@bruceagogox Yes, this was on January 9, 2005 (Supposed to be Idina's last, but there was that fiasco the day before during the matinee, so that's why Shoshana's on) And Shoshana was set to replace Idina the following Tuesday.
You all are so boring lol. No matter how many years pass, I can count on you all crying over this one is better than that one. I'm sorry, what the hell is your point? Okay, fine, Eden is better than Shoshana. I hope you have fun watching EDEN's videos from now on, instead of coming into Shoshana's videos. Amazing voice! <33
I like Idina mendel and eden espinosa Idina cuz she was the first and she did great i like her best but eden on the fiyero riff was amazing bit and peace from eden's was good she made it her owns. now this other just tend to try to be idina and it's like make that song you own it
@LucasForeman Uhm.. sorry? but Idina was the original. Stephanie was her understudy, and the original Elphie for the 1st national tour. In every single thing about wicked that I've seen (the program, Wicked documentary) Idina is noted as the 'original Elphaba.' The documentary is my main source. The documentary shows interviews with Schwartz, Idina, Kristin, and SJB. Kristin is named under "Galinda," Idina is named under "Elphaba," and SJB is named under "Elphaba understudy."
for those that haters of idina eden and shoshana. dont hate on them because they can sing. the three each have there own song in WICKED. i personally think eden owns this song. shoshana owns DG. and idina is the original elphaba so she is great at all of them. so dont hate on anyone. they just are individuals
@GoApples "Stage singers look up when they're singing (especially on broadway and west end) to see little tv screens above the audience on the front of the dress circle to see the music instructor under the stage to sing in time with the music."
She is good... Eden is Elphaba though!... You know I wouldnt mind seeing Nicole from the Pussycat Dolls take a crack that this since she knocked my socks off as Maureen
@asswhole239 Idina was a constant belter and had asthma other Elphabas used a mixed voice like Shoshana even though it doesn't sound tht way sometimes
Wow I can't beloved u peouple are fighting of opions! Serously you guyes are tuning a great song! Who cares who sang it the best! Why can't we just be greatful that we have the oprtunity to watch this amasing story? (sorry bad speller)
to get back on the subject of SHOSHANA, this was pretty good. she actually acts like she's becoming Wicked. the cape flourish at the beginning was clever, and her ending was absolutely amazing. she's not one of my absolute favorites, but Sho is really good. she seems to me like one of the originators of many riffs we now hear in this role
Why does everyone have to complain about everything that the actresses do they work hard and do a good job so if you don't like what shoshanna or idina or eden does just simply dont watch the videos or don't leave negative comments ... if you dont have anything nice to say don't say anything at all :\ personally i think shoshanna is great :D
She contorts her face really weird when he has to belt. IE when she's doing the whole "Nessa, Dr. Dillamond...ect" On the Second Fiyero, she looks almost happy?
@GoApples Well, i am a stage performer myself and i can tell you a fact or reason why she might look a bit happy. If you know about being nervous when you sing on your own in front of people, there are different types of nerves. By this i mean some people freeze up and cant move or speak, some people vomit, and other people (this might be her case.) Laugh or smile, simply because people are looking at her and she's looking back.
@deliciousgurlbabe I'm not trying to be a bitch or anything, but I'm really just commenting about her vocal technique. Every time she goes for any of those higher notes, she makes that face. And you can tell from her tone that those notes aren't....ready? I'm not sure how to describe it. I'm not saying I'm as good or that I can even compare cause I'm a guy, but I don't think that a deficiency in her vocal technique should hinder her acting ability on stage. It just kinda looks out of character.
@GoApples People originally think when stage performers who sing look up to the roof it's to distract themselves from seeing people looking at them, this is false. Stage singers look up when they're singing (especially on broadway and west end) to see little tv screens above the audience on the front of the dress circle to see the music instructor under the stage to sing in time with the music. Hope this helped! xo
ummm....she looks up because that's where the audience are! Yes there are monitors on the dress, good performers perform to the 'whole' house, not just the 'a' reserved seating.
If an d-grade reality celeb was in this role,or hearing melanie griffith playing 'roxy', i'd be the first to knock'em down, but all these women that have been mentioned here, are all legit musical theatre performers. they have earnt their place through sheer talent. Compare their performances, but don't bring up useless rebutals because 'she contorts her face' or 'she didn't move her arm as often as the other one' !?!
@imAoKay87 That's cause she went for the F in her range. And there's a difference between hitting a note, and singing a note. F's aren't an easy note for some women to hit. It's a hard note. I just think that she needs to have it more under control before she does something that could potentially hurt her voice.
@GoApples the "fiyerooo" is a C# and it's also the way the song is written. She doesn't go for the F in this, that's what Eden does sometimes, tho. Sho just held it longer/better than Idina can. Neither of the two have perfect vocal technique but we need to understand that if everyone had perfect technique then they would all sound the same. Both Sho and Idina's voices are very unique and your amateur analysis of their voices isn't gonna change how they choose to sing. Keep complainin if u want
@asswhole239 I don't know that her voice is permanently damaged because after her London run she took a break and went on tour. And her voice sounded amazing on her tour, although she obviously sang songs that best suited her voice.
@JamesChristian10036 well, that's a matter of opinion. you could have said she was doing it bad in your opinion, but it wasn't "wrong." And, i personally like how she does it. actually, i've heard a lot of people saying that's one of the things they like about her No Good Deed/Wicked Witch of the East, etc...
wow 6 months later and i find this arguement man thats intense! i was just thinking as i was watching all the no good deeds...you know all these women interpret this role so differently and they all have such different vocal stylings. its so great that there are so many elphabas to cater to everyones preference and we should appreciate all that are willing to get up on stage purely for our entertainment. i am in love and in awe of this role and any musical theatre actress who gets to play her
I totally agree! We all have different preferences and they all sing it just a little bit different. Just appreciate all the others and support your favorite, but don't specifically dis the others cause they're all obviously good enough to be performing in the first place
Idina Menzel is such a sack of crap. Shoshana should have been the first Elphaba. This is how the role is supposed to be sung...if for no other reason than I don't fear Shoshana's vocal chord is going to violently fly out of her throat.
Idina Menzel is a sack of crap?! Do honestly in your right mind that if she had no talent that she would have accomplished what she has? I know her voice wore out b/c of this show, but that doesn't mean she's a sack of crap. And if she's not your preference, you're entitled to your opinion. She's not always mine either, but I still have a lot of respect for her.
Everyone has their own opinion, and we should all respect it. Maybe if you would even look up some of these Elphaba's, you all would appreciate some of them. Stop bashing each other and appreciate the musical for what it is.
I've said it once, I'll say it again: Shoshana is without a doubt my favorite Elphaba to grace the stage so far. Her voice is immensely powerful and her embellishments on the original melody are beautiful without going over the top as some Elphies (*cough* Eden *cough*) tend to do. Everyone has their opinion, and I respect it, but Shoshana is it for me.
Heh - well I think I made it clear in my comment that I was merely stating my *opinion* and that I respected the opinions of others, but you, as an immature troll, clearly refuse to extend me the same courtesy. I respect Idina for originating the role, but as someone who saw her live twice during her run, I found her delivery of nearly all the high register, excited parts of the song to be screechy and unpleasant. She more shouts than sings the concluding notes of 'Defying Gravity'.
Right - I'm sorry, I should have realized I was dealing with a serious wicked fangirl - a.k.a 12 year old airhead with absolutely no Broadway appreciation experiences outside of Wicked (and maybe Rent, if you're old enough). I'll wait until you grow up and realize how ignorant you are.
@defygravitybewicked Sorry, gotta give you a minus one, just cuz Idina Menzel is so not good at all. But I have to say, I was very amused by "grumpy old troll". I like that. Effective, but not overly terrible.
Even if Idina shouts the end of Defying Gravity it sounds as good as Sho if not better. I am a fan of riffs and stuff (I wish Idina would have done more), but Sho is one of the only actresses to go over the top with it in Defying Gravity. She does far too much. I do like what she does in No Good Deed though.
Sho has such an interesting look: her face in this vid is plain and yet at the same time its so beautiful. Heh, whenever I watch vids of her earlier performances, she makes me think of a kindly kindergarten teacher, which is kinda funny b/c Margret Hamilton was a school teacher before becoming an actress. ;) XD
Beecause I know that while she is great, she has flaws, just like I do with Julia, Idina, SJB, and all my other fave Elphaba's. Like I said, I'm not some creepy fan who thinks she is the best thing to happen to WICKED like many of her fans are.
Correction. Idina can act the shit out of it, and is a good singer but lacks the formal depth of technical singing training that someone like Shoshana has, so it's harder for her to be consistent. Shoshana is somewhat over the top in acting but people it's theater, most of the audience is too far back to see the face, so you have to be big. She's not too loud, it's called belting, a true powerhouse of the theater. Next time you decide on being an ignoramus, at least be an informed one.
Idina is Elphaba. That's the way people will kill to see Idina Menzel once again on Broadway. And if Idina cannot act, how she won a TONY? How she originated the role of Maureen and Elphaba? And did an amazing job as Amneris! Your opinion is pointless. Idina is Elphaba!
bookworm...you are the only person I have come across that really seems like a complete idiot. Yea, fine Idina is not your fave, but yet you list Eden as one of your faves? I'm sorry, I like Eden, but you want to talk about "spastic, crazy and too loud"? Eden riffs in the most idiotic places and goes overboard with trying to sou nd like a popstar and everytime I've seen her LIVE (which unlike you, who has most likely only seen her live and no one else except on vids) she went flat in every song
u are the very first person i have ever come across who even thinks that, i'm not attacking you it's just in my experience u like one or the other and "neither sounds anything like eachother at all and if u say that then ur deaf" -Screaming fan girl it's kinda crazy, i mean imo they don't sound alike at all but hey if u hear it u hear it lol
I just meant that the have a similar vioce colour for example, you could put shoshana bean and idina in a pack and kerry and eden in another, in terms of type of belt, by saying type of voice I meant type of belt, eden's and stephanie j block is a most warmer belt than sho's and idina, just that, and i am not deaf :)
@jcwelover Maybe just a little bit -- but that's more of because vocal range and style required to pull the part off than it is because of the actual voice. Beyond that I bet if you heard them singing casually rather than for this particular part you'd definitely be able to tell them apart.
God, yes Idina was the original but Ms. Asthma wasn't the best. No far from it!

u are the very first person i have ever come across who even thinks that, i'm not attacking you it's just in my experience u like one or the other and "neither sounds anything like eachother at all and if u say that then ur deaf" -Screaming fan girl it's kinda crazy, i mean imo they don't sound alike at all but hey if u hear it u hear it lol

I just meant that the have a similar vioce colour for example, you could put shoshana bean and idina in a pack and kerry and eden in another, in terms of type of belt, by saying type of voice I meant type of belt, eden's and stephanie j block is a most warmer belt than sho's and idina, just that, and i am not deaf :)

shoshana and eden are similar they both have nasal belts and unusually large ranges

@jcwelover Maybe just a little bit -- but that's more of because vocal range and style required to pull the part off than it is because of the actual voice. Beyond that I bet if you heard them singing casually rather than for this particular part you'd definitely be able to tell them apart.
