My genes left Ireland 4 generations ago. But I can still know the authentic with the diluted DNA that courses my veins this day (the first day I've heard of Dick Gaughan).
Man, this guy punches you in the gut with his singing. I may be the most freshly minted fan for life, though the ties are more than a century old, I know. I embrace my instincts for old Ireland.
Congratulations! You've just experienced your 1st "Gaughaning"! Been a fan 25 years now, and he can still stop me dead in my tracks with that voice!
Not that it matters mo chara, but Gaughan is equally Irish & Scots, but a gift to us both! In many ways, he represents our Celtic music better than we can articulate, though he is strangely under-appreciated in Ireland, I must admit!
young man put on to dick by his uncle awile ago, its way to early for normals but this brake's me, listen to this along wit a couple of choice others wen im fellin tha blues. think this is the third time in a row , so beautiful can't wait till he's back'n belfast
Cara Dillon does a beautiful version, but this is transcendent. Gaughan's musicianship and his singular vocal ability elevates this interpretation to a masterpiece. You can't kill a good song, any competent artist can reinterpret it, but Gaughan can lift it into the realm of genius.
This IS the definitive version of the song! So emotive in fact, that Dick himself said he couldn't perform it at Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow, when his "Handful of Earth" album was honoured as the Folk Album of the Festival!
But, he did it in the end, as an Encore to us that prayed he would/could!
Cara's is great especially the version with the ulster orchestra, but this is just Dick and his guitar. I think the simplicity gives it it's extra kick as he delivers even more emotion with even less backing.
In my opinion Dolores Keane sang the definitive version of this song along with her husband John Faulkner and Reel Union. I like both Cara and Dicks versions, but check out Dolores Keane singing it and judge yourselfes. Beautiful song none the less.
My Great-great-Grandfather was born to a tenant farmer on the Strokestown estate, County Roscommon in 1841. Somehow he and his family survived the famine, which is a good thing, as I would not be here today otherwise. A great soundtrack and powerful images lukessummer.
Just ecstatic.

Got to see Dick Gaughan when I was little in a pub in Ontario. Lovely. Was raised by a bunch of folky's, best kid-memories ever :)

Cannot remember exactly where I gathered these images, but you will find most - if not all - of them by Googling
'illustrated London news Irish famine' and then click on 'Index to Illustrations'...

I've tried to make it through this song without tears but I lost it when he sang "If you were in your bed lying and thinking about dying".
Other singers are fine, yes, but Dick always cuts me to the heart.

Do we need a definitive version? :)
Dick is just such an under-celebrated national treasure. The mans interpretation of songs is second to none imho.
This is just goose bump inducing. You close your eyes, your there.
