  • I have a 1.5hp Husky air compressor and i think its a 4 or 5 gallon tank. Ive painted cars before in body shops but i want to paint my friends car using this compressor if its possible. It maxes our at 135psi and fills up surprisingly very fast for only a 1.5hp compressor. Using a HPLV gun i usually spray at 40psi in body shops, but i know you can spray at 30psi but it will take longer to paint the car. do you think its possible to paint a car using this type of air compressor?

    thank you

  • Nice..

  • very informative thanks.

  • Well done. Thanks.

  • You dont need a $700.00 dollar compressor. Consider the pressure at which the compressor generates the output printed on the box. Now think about the pressure the gun runs at. compressors can put out more volume at a lower pressure, so it stands to reason that if a compressor puts out 11.5 @ 40, and 10.2 @ 90, then it probably puts out considerably more at the presssure at which the gun will be running, which is around 10-15, right? That's my $.02 anyway.

  • would a smaller 4 gallon compressor with an additional air tank work?

  • @louboffa I've known people who've used smaller tanks and I am by no means an expert. What I was told (and hear from people) with smaller tanks is that if you shoot paint for an extended period of time... you have to stop and wait for the tank to refill or catch up with you. If you want to shoot an entire car without having to stop a lot - I don't a 4 gallon tank would be fun.

  • dear dude.

buy a turbine desgned for hvlp.

    i fucked up 2...

no body shop uses compressors, they use turbine fans which blow air through wider hoses.

    peace

  • Great video I want to see more ...thanks

  • I was at the local home improvement store pricing out what I would need to do this. Dude said that the inside of the black pipe will eventually rust if exposed to water. Do you think this would be worse that the flec's from a galvanized pipe?

  • Are you related to Nolan Ryan?

  • @HQDeezy "no runs, no drips, no errors" : )

  • Thanks for taking the time to post this, Jimmy.

  • Great video man :D

    @wombatau I agree :D

  • i bought a husky pro from home depot, 60 gallon cast iron pump belt driven pump

    11.5 at 40 psi

    10.2 at 90

its quite adequate for the job, it was $440, still not cheap but less expensive then the one you have. i cant complain. i am using a HVLP gun on a 1970 cub cadet 124 that im restoring. im starting on a smaller project, eventually i have a 89 camaro i will paint

  • Thanks Jimmy. Exactly the knowledge I was looking for. This is a serious investment and you did it well.

  • Best intro ever!

  • HOW MUCH DID U PAY FOR THE AIR FILTER

  • Copper is the best way to go. But I work in a industrial setting and all of our air lines are ran with black pipe. The compressors have a dryer and where we have our plug ins around the plant we got dryers and lubers depending on the application. In addition we got water traps all around. It's always good to check and drain periodically to ensure rust doesn't build up. All around nice setup, including hydraulic hose, that stuff will last a very long time.

  • Perry Cox? Is that you?

  • Just out of curiosity did you consider a turbine. I'm not painting cars but I apply a clear coat to fine art prints on canvas with HVLP so I bought an Accuspray turbine for about $900 including a gun. I guess I was too lazy to do all the work that you've shown here. Maybe a turbine won't work with auto paints, I dunnno.

Great vid btw. If you put this much attention into this one aspect of your "crisis" then I can easily imaging the car will be fabulous.

  • Hey Jimmy,

Great video and you are very informative BUT :-))) Your compressor is way larger than necessary. You are right you need the rated SCFM but this compressor has that rating @ 90 PSI! Remember you are powering a HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) gun. You will never put 90 psi to that gun. You could have gotten away with a much smaller compressor.

  • thank u much!

  • great set up. VERY professional and functional.

    but you're not a hobbyist, you're a comedian.

    ;)

  • This is what I did for my setup but I used copper pipes rather then black steel because black steel can rust. Actually some of the black steel pipes that HD were selling had rust on them.

  • That's awesome - it's almost exactly what I did a couple of years ago (including the compressor house). The one difference is I used copper pipe, since black iron pipe can rust. You then get little rust pieces in the air line. The filter should catch that, but it's nice to not have it in the line at all. PVC is bad because the oil makes the PVC brittle and it can explode. You don't want to be present when there's a PVC pipe explosion.

Anyway, great video with great info!

  • love it! Thank you for welcoming me to your midlife crisis. Great video and very informative. I am redoing my bike atm... Check it out and any tips for painting exct would be great. 5 stars man.

  • love it! Thank you for welcoming me to your midlife crisis.

  • hey jimmy you should insulate that compressor house, lol great job...

  • man that was a great video. you have really gone whole hog with that setup. I bet every college kid that knows you is going to come to you for a pint job. LIke the other guy already commented, you should have your own TV show...very entertaining.

  • did you get the black steel @ lowes

  • i sprayed my car using a small compressor and the thing is like 1.5 cubic feet and i got real angry with it cause it kept losing all its pressure in 2 secs and the paint got really bubbly and i only sprayed a small area of the car, now im seeing this video and it clears out my trouble and im going with my neighbors compressor which is new and bigger than mine, it's the size of yours, now this only video actually teached me unlike others and thanks cause ive would have ruined my car

  • I have the same tank! Good stuff. Thanks for the vid. I am about to do my first HVLP gun job on a 1930 model and and then next year a 1948 Ford F5.

  • You rock! Thank you. You should have your own show!

  • Ty for all the valuable information, im setting up a small body shop. FYI for your videos, your a little long winded. Couple times u left me wondering 'where is the chase, and how do i cut to it'. lol. Like i said though lot of good info

  • thank you that was really nice of you to share that information

  • Dude, you're right....no one tells me EXACTLY how to get this all setup.....

You have no idea how much this video just helped me out because I had no idea where to start! Thank you!

  • Would it work if i had an HVLP gun that required 8CFM and a compressor that puts out 8.8CFM at 40PSI)

  • Comment removed

  • some cheaper HVLP guns are 7-9 CFM.

i just bought a coleman powermate thats 8.7 CFM @ 40 PSI, and im gunna match the HVLP gun to that (TCP cheapo 3 gun kit @ 80$) @ 7 CFM.

you have a beautiful setup though. question: what brand of paint are you spraying? im thinkin of either gettin some Sherwin Williams, or even cheaper ebay stuff -- will be spraying my 03 mustang - in black...

  • Good Video. I've been researching auto paint myself. One auto body paint book I'm reading said to get a LVLP paint gun so to avoid buying a huge air compressor for a lot of money. It's harder to find them today but, you can find them on the internet.

  • Thought this was going to be boring, no, freaking awesome. Youdahman.

  • lol ur funny man. nice video man

  • Just wanted to thank you for this video. I hadn't thought about the moister. I'm getting ready to do some painting so this really helped.

  • Really enjoyed yoru approach...your funny thanks for the post

  • Awesome shirt!

  • Great video..so much helpful info..great. Thanks.

  • showtime 90 HVLP paint spray system by TP tools turbine power unit NO air compressor required!! 20-oz gravity-fed gun and 1-Qt primer gun, 33 Ft flex hose w/valve 50% paint savings Made is USA !!

  • @bongripbaker

    What is this?

  • Is the car finished yet? How about an update?

  • really good video, thank you for posting

    uk

  • Hey that is some good info, but before you spray be sure you are not getting any oil in your air supply, like i was even a new compressor will have a little oil carry over I don't know why the best thing is the filter you have plus a coalesting filter good luck !

  • Thank you men !!! i did not know and i did not have any idea of what kind of compressor to use with the gun, but you open my eye's now at least i have a good HVLP gun, good video.

  • yea i have some really cool ideas for it, i want to paint is black with a mirror finish with white interior with black stiching. i also want to put chrome sidepipes on both sides of the car. i also have 3 of each part(thank god for junkyards) so im going to make some more unique parts. i also have 3 engines so im goin to make one original one to just have and one to "over haul"

  • i have a 1972 bmw 2002 that i will currently be painting, i am 16 and this is going to be my second car

  • 72 2002 nice. My first car when I was 17 was 1970 2002 (back in 1980). I babied that car, owned it for 7 years thru college wound up painting twice. Still remember the VIN 1669139 Kudos lad. Keep me posted.

  • that Coleman 27 gal w/8.2 cfm @ 40 psi would prolly work (your compressor might have to "catch up" - let the tank refill). A friend told me he is using rubber hose coiled in a large basin filled with ice water which allows the warm moist air to cool before it reaches your gun. You would want a evaporator/water filter. Worth a try. the worst thing that would happen is you shoot "orange peely" paint. Start with a 2 stage primer to experiment. Try base & clear on test panel. Have fun.

  • I have a Coleman 27 gallon air compressor rated at

    5.6 cfm @ 90 psi

    8.2 cfm @ 40 psi

Would that be sufficent enough for HVLP spraying...I have a Ram Tools Hvlp gun but im not sure what it is rated.

  • Please, make more videos about your body and paint projects. You're a natural-born teacher.

    Driftinso

  • Thanx for the Video & help installing my compressor

I cant use 50ft of pipe so I have 5 filters,1) compair pre filter watertrap, 2) Domnick Hunter 0.1 microm coalescent, 3) Donaldson Ultrafilter 0.01 coalescent, 4) ATD desiccant dryer, 5) Wilkerson 0.001 micron Activated carbon filter. I get very clean & dry air.

  • im no expert but,the bigger industrial systems ive seen use a heat exchanger with a drain off to control heat/moisture. you should def. have local isolation at your comp. wont you get rust/corrosion deposits with mild steel? surely use galv. then thru filter bott;e via polypipe togun?

  • Black steel pipe does have a galvanised coating on the inside & wont rust

  • iv done a couple projects and i airbrush alot...latest project is my motorcycle with flake base, tri color color schemes, and a airbrush mural...and iv done tons of research...and let me tell you guys, you dont need any of this fancy setup unless your starting a business...if you do airbrushing alot and only a few bigger projects here and there...all you need is a common air compressor and just watch the psi instead of the scfm...to solve the moisture problem just add a moisture control atchment

  • hi wonder if you can help me, basically im trying to spray bumper strips on my car the same colour as the car and wonder what kit i would need ? if you could point me in the right direction of a compressor and gun. thanks

  • hey man...um...let me ask first if your doing this as a one time job or your thinking about doing more projects on the side

  • well im looking to buy stuff to do a one time job but if im buying stuff ill probs use it again for little jobs here and there. thanks

  • Well, after setting the place up, I decided to declare myself a "small buisness" (write off these expenses) - have 2 more BMW 2002s and one Triumph TR6 in the que...

  • SCFM IS just as important as PSI, You can have a 1000psi compressor but if it pumps out 5cfm & you have a 10cfm gun it WONT work, trust me I know from experience. You just get splatter from the gun.

A moisture filter or watertrap only removes water that has already seperated from the air, to remove water that has not seperated you need a coalescent filter or desiccant dryer but its better to have all 3 filters

  • sorry to tell you this but you could have rented a Gasoline driven compressor for a weekend to paint your car.

Even if you had to prime it one weekend sand it then paint it the next ..... >:o( heh

Well now you have the compressor and can do more projects.

  • Great air compressor you got.

  • God bless you man, you just took a lot of the confusion out of my head. A GREAT video. Just wish you hadn't cut off the last bit about sharps filter. But will look for that online.

    With greetings from Iran

  • Thanx for the help, I have ran out of money for more pipe now as its £44 for a 4 meter length. I think with the filters and desiccant dryer I should be OK with 8ft. It is never hot here in the UK, usually very cold so its cold air that is going into compressor, my compressor outlet is 3/4" I will use a high flow pcl coupling and a 1" coupling on the pipe with a 1" or 3/8" hose fitted with hosetail pcl couplings & worm ring to hold them. what do you think?

    Mark

  • Hi Jimmy. I am installing a compressor & using 1" black steel pipe. I have stainless steel elbows tees & ratchet threader, but dont know what fitting to use at the end of the pipe where the couplink attaches to the hose. What kind of ball valve did you use on the drain leg & what is the hose thickness from compressor to pipe?

I cant use 20ft, I have 8ft at the most but have a prefilter, watertrap, coalescent filter then desiccant dryer. will this stop any dirt & moisture getting into my gun?

  • I used 1 inch black steel, and then used a junction elbow to drop it down from 1" to 1/2"(or 3/4 can't remember) at the filter. I think the sizes are the same coming out of the compressors and/or filters (pretty sure its 1/2). I ran a 1/2 hydraulic type flex hose coming out of the compressor. With 8' piping limit, you can double back once with elbows to give yourself 16'. "Pros" recommend 20' for cooling. Get as much length as you can - you want the air cooler dropping moisture before gun.

  • thank you, you made it easier for me to understand too. Im in the same boat right now

  • thanx alot man you just made my life easier...jajaj thanx..

  • Thank you very much for the upload. Did you come across any advice with regard to leaving pressure in the compressor tank when you were done spraying?

  • this is how all "how to videos" should be explained.

  • Good job, but about the air compressor CFM rating, you should look at the lower pressure when dealing with a spray gun, because a spray gun usually operates between 10 and 20 CFM, so use the 40 psi rating when you look for a compatable spray gun. I run my Kobalt spray gun off of my 33 gallon Craftsman. It works just fine. It did kick in alot, but there was also some quiet time. Mine puts out 6.3 CFM at 40 psi. All i need is a water filter to keep out moisture. Good job on the video.

  • nicely done and thanks for info

  • thanks

  • this guy should be on tv - entertaining just to hear you talk man

  • i hate hearing an aircompressor run it makes me wanna go beat myself in the head with a hammer

  • start beating lol

  • i hate hearing an aircompressor run it makes me wanna go beat myself in the head with a hammer

  • "welcome into my midlife crisis" xD

  • Way to go Jimmy, old boy! You are right, I was looking for some video to go over the air compressor setup! Well done!

  • excelente video!! muy informativo !!! very good!! great research!! thank you.

bueno gente, ya entendí que para usar varias herramientas de aire, minimo un compressor de 10.0 scfm o mas jejej!!

  • Very informative. Thanks!
