is there an established way for determining what length the spear you use should be or is it basically a comfort thing?

Generally a foot or 2 longer than you are tall. Unless you are in a formation, then you wanna get something a bit longer.

They are regular 1600N sports fencing masks with sabre master padding. And extra padding for the back of the head.
