I would've asked for his CAC card then if he had one with a chip in it, take him to the nearest military installation to the personnel flight and have them look up his info. If nothing comes up, BOOM! phony ;) .... I'm not a Marine; I'm active duty Air Force and have a cousin that's active duty in the Marines. We're a proud military family and people like this fake turd deserve a good ol' fashioned "military screening".

I served in the USMC and whenever i meet someone that says that they served, i ask them these questions: where did you go boot camp? answer: MCRD Parris Island or MCRD San Diego. when is the USMC birthday? 11/10/1775. what unit or battalion were you with? if you served in the USMC, you will know the answer to these questions and i have tripped up a lot of people of people who SAY they have served but they HAVE NOT!!!!

Since it's legal to lie about military service and make up heroic stories, how about a law treating it like impersonating a police officer. An imposter could be a terrorist, so make it illegal to impersonate a member of the armed forces through wearing uniforms, insignias, medals, ribbons, or the use of forged documents like orders, identification, or award certificates. Only a true phony would be affected as opposed to somebody just wearing a field jacket.

@Rob07601 As long as someone only tells stories, it is not illegal. This man had uniforms, ribbons, and medals that he WORE in conjunction with those lies. There is a law that can punish him with up to 6 - 12 months in jail, and a sizeable fine. At least he isn't purporting to be a Medal of Honor recipient. The penalty would be far worse.

Unfortunately the "Stolen Valor Act" was overturned. The courts have decided there's no difference between giving the intelligent answer to "Honey, do these jeans make my butt look big?" and saying "Now my third Bronze Star, that's kind of a funny story." while wearing full Dress Blues.
