolting

  • I really need to read more of this brilliant minds works :) (ive live too long unaware of brilliant Brits of the past)

  • @garmans1 I liked the way he was interested in many different areas. Intellectuals these days usually have 1 or 2 areas at most they write on. Russell wrote on mathematics, logic, ethics, science, marriage, politics, civil rights, atheism & more. He was involved in the movement agaisnt nuclear weapons & opposition to the vietnam war. Polymaths of the past like, Aristole, Galton, Da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin if born today would probably devoted their lives to just 1 thing.

  • I enjoyed this interview.

  • Have we changed usage of the word 'whatever'?

He says "none whatever" whereas we would say now "none whatsoever"

Any linguists out there that can shed light on that?

My own theory is that the word 'whatever' is now partial slang, and thus 'whatsoever' is preferred as an unofficial alternative for clarification.

  • @jimjam3579 .....Whereas you obviously didnt even bother to figure out the word of God (with your fleshly mind) so you behave like a little sheep, doing what you're told, thinking what you're told to think and then spouting your childish belief system to anyone who will listen. Nice one Einstein.....

  • Coolest man ever.

  • @jimjam3579 You could have tried listening to him. You probably heard one sentence that you didnt agrred with and then spent the rest of the video writing a ignorant response. Shame.

  • @LetJimiT8keOver You obviously really need to suck one now.Pay attention to your subconscious.

  • @Liverhawk25 No, religion is a freedom of choice. It is your choice, another words, it is your decision how you want to live and where you will go...May God bless you...

  • The gentlemen without the gentle, but truth relies in his acts.

  • I think its sad that such a brilliant man dedicated to truth believed in something that can't be proven. He says if you can't prove it then you must suspend judgment. Well you can't prove God doesn't exist. Yet he still disbelieves. A little contradictory.

  • This is great. Thanks. Russell is a great thinker, though his student Wittgenstein was greater still.

  • It's a shame he was a socialist.

  • @KenMacMillan Nothing inherently wrong with that. Like any system, it's the manner in which it's implemented that's of key determination on its effects upon society.

Oh, just because I find it ironic: Mark Twain was against discrimination of immigrants, was anti-racist, anti-capitalist, enjoyed tax funded educational institutes, championed the poor, and many other things we'd called 'socialist' or 'liberal' nowdays.

Just thought it was humorous, given the other stuff on your channel.

  • How did the Canadians or whoever watched his show at that time react? I bet he probably got a LOT of hate mail (considering it WAS 1959) for those statements, to say the least.

  • Guy's a beast!

  • @Sickofu100 Dawkins saw shades of Russell is what you should say but I get you well written point.

  • What a truly wise man.

  • She is absolutely desperate to have him say something kind or supportive about religion. Everything he says makes sense to anyone with a rational head on his shoulders. Straightforward answers to trite questions.

  • @Brahmsfourth To be fair, she might just be playing devil's advocate. I've seen many interviewers who agree with the interviewee but nonetheless ask questions that go against their own beliefs as a way for the interviewee to better explain their position.

  • Now THIS is a man whose birthday should be a holiday!

  • absolute truths like luminiferous aether?

wrong and yet so many scientific truths came from it, esp. a famed failed experiment that produced so much fact.

useful beliefs such as Issac Newtons belief in gravity that he believed was useful in describing the motions of the planets but was not all that certain it was true, a "Theory".

an irrational taboo morality that comes down from savage ages, unlike the rationalists Karl Marx and Joseph Stalin.

this is why atheism sounds like religion to me.

  • Brilliant! We could use more people like Bertrand Russell in the world.

  • I've quoted Bertrand Russell on a few occasions during religious conversations and I never knew there was actual footage of him speaking on the topic. Great interview with a great man. It's amazing to hear his story parallels the story of young adults over 100 years later. Thank you very much for the upload!

  • His words are like music to my ears. I have so much clarity and joy when I hear this man speak. He will live on in me and my children and this I am sure of. I owe so much to Bertrand Russell. XXXXXX Thanks for sharing honey. XXXXX

  • I don't see why she is saying that altruism and virtue are purely dependant on religious belief

  • Now this was a man among men. No compromise on truth.

  • This is precious. Thanks for posting!

  • An true intellect and a welshman. Cant go wrong really.

  • Thanks! Passing it on!

  • A great thinker. Always a fantastic pleasure to listen to anything he has to say... Thanks for posting, TH!

  • What an awesome thinker.

    5 stars.

  • Thanks for posting this - 5 stars & fav'd!

  • Russell is in my latest quotes video too. He was an anarcho syndcialist.
