I've never heard a replica - let alone a Gibson historic - that sounds closer to a vintage Les Paul. This is THE tone. You nailed the Kossoff tone with the "stripped" burst (the fiddle probably used on "all right now"). It's dead on. I've played a real burst formerly owned by Rudolf Schenker from The Scorpions and I chase that sound ever since.
I can't understand why you let this guitar go. And btw I'd like to know who the builder of that guitar was. I'm pretty tempted to get me one ;-)
@juanpocopin thanks for the comment...no I did not make it, but a very talented guy did! It is a old wood 59 LP replica, with an old Brazilian board, old Honduras mahogany, old eastern maple top, all the correct glues, nitro finish etc etc. Copied directly from two original bursts the builder had in his possession..all wood was purchased from dave johnson's private stash
@johnbeloe i have a 59 replica made with Dave Johnson's stash to the wood was cut and stored in 1960 i love the brazilian board! it also has all old 1959 hardware. It doesn't have original PAF's but i put ThroBack limited Series PAF's you should look those up their pretty cool!! anyway nice blues.
Johnny, Im observing your great videos for a while now..very nice PG stuff going there :) Could I have more information about your R9? Who made it etc..one of the driest wood I'v heard among reissues..Thank You, Mark
@Desert9999 Thanks... Glad you are enjoying my videos. Actually, this guitar is not a R9, but a handmade 59 replica made with old wood (what I believe gives it such a dry sound). For more information, don't hesitate to send me a personal message... Johnny
BTW, amp doesn't sound thin to me at all. You can really hear the resonance of that mahogany. I have a 'heritage-cherry' Dean Evo SS [LP-copy] with SD Seth Lover pickups, and it has a Honduras mahogany body with a solid maple top as well, which sounds great, sustains better than today's Gibsons, and weighs significantly-less for a guitar of the same basic dimensions. Love that thing. But I also want a custom-replica of a '59 Paul (with Throbak A2 PAF's).
@johnbeloe I agree the guitar is awesome but I'm not sure the Cornell is doing you any favours. You can tell the guitar is awesome, but the amp sounds thin to me. Just my opinion, don't get mad etc... just helping out fellow tone freaks.
@bluescountryfolk thanks - amp's not thin at all - mic tends to sometimes thin things out a bit though. Still, even on youtube, doesn't sound thin to me?!

Great Video. If you want a more vintage accurate string, buy some Gibson L5 Pure nickel strings in 12-56.
