  • Thank you! You need some flux.

  • wtf does dis do can some1 tell me

  • @JAViiER301 its a Fan control bay

  • Awesome two videos; inspired me to do this myself. My only question is if you have seen the original Rheobus internals and if it is possible to add the 'sockets' like it had to the extreme? That way, if I feel like switching back to blue - or to something else it will just be un-plug old, plug in new, and done.

My googlefu and lack of knowing the proper name of those sockets has failed me.

  • @stive5115 Yes I am familiar with the pop in ones, however those will not work on this particular fan controller.

  • @WestCoastMods Thanks for letting me know. Do you happen to know what they are called exactly? (The sockets) I'd like to know for future projects. =)

  • @stive5115 Sorry bro, I forget myself. You can Google it though or check some of the other fan controllers specs.

  • No wonder you need to add solder to de-solder. Your soldering iron has such a wide tip!

  • @white8ass8kika Proper tip for the application......a smaller tip will not heat up enough surface area to remove the old solder. And turning up the heat can cause damage to the board

  • I was thinkin bout getting this specific controller. I'm gonna have several large fans and 1 48W 4.8Amp delta fan so I know I can't put that one on this controller without frying it.

Do you know of any schematics I can use just for my 4.8Amp delta?

  • @djkub1 Sorry bro, I do not.

  • are these 3mm leds or 5mm?

  • @DragonforceX351 They are 3mm LED's

  • i cant stand the nzxt fan controller. its so difficult to get a good view and see everything.

  • @GT5Enthusiast Bad/cheap LCD screen.....I think they improved it on their new model.

  • @WestCoastMods i haven't checked, i picked one up new about 4 months ago and it was just terrible. but for $50 i guess i can really complain. if i was going to get a real screen, i would get the ASUS OC station.

  • @GT5Enthusiast Well they both display different things......and IMO the Asus OC station isn't worth the money and I think they may have discontinued it.

  • @WestCoastMods you can make the OC station display everything the NZXT does. in fact i am sure you can make the OC station display that ever you want.

  • @GT5Enthusiast Cool, I didn't know that.

    Thanks

  • can you post a link to the place that you got the leds on please. I don't wanna get ready to do this and oh wait, there the wrong leds and the whole controller goes somehow blows up on me.

Also, thanks for the soldering tips. I was soldering correctly before, but now it should take me like a third of the time to solder something.

  • @skulspike92 I used Linrose brand.. bought them at Fry's Electronics...but any LED should work. Read the spec's for the LEDs on the controller and try to find ones that are similar. You're looking for how many volts the original LEDs require...and if you find replacements that are close, you won't have to change the resistors.

  • @WestCoastMods

ty for that info. I will probably buy this fan controller and mod it when I get out of school so start of december

good video and really really nice angles and instructions

  • @skulspike92 Thanks bro...hope it helps you when you mod yours.

  • LazyMan, I did this Mod thanks to your videos and just want to share what worked for me in removing the acrylic knobs. Took a pair of plyers and taped the teeth with painters blue masking tape (two layers) and also taped a small two inch flat head screwdriver and fished the screwdriver down to hold the square black potentiometer while I grabbed the knob with the plyers and gently pulled the knob out. This protected both the knob and the potentiometer from breaking away from the board.

  • @2stent Great idea, I will try this next time.

  • Nice informative video, thanks for making it.

  • @mofo1000 No problem, thanks for the comment. You should sub my channel as I have many more how-to's coming

  • nice soldering tips dude, i lernt a few things thanks :)

  • @2007jhi No problem, glad you found some useful info

  • @MrE1981 Is that all you can come up with, sorry my pronunciation is not up to your standards...I would suggest you just not watching my vids if they bother you that much...

  • hey. i bought this product today. but i have a minor problem..

when i turn it to minimum, neither my fan or the leds are shutting down . got any advices?

  • @babydash123 Yeah, I don't know what it could be...is it the same on all channels. it may be defected. also make sure your using a fan that has 3 wires, no just two.

Let me know if you figure it out

    LazyMan

  • @WestCoastMods red the user manual, and it is from 2v-12v +- 10% or something, seems like its another version than yours.. and I use 3 wires on 3 channels and 4 pin on one of them .

  • @babydash123 Just wondering, have you modded it yet, and if so did it work before you modded it?

  • @WestCoastMods I have NOT modded it yet.

  • @babydash123 Then I would see if you can return it

  • heya !

1st . you made me buy this product

2nd . you made me mod this product : )

and I got a question for you. can you touch the green plate when soldering , or will it melt ?

  • @babydash123 If you're talking about the PCB board then no it will not melt.

    Good Luck

    LazyMan

  • @WestCoastMods thanks.

  • sawder lulz, its solder. I know its just your accent ;) thanks for the video.

  • @jackdaknife Thanks for correcting me...but it's not my accent as i have no accent....it's because I have a tendency to gurgle my words when filming...lol

    It's my nerve's not my accent :-)

  • @WestCoastMods lol don't worry about it, i dont have the nerves to be in a video. Keep it up!

  • My eyes. Lol

  • Do you still have that NZXT fan controller?

  • @ClayCGP Yes, plan on using it in my wife's PC

  • @WestCoastMods dang was gonna tell you to sell it to me xD but nvm then :P

  • Great Video! Great Tips! Alot Of Info!

I've never Soldered myself but gives me Alot of confidence to change out LEDS also!

Eventually I Will Learn, This Video Does Teach Alot Though!!!

  • @90acurals great, hope this vid helps

  • So what did you do with the other controller. I have been watching a bunch of your video's and you don't use a quarter of what you buy. What do you do with all of the extra stuff you have laying around. I never have money for the parts I need.

  • @chipsgood Yeah, I have a bunch of stuff that I buy and don't use immediately. Eventually they will come in handy, so I just keep them other than selling them off. With 4 PC's and 2 laptops in the house, I always need backup components.

  • @WestCoastMods i'm jealous!

  • very usefull vid...

i'm not modding myself yet but i really enjoy watching you...

you could be a teacher :p

  • @dudemvp Thanks, I appreciate all your support

  • Love your vids.. Not only you do cool and helpfull stuff but you are one of the few people doing it with a really high quality camera.. Thumbs up!

  • @TheUltimateAddict Thanks, now there in 1080P....yeah baby!

  • 6:50 did you burn the board a little?

  • @acer0169 Yeah, it got a little discolored. However no big deal, all I did was use a small stainless steel wire brush to clean it up. They sell them just for that purpose.

  • Lazyman-your vids are great! Helped me start modding! One question on rheobus led mod. I cant seem to pry the knobs off. Chipped the first knob in 2 places with screwdriver. Is there a trick to prying them off. By the way my controller is an early edition because it dose not have the insulation foam on the bottom of the circuit board. Thanks

  • @2stent

Yeah, they are on pretty good, but I would not suggest using a screwdriver to get them off as you have mentioned. The reason being, by using a screw drive you are not applying equal pressure around the whole knob.

When manufactured they pressed them on, so to remove them I would suggest just using your fingers and by applying equal pressure around the whole knob and pulling straight out. It will be tough but after some effort they should come off.

    Hope this helps

    LazyMan :-)

  • @WestCoastModz Was too late to follow your advice but was able to complete the mod and actually contacted Sunbeam in Taiwan and got them to ship me 3 knobs to replace the knobs I damaged. Cost $4 including shipping! They were very helpful!

Surprised me! The mod looks sweet with my Red and Black CM932 case. I had never soldered before nor worked with LED's and now I've done this, fan led mods, sleeving-all with what I have learned from your vids! Thanks again!

  • @2stent That sounds great, you should post a vid.

    Cheers

    LazyMan

  • this video helped me to finally understand how to properly de-solder

I also have a rheobus, but it's the normal edition and the LEDs are connected by pins, so they can be easily removed

  • @TheCheesyProductions Glad you found this video helpful.

Yeah, fan controllers with socket type LED's sure does make it a lot easier to change them out.

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • can you heat up both pins for the led at the same time so when the left over solder is melted you just pull?

  • Yes you can, it's funny that you said that, after filming this, I realized the iron tip was wide enough that it could heat both pins at the same time and it made it much easier to remove the LED. lol

    Thanks

    LazyMan :-)

  • is there any flux on your steel wool?

  • No there is no flux in the steel wool, any coarse steel wool will work. actually much better than a wet sponge as water rusts/oxidizes metal. Oxidized metal doesn't transfer heat well.

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • What type of LED's did you use? Which LEDs could i use if i want lower intensity light? And is there a way to ad an on off switch for all leds?

  • I personally use Linrose brand, you will need to Google it. IMO they are of the highest quality, but they are also expensive. They don't sell direct, so you will have to find a vendor. also you can look at

    SuperBrightled's (dot) com

I will send you a PM for a LED controller

    LazyMan :-)

  • @WestCoastMods

Great site for leds (no w's) c-leds (dot) com

  • Thanks bro will check them out.

  • Comment removed

  • Yes $25, and you pay for the fan controller, LED's and shipping. PM me if you're interested.

  • Use to build these things from scratch in school.

  • Cheers, I'm just started to get into electronics. I've done electric installation for years. This is really helping me to understand how all of this works!:)

  • Thanks

  • you put a lot of work into these builds, damn !

  • Yes sir! Thank You. I build every build as if it was mine.

  • Love the controller, but I HATE how bright the LEDs are at full power. Do you think it would be possible to solder resistors inline with the LED? I'm not sure if the LED itself would fit back into the holder once the resistor is soldered on. I dont know how else to lower the intensity of the LEDs? Any thoughts?

  • Absolutely, you could solder a resistor anywhere between the source and the LED. also you could wire them so only 5v is powering them instead of 12v.

There are already resistors solder in on the board, you could also de-solder them and install higher ohm resistors. but you would have to experiment, because if the LED doesn't receive enough power they will not light at all.

    Good Luck

    LazyMan :-)

  • Thanks for the reply LazyMan! After some thought instead of using resistors I was thinking about just replacing the LEDs with lower mcd rated ones. Do you have a ball park estimate of the rating for the stock LEDs? Lowest 3-3.5v 3mm blue LED I have found was 1200.

  • Actually no sure, maybe it's the literature that came with the controller, I never really read that stuff. lol

Anyway your idea is a good solution, check out

unique led (dot) com I think they have some as low as 400mcd or lower.

    Good luck

    LazyMan :-)

  • why not use coppe to remove???

  • What is coppe?

  • I freaked a little bit when you first started turning all those knobs like a speed ninja. I'm considering the Sentry for myself. Did you ever get around to using it?

  • No, I still have the Sentry, will be installing it in another PC I have. I really like the Sentry, but it just didn't seem to go with my theme.

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • great vids. I was wondering how that controller would connect to power

  • via a molex connector

  • I got the same controller its 4/5 great vids keep it coming!

  • Thanks Rick,

Sorry it took so long to reply.

  • does bending the led's make it any better than just adding them the same way as when fan controller was at stock?

  • The stock LED's were bent also, pointing towards the knob.

  • Nice, very useful tutorial 5/5.

  • A++

  • oh, thats why my solder doesn't stick to anything...LOL! (the tip is covered with burnt crap)

  • Keeping the tip clean and tinned is very important. If your tip is so bad, I would just buy a replacement tip for a few bucks. (if yours has changeable tips) most do, unless they are the very, very cheap ones.

    Cheers

    LazyMan

  • mine falls into that latter catagory, so its no big loss. Thanks for your help!

  • heh you should see the soldering irons that were at my high school...those tips get so nasty so fast with all the students using them.

  • LOL!!

  • Great work!

    Idon't know but I can't leave a comment on the part 2?

  • But Why??

  • Wow I think I need one of them fan controllers for my Antec. Awesome,.

  • That sound good, I can't tell you how it performs yet, but the reviews have been very favorable.

Also With those big heat sink, It should run real cool.

  • Lol the guy who cannot stand blue leds anymore :) !!

    another gr8 vid lazyman !

cheeers for posting ! thats gonna be my fan controller as well in few dayz.

  • Thanks Bro!

  • Thanks

  • awesome job dude!

  • Thanks

  • Great vid WCM!

The Rheobus 4 knob one works great for me. :)

  • Thanks bro, then 4fan controller is nice too, and much easier to change the LED's. No soldering required, thet are socket type, just pull them out and put in the new ones.

  • mm nice :)

The 6 knob one is all Blue LED?

For the 4 knob one, on low, it is Red and on max, it's Blue.. That's probably my reason for choosing the 4 knob one and because I don't have much fans to adjust the speed.

What kind of case fans do you have?

I switched from these Scythe S-Flex's and these other Scythe to these Xigmatek ones with the white LED.

  • My fans are all Xigmatek too, I love them!

  • Which ones do you have? :)

  • I have 7 XIGMATEK XLF-F1453 140mm 4 white LED, but i probably will only use 4 and a Xigmatek 120mm w/ white LED

  • Awesome! Great Tutorial

  • Thanks

  • awesome. i was never that good with soldering. but never realy had to cause im using a blue theema and its not that hard to find blue matching stuff lol.

  • Thanks Bro, yeah blue is readily available.

  • Great DIY...

    5/5

  • Thanks

  • Whoa.. The LEDS on the Extreme are so much more difficult to replace than the Regular..

The regular just has LEDS sitting in there.. no solder.

I gotta stop being so lazy and change mine out :D

    5/5

  • Yeah, the 4 fan controller uses socket type. mucho easier!

post a video response if you do change yours LazyManJR.

  • This is a great tutorial to soldering/ changing your LED Color!

  • Thanks m8t

  • Again great tutorial. 5/5

    Good info on soldering.

  • Thanks my friend

    Cheers

    LazyMan

  • I really enjoy your vids Lazy....

even if i know how to do something, It's good to get information from other sources, and your vids would have to be the most informative I have ever seen.

    Off to Pert 2......

  • Thanks for the kind words, I agree with you, I learn something everyday even if I think I already know.

There's a wealth of info out there just for our taking. It's really nice to see how other ppl do things, some things work and some do not.

    LazyMan

  • That's some great stuff you got there. 5/5

  • Thank you di42591

  • Very good job LZ(I've done this work for part-time pay). You have a nice iron w/temp control. So right about the lead solder. Silver is the worse to work with, imho. Look forward to your next vid;-)

  • Thanks Box0Rain, this new soldering station is a step up from my old, cheap soldering iron. Couldn't find my old one, so I thought it's time to buy a new one anyway.

  • Thanx for the video lazyman..

always something intresting in the videos

    keep it up

    -spike

  • Thanks Spike, i gad you find my vids interesting!

  • what happened to HD?

  • Freak'in YT

  • Your putting 110% effort into each component you install. Good job, keep it up x

  • I try to do my best, I believe if your going to do something, do it the best you can........or just sit on the couch and watch re-runs LOL

    Thanks

    LazyMan

  • Nice video dude! Keep-em coming! 5/5

  • Thank You!

  • Yeah I'm fortunate to have a computer room/office, I only have my laptop in my bedroom. And I normally put my computer to sleep at might.

Also I don't think the red ones I installed are as bright. As far as the Nzxt, I really like it, I also though it was more appealing, but the blue LCD screen wasn't fitting in with the Blk/Red theme.

I will use it in another build or in stall it in one of my other Rigs.

    Cheers

    LazyMan

  • By the way, what camera do you use to record?

  • Canon HF S100. I have a video review on it,

It's in STD Def, with my old camera

    Cheers

    LazyMan

  • WOW THAT AN EXPENSIVE CAMERA D:

You must make good money :-)

  • Yeah, I guess I do alright. It's a excellent camera though. I highly recommend this camera, if it is in your budget.

For YT vids it may be a little overkill, but I use it for family thing too.

  • Another AMAZING video!

    Keep up the great work!

Also, what's with the HQ and not HD?

  • I.m not sure, will have to look into that. Rendered the same as always.

Fuck'in YT, well got to blame someone LOL

  • Awesome vid and tutorial bro. 5 Stars

a friendly tip i have to give for desoldering,

I heat up the led/wire that is soldered (i mean i heat up and melt the solder). Then i take out the wire/led out. I keep the iron intact with it so it doesnt solidify. Then suck the solder with the pump from the other side of the board.

  • Nice tip bro, I will have to try that. My ears are always open for great idea's.

Yeah I also realized that if I keep the tip on both pins at the same time they were much easier to pull out. DUH!

    Thanks

    LazyMan

  • This is a really excellent how to video... Nice job man

  • Thank you very much!

    Cheers

    LazyMan

  • I need to redo the leds on my zalman fan controller

There stuck on purple for some reason...

They are meant to go from blue to red.

  • Thanks Bro!

Part 2 should be posted in a couple of mins.

    Should be helpful.

    Cheers

    LazyMan

  • Great video! First time ive seen this done...looks like a lot of prep is involved. Maybe one day ill get into this stuff.

  • Thanks bro, it actually is pretty easy. Just like anything else, setting up is the hardest part.

Part 2 will be available in 25:37 min, watch that and you will see how easy it is.

    Cheers

    Lazyman

  • wow great tutorial man 5*

those close solder points are a pain lol

  • Yeah, i had to put on my reading glasses just to see what I was doing, LOL

    Cheers

    LazyMan

  • LazyMan, good soldering tutorial. It's actually one of the better ones on YT. I tinkered quite a bit with soldering when I was messing with airsoft guns but I never really mastered it. I think getting a nice digital solder would help but steady hands and patience are also key. You should put "soldering" in your tags. Nice work.

  • Thanks hkajita, added it to my tags. Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, a steady hand is a must, and good vision.

My eyes are so bad, I can see it better on the video than when doing it in real life, and I had on reading glasses. lol I quess it's time to go see the eye doctor.

  • The lengths you go to just to make the color scheme of your build come through!! Man your toolset is extreme. Looks like you paid Radio Shack a nice visit! Excellent soldering tutorial... looking ahead to part 2!

  • Yeah, couldn't find my old cheap soldering iron, so I though what the hell, lets get a nice one this time. Actually bought it at Fry's, they've asked me if I sleep in the parking lot at night so I can be there when the doors open LOL.

    Have a nice night bro

    LazyMan

  • nice tut man very good job ive been soldering for a bit so i know that the tips are good ones :)

  • Thanks, been pretty happy with Weller, actually I have never used another brand, so I have nothing to compare it to.

  • Outstanding bro, you make it look easy!!!

  • It is easy, well once you get the hang of it. I hope this 2 part vid will help someone.

  • Awesome work man 5/5*

  • Thanks bro!

  • love the explanation of soldering, ive always have had a problem with it, i can never understand why my solder would not stick to the thing im soldering, and would just stick to my tip of my iron.

  • Yeah, you can also clean the area by using alcohol and a copper tooth brush to remove all impurities. Also you may have been using a lead free wire, which is much harder to use.

  • i think it has alot to due with me never tinning my tip, and i dont have any of that wool stuff you have, i use a damp paper towel to clean my tip. So yea, im going to go out and buy a new tip and some of that wool and keep my tip nice.

  • That sound good, don't just use any steel wool, the one they sell is for cleaning a soldering iron. I've read that some steel wool can ruin your tip.

  • very nice lazy man

  • Thank You!
