  • Were these guys fans of Mountain at all?

  • @Apathesis0 I would hope so. I'm a life long Black Sabbath fan, but in some ways I think Mountain is even more influential on this kind of hard rock/metal.

  • @guitarhat I saw Such Hawks, Such Hounds a few months ago and they mentioned Mountain and played "Never In My Life" in the background near the beginning. Ever since then I've been hooked. I had known about "Mississippi Queen" and I knew Michael Schenker was a huge fan of Leslie West, but I could never seem to find the right stuff to get me into them. It was a godsend that song was in that documentary.

  • i dont even like metal, but this is amazing.

  • I thought it said this song is heavy?

  • what's the difference between dopesmoker and jerusaleum version ??

they are exactly the same o O

  • @sapiopneumoni Jerusalem is a shorter version as Dopesmoker was rejected by their recording company for being too long, i think anyway, but its not much shorter

  • i never said i invented it..and i played back in 1977 and forward....although not for many years now...

  • Soundz good but, damn, the intro is long as fuck.

  • funny when i did this 20+ years ago no one liked it...go figure....

  • Should I be high to enjoy this album? Because I'm really just not feeling it right now.

  • @davethehostage It'd help.

  • @davethehostage Getting high helps everything along...do it now!

  • 28 people couldnt handle the doom.

  • Music actually CAN BE THERAPEUTIC! Wowww. Thanks, Sleep.

  • If Matt Pike, Al Cisneros, and Chris Hakius started a band... it would sound like this... actually, wait a minute... ಠ_ಠ

  • Reunite for one more time and play this ALL live.

i ll come wherever on this planet (or even another one)

  • @themisomagos Dude, they're playing Terminal 5 in NYC on June 22nd, but whether or not they're gonna play Dopesmoker or not, I have no idea, but I sure hope they do!

  • @HYPERZEPHARIAN But i know that they won't play dopesmoker. And even if they do, it won't be hakius playing the drums, so it won't be the same. I saw the guys on their reuinon of 2009 in UK. It was amazing and i was just hoping for a replay where i would be able to enjoy the whole 63min trip to the "Riff filled Land".

    thanks for the info anyway.

  • @themisomagos Even with a different drummer, I think it will be almost as amazing, but I doubt they're going to play all 63 minutes - they usually just play a 10 minute version live, right?

  • @themisomagos Holy shit, this was insane at NYC, they played a 22 minute version, and it was fucking insane! Roeder, the drummer they had, kicked some serious fucking ass!

  • @themisomagos nai re mageeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • 23 people aren't dopesmokers

  • zzzzzz

  • Boring and repetitive as Drone

  • fuck yes

  • twwwwwsssss! ssp sssp....YEAH!! The 22 who didn't like this have butt hole scented fingers.

  • dont know why but every time i listen to this and part 1 &2 i always think of those massive big elephants and those mercenaries riding them in lord of the rings. -,,,-

  • its about the journey running through the holyland handing out weed.Theres guys were very smart reading about old testament from the bible etc.Dont be fooled by the fact there stoners.Besides they didnt sell out there music made what they wanted to make and not gave a fuck.

  • fuckin epic....

  • This is so thick and dense overall, it is amazing when these sort of delicate and light "soft rock" influenced pieces show up. Like right towards the end of this first section, the "even darker than sabbath" mood gives way to a sort of "classic rock" segue. I am so into the dark, thick, syrupy parts, definitely, but the light parts are also a real treat. These guys are AWESOME.

  • THis part of dopesmoker makes me think of a race that is completely cornered in one place that is surrounded by enemies, and its preparations for its final stand. when the drums kick in is the battle, and as it mellows out and has the chimey thing at the end is like their ascension into "heaven" and history and stuff. And then after the really fast drummy part is like the rest of the world descending into chaos.

  • Comment removed

  • I still can't do the math of the intro of this track... how many measures, where the drums come in... grr. GREAT song though.

  • @ragejg And yet it feels like there's one. You know there's one.

  • epic

  • The longest song in world...

  • I'm still waiting

  • when does the music start?

  • Ok people have there tastes I respect that but he played the same note over and over again if that is music to u good but if it is I should be a star hell id throw in an extra note just to show you I'm even more badass lol

  • @srhstonersk8r make a sludgy doom record half as good as this then, double dare you.

  • @srhstonersk8r...If you'd like to hear Mr. Pike play far many more notes, you can listen to a variety of other Sleep songs as well as his current work with High On Fire. Heck, you could even listen to the rest of this song, as it is over an hour in length and contains a veritable cornucopia of notes, I assure you. In any case, if you're adverse to drone notes, you should probably avoid doom metal, as mocking doom for being monolithic is like ragging on Slayer for playing fast. Just sayin'.

  • @JimsTap Check out Kalas, too. Pike is the vocalist, but he plays guitar on one of tracks, and his typically awesome wild-man vox are on full display. fans of HoF will love it.

  • @srhstonersk8r

Dude, this song is an hour long. This clip is just the intro. Listen to the whole thing, it's got solos n´shit...

  • @srhstonersk8r you suck at music

  • i once lived in a carcas of a dead cow

  • Ok, the pretzels and goldfish crackers I bought are gone......any explanations?

  • I regret to have to do this... but bills/eternal debt needs paid. Am selling my OG 2xLP copy in PERFECT condition if anyone is interested... hit me up

  • i listened to the first minute they played the same fucking note fast forward to 2 minutes same fucking note am i missing the music or is there even any

  • @srhstonersk8r

You're missing the point, this is not about diversity.

    This is about,

    PURE.

    RAW.

    FUCKING.

    SOUND.

  • @aarrggcchhttt

    Well said.

  • @srhstonersk8r You obviously have no idea what doom is all about.

  • 5:25 - My world collapsed in on itself. Fucking love this record, blasting it high as shit, one of my all time favorites. A monolithic homage to Marijuana, MASSIVE amplification and, above all, THE RIFF!

    PROCEEDS THE WEEDIANNNNN....

  • Why is there smoke coming out of my eyeballs?

  • 15 don't have functioning thumbs

  • 15 people need to take their dicks out of their purses and man up

  • Wait...Isn't Dopesmoker the same as Jerusalem? Were the two released on different albums?

  • @Skateoftheunion jerusalem was the earlier release of the song where the song was split into several 'parts' (tracks), which is not how Sleep wanted it done. So tee pee gave them the opportunity to re-record it all as one long track as they originally wanted. same song, different recordings. oh and dopesmoker comes with the track sonic titan too. i might not have explained that the best, so just wikipedia "Jerusalem and Dopesmoker". it explains that shit better than me.

  • @Skateoftheunion heard they turned this into the record co, and they wouldnt release it. so they edited it and rewrote lyrics and called it jerusalem so still no go. at that point i think the band separated due to frustrations with the label. i think later jerusalem was released, and then later still, the ORIGINal Dopesmoker

  • @putdownan8dude when the vinyl arrived in the mail i nutted on the spot..

    Life is great.

  • jus slowwww down manzzzz thorazine freeze your mind get stuck lace your fucking weed with formaldehyde SLEEP motherfucker sleeze out and down + + +

  • sick

  • Um... this is the type of music for people who have smoked a few too many of their brain cells away on shitty ganja and yearn for nothing more than the same repeated drowning guitar rifts for 90 minutes. Maybe it's because even when i still smoke up, I don't retort to a mumbling 15 year old who thinks any sound they hear when they're high is the greatest piece of music written.

  • @garaa9696 wooooow, what kind of music are you into ?

  • @garaa9696 True true...LOL

  • @garaa9696 Yeah, I smoked a few too many. You got a fucking problem with it, cunt?

  • @garaa9696 uhh, no, this type of music is for people to listen to, just like all other types of music. If you like it or don't, it doesn't matter one bit.

  • @garaa9696 Its about the energy of the song. The constant stir of emotion and the trance it puts you in. Maybe some people like to be drowned by the guitar riffs. Come on man. dont be negative.

  • @garaa9696

stoner is what fucking ever, gets boring after a few song, all kinda sound the same, BUT ITS STILL METAL!

  • @abc66675 but you see that this is perfection. The dischordant drone is almost like an om vibration, centering and chugging. If you get this from a share site, or link into a big multi-speaker hifi stereo and turn it up to eleven, you can implant that ongoing chord in your cerebral cortex.

  • @glib11 which is the same reason why some people listen to baroque-style classical music!

  • this song was featured in bull murray's film broken flowers.

  • WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED

  • Yeah!!!!!

we want rock, so listen to sleep!!!!!

  • If even the first part blows me away, how godlike has the rest of this masterpiece to be?

  • @PisauraXTX depends on your state of suffer

  • Is the art supposed to be a rendition of Hassan-I Sabbah?

  • Hell yeah, another hour with Sleep, here I come. The fucking riff, THE riff!

  • yeah! weed man. smoke and jam

  • I wanna smoke some right now....weed!!!!

  • saw this live.......................bitch

  • TO λιώσιμο το ίδιο.

  • I can't find this album anywhere?!

  • I had to stop work... What's that awesome shit?

  • Heard this played for the first and only time in its entirety on KMKF - K-Rock 101.5 Manhattan, KS by dj Drewcifer on the weekly Sunday "The Pit" show. Not trying to promote any of the above but never would have heard this if not for Drewcifer who claimed at the time this was "to the best of my [his] knowledge the first time this has ever been played uninterrupted". I worked delivery at the time and made stops all night - this played with no commercials or anything for over an hour. Good stuff

  • @rabbit605

    Holy shit that's awesome.

  • @MastodonDR in that case you would fail at life

  • Whoa. My eyeballs are vibrating in their sockets.

  • @aeolianharmony

    me too!

  • @ChildofConflict

    It's wonderful, isn't it?!

  • The most amazing thing about Sleep, in my mind, is how they spawned two new, completely different bands that both rule in their own way. That's the sign of some truly talented musicians

  • lol, I hate Sherbrooke... I went to a store and asked to the owner if they had "Sleep" he said, sorry, we're only specialized in metal, nothing else, never heard about that. I hate how music stores turned in these days.

  • Saw them in San-Fransisco, Matt and Al and Justin started their set with this part of Dopesmoker. Damn, it was so super incredibly heavy, ear-crushing and air-shuttering. Truly a transcendental experience.

  • Why does this video or any other video of Dopesmoker have a comments section? You'd think everyone who listened to it would have their brains melted. So why am I immune? Simple. Tin foil hat.

  • @DocRavage Nice work =]

  • @DocRavage fry, is that you?

  • "sometimes the riff is just so good you never want it to end"

    !!

  • Immortal. This is the be all-end all of the entire Stoner Rock genre. If the first few chords don't make your hairs stand on end, your heart isn't pumping blood in your veins. With this song, Sleep elevated themselves to the pantheon of greats.

  • its amazing that a band who only released three albums while they were together could become one of the most famous and influential bands in modern doom metal

  • i dont smoke but if i do some day i gotta crank this shit.

  • Follow the smoke to the . . . riff filled land

    Sleep fuckin rocks

this album is legendary among us stoner metallers

  • @D119heavy i prefer the term metalHEAD
