Kids often want to fit in and don't trust their parents' opinions about how to do that. Instead of telling them they are beautiful(on the inside or outside) in a way that may be interpreted as patronizing, it could be more helpful to offer other diet/exercise alternatives that work or encourage friendships that increase confidence and feel like they are fitting in. I wonder if there is a big difference between how girls at risk see the anti-anorexia ads vs. healthy people.
if you ever feelthe need to make yourself change your appearence based on others thoughts or opinions. STOP!!!! just eat food as you feel that craving.. poop when you feel that need.. who cares what anybody has to say, seriously? who ever cares what i have to say? its just words. you are you.. be you.. nobody should ever have the option to make you not wanna be you, EVER!. this isnt just for you tho, its for everyone out there, big small whatever as lilmissgaga said, curves really are the best..
When I was 14 I read about those voices they say they hear when they're sick, and I was like: "Oh, please. They're obviously lying". Then I got sick when I turned 17. Two years later I did find that voice inside my head telling me what to do. I'm still fighting it.
@StudiosImprovistica Is it actually a real voice or do you just personify the thoughts that pop into your head as a voice? Not trying to be rude, I'm just curious.
@FunnyJunkTV When I was pretty ill, I found myself to personify the thoughts. I didn't really hear different voices. Everyone is different, as I found out when I was admitted different kinds of hospitals. Just thought I'd give you a little something as well. I'm male, if that makes any difference.
I'm making a documentary based physical theatre show about ED and I'm looking for interviews I could use for the sound of the show. I'd really like to use bits of the story of this woman, would you allow me to do so as long as you'll get credits for it? Thanks for letting me know as soon as you can. Best.
@POISONOUSHAIRSPRAY it is, once you start controlling everything, it becomes a way of life - an addiction that you cant give up or stop and the ironic thing is that it ends up controlling you - another thing that is so difficult to even see let alone stop
@POISONOUSHAIRSPRAY anorexia is unfortunately like an addiction.. it becomes a habit and a necessity to stop eating and exercising vigorously. they can not stop .. they need to do it///
this just goes to show that is you are skinny you are not anorexic. Anorexia is way more intense. like this if you are skinny and are made fun of for your weight.
Most times I don't feel bad for women like this. Most CHOOSE not to feed themselves on purpose which is pure stupidity. There is no excuse for that. I've been bullied myself but that doesn't mean I should starve myself.
@Kantasyxx it's not stupid, it's a mindset a way of having your brain reprogrammed (sort of) it's not really something you can easily break out of. It's really not as easy as it looks i dont know how to say :(
@Kantasyxx Anorexia nervosa is a clinically recognized mental illness. Just like depression, schizophrenia, post traumatic stress disorder. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain. Not just "well, I think I'm going to just stop eating today."
Put some thought into what you say before you say it, and actually learn about it before you start making assumptions. You just look ignorant and callous.
@xRosexThornsx I always believed anorexia was some sort of mental disorder but never really considered it to be a medical disorder as serious as schizophrenia or depression.
Thankyou Katie for making the future look a little brighter. My beautiful seventeen year old granddaughter has been an Anorexic since she was fourteen she too nearly lost her life.
All of her family are desperately worried about her, she has been in rehab app two years. You have helped enormously.
i'm appalled at all the negative comments like, "But how can she stand being so fat now?''
You guys wake up! It's not completely about being skinny it's about being perfect, and I think she's so strong for actually recovering, not many people who suffer from Anorexia recover. So don't judge till you've walkeda mile in their shoes....
@VladimirTod4ever especially. she also has terrible metabolism now i bet, she probably eats a healthy diet, but gains so much wait because of being anorexic messes up her metabolism. in my eyes, she's beautiful.
@VladimirTod4ever exactly! you can't judge anybody without having gone through the exact same thing or knowing mind-transfer magic! That's why nobody can say that hitler was a bad man - cause after all, nobody knows what it was like to be him and therefor can't judge him, good point!
why people losing weight think that being light is something good?
If you are light, you should have muscles to balance that. For example Bruce Lee got it pretty much right. His body fat was much lower than normal should be, but he had muscle to show for that.
Being walking anorexic skeleton makes you weak(!!) and ugly.
For example I too like to be LEAN, but not LIGHT. I have become much slimmer(was already before that) yet gained 5 kg in muscle mass since started weightlifting
Wow you are such an inspiration. I have a friend who suffered from anorexia and also my aunt was bulemic for years. Thank you so much for sharing your story and don't listen to the people that slate you because they have nothing better to do. you are a very powerful young woman an you truly are amazing.
i hate all those stupid people who call anorexia a disease...
anorexia is a MENTAL CONDITION and its treated as a MENTAL CONDITION.
in fact; i think its the most stupid disease ever! it did not exist untill the last few centuries simplly because people didn't had the need to be skinny in order to feel better about themselves or get attention. but today because of all those skinny models who can hide their torso in a sink drain many girls want to look like them because they think its "pretty".
I'm really glad this woman recovered she has beautiful dark hair and clear skin. She has an adorable house. Anorexia is such a horrible deises and it's even more horrible that it's involtury. I hope no one ever falls into the traps of assuming their too fat and go to drastic measures. Were humans we need to eat . It keeps us alive (:
So many people do not understand how you look in the mirror and do not see that you are skinny. She is right, it is a mental illnesss and involves a change of perception!
I understand what you were saying about the voice. Im not anorexic, nor have I ever been. But, when I get into my really bad stages of depression, theres this voice telling me to just eat eat eat. And I eat like everything to the point where I feel sick. And I know that's not normal for me. Because I dont really eat meals or anything. I snack throughout the day on little things like hot dogs and chips and such. Is that whats its like when youre anorexic, just the opposite? Not eat, but dont eat?
yes because for me when i feel like everything is just too much for me in life. all i can think about is "no food, no food, don't eat, eating will just make things worse." and then you get addicted to the feeling of starving and i just don't know when to stop. so in a way, all eating disorders really are the same. you cant stop eating sometimes, and for others you cant stop not eating. so it sounds to me like you might have binge eating disorder..? idk, but i hope i helped in some way lol..:)
well surely she's only writing from personal experience, and to help other people through their problem? I haven't read it but it doesn't sound like a book about her illness could be anything but seemingly self indulgent
what does it mean when you look at food and just can't eat it?
i look at food sometimes and just feel disgusted (while all my friends eat and eat). i like food, i like trying new foods, and i like cooking food. but everyday i half to force myself to eat. seriously, wahst wrong?
Well, like she says in this video: anorexia isn't just about food. It's a whole mental illness and most of the time we don't realize what were doing. As long as you don't feel that you won't eat something because of some reason, you're fine. Just make sure you're not starving yourself.
@jack00008 I can relate to what you're saying. I love food, but once in a while (often enough to make me feel like a freak) I am totally repulsed. A bowl of cereal is my "anytime food", but when those moods happen, even cereal makes me gag. Sometimes it bothers me for days, then I snap out of it. I don't have an answer for you, but at least you know you're not alone.
Ok this is the second anorexia video I've seen you post that your "12, skinny and eat like a truck driver." So obviously you must have an eating disorder or a creepy obsession with them.
Like, this video is hosed because it's a 16:9 image horizontally squeezed into a 4:3 frame. This makes her appear even more anorexic. You producers need to schedule an appointment with your own anorexologist. Way to go, babes!
A little voice - I do believe there is evil that influences us to do terrible things. Demons are real, but so is God and he is much stronger and able to help anyone overcome these things. So glad you made it :-)
Good for you girl! best of luck with the writing and uni - great to see that you have over come such a terrible ilness. I wish you all the happiness in the world x
A Very intellegent & articulate young lady, who speaks well and has now come out of the otherside of her illness a much informed person. other young people can learn a lot from her.
theres a girl in my school who seems anorexic her wrists are really thin compared to the other girls and my friend told me that she wears 6-8 years old trousers (she's 14) but she is never depressed and is energetic and has a lot of friends so i dunno why she disides to stay that way
I know exactly what she's talking about ,i go through the same thing ever day, i dont eat for days on end and excersise all the time, and when my class goes to the gym for school, I'm sooo excited to go and am always pushing myself using all the machines that I can, all I see when I look at food, is fat, its hard to even want to eat at all, I just cant do it
That's just it-it becomes your friend, someone to hold on to and turn to who tells you what to do to cut out the outside world or inside world that you can't handle.
It's called genetics- she has a round face shape. Round does not equal fat; however, random and pointless statements do equal failed intelligence. You can stick your foot in your mouth now...
i've done the same thing but i relized that i was more quieter than i would normally be. i've lost 20 pounds because i was starving myself. I only did it because my dad called me fat. i've gainded about 15 ofit back so thats good. but instead im gaining muscle.
i'm glad i'm not the only one who experiences ed dreams. I have dreams that i'm so thin i'm dying but in the morning I'm never thin when I look. The dreams are really scary but in the morning I can't wait to see how thin I am but when i look I swear I've put on even more weight :-(
Even in places where being overweight is considered sexy anorexia has the SAME rates (Affects the same percentage of the population) as in countries where being slim in sexy.
There IS a choice involved, but it is still a disorder.
Guys...ok...i think that anorexia is influenced by the media!!!They brainstorm us with pictures of skinny models and they say to all women:"Yes..this is a pretty woman"..then, the women become obsessed with their appearance..and sometimes they reach the other corner..like..anorexia...Girls..come on...Appearance is not the Be all and End all in life..!
POOL, Anorexia is not completely influenced by the media. It actually has very little to do with media. It is masked that way. eating disorders are about control. we can control what we put into our bodies and what we take out. We can control how big we get, or how small we get. we KNow that an ED isnt going to make us pretty or thin. It will KILL us. It's this extreme pathology. I do believe the media isnt always a direct influence. That's a proven fact.
Well said calikaren. There are many reports of cases of anorexia dating back over 200 years. And did we have TV and celebrity gossip magazines then?! For some reason (genetics, personality?), certain people's brains are susceptible to the effects of energy deprivation and starving (etc.) become like an addiction. There are also certain emotions attached to anorexic behaviour, like control. Although all women are exposed to media images of the 'body beautiful', only 1-2% ever develop anorexia.
i'm sorry slate me all you want but like most modern physiological disorders anorexia is a self conscious decision a person isnt mentaly strong enough to be their own person and MUST be skinny or goodlooking to be successful in life installed into the sub-conscious by media and magazines yeah congrats on overcoming anorexia, but if you really were free people wouldnt fall into this trap in th 1st place so like poeple whom commit suicide i have no sympathy because it's thier own doing.
OK, I'll slate bumcarnage. Anorexia is not a conscious decision. No-one chooses to become anorexic. People can choose to lose weight, to exercise etc., but anorexia is a mental illness. As Katie says, there is a 'voice' in one's head or powerful thoughts that instruct the person to engage in anorexic behaviours. This illness is not really about society defining a 'perfect shape'. When you are anorexic you have no choice and are not in control; the illness controls you! I know; I have had it!
I agree with bumcarnage, anorexia is self-starvation, it is a choice. Un-like alcoholism or a dependency on drugs, there is no physical entity enforcing dependency. But similarly to a drug dependency the user/sufferer had a clear choice to start with in the first place "start or don't start".
n0t, you are SO uneducated about this it isnt even funny! Anorexia is NOT a choice. It's an illness. Look it up. Drug & alcohol dependency carries a PHYSICAL addiction, DUH! That's HOW you get addicted in the first place! Yes, you CHOOSE to pick up a drug, but after you've taken it a couple times, your body will start to NEED it. THAT my friend, is a PHYSICAL ENTITY thats enforcing dependency. ED's are NOT choices, they are documented illnesses. Get your facts straight.
n0tlikej0e, anorexia IS self-starvation, but it's NOT a choice. Have you ever had an eating disorder? OK, let me tell you what it feels like when you're really caught in the illness: if you try to eat you have terrible anxiety/panic after you've done it. You feel extremely out of control of your emotions. Some people feel dirty, contaminated and feel they must void the food. Many people go on diets to try to lose weight, but most don't develop anorexia. That's because it is a mental illness!
i agree with 'bumcarnage' apart from the suicide thing, i kinda don't have sympathy for them but you really don't know what they have been through that makes them take their life, its completely different than anorexia.
I had anorexia in 1969, when it did not officially exist. Bullied at school, betrayed by my first boyfriend I took 'control'of my life by controlling my eating. My periods stopped and mum made me see a doctor who thought I must be pregnant(I was a virgin!) I recovered to lead a normal life, marry and have children, but have always been obsessed with weight. After my marriage ended, ten years ago, I began to put on healthy weight. I have arthritis, possibly due to undereating.
I think exactly what the problem is. Even now in the 21st century women are seen as objects for sex or if they are "not good enough" then they are just seen as worthless. Isn't that sad?
And its making us think, well mayb we should be like that, when people should accept us for what we look like fat or thin does it really matter? i dont think so.
Blaming the media for our excessive vanity I can understand. However, as far as I'm concerned, most forms of media do nothing to glamorize the stick-figure
appearance that anorexic females are so quick to attribute to the stereotypical male's view of a 'sexy girl'.
Ok everyone you can move the subtitles!!!!! Its sooo fun :)

So glad you made it :-)

theres a girl in my school who seems anorexic her wrists are really thin compared to the other girls and my friend told me that she wears 6-8 years old trousers (she's 14) but she is never depressed and is energetic and has a lot of friends so i dunno why she disides to stay that way
robo141x 2 years ago 2
do you know if she anorexic for sure? you never know if someone is depressed by the way. and she could just be natural tiny

its odd how her body got so skinny but her face stayed basically the same.
good thing she's better now, its all evened out and shes a pretty person ; )
yayforwhaleslol 2 years ago 9
yeah it's because of the bonestructure in her face
so that you can't really see that she had an eating disorder on those pictures by looking at her face..
XcupcakeXhorrorshowX 2 years ago
I know exactly what she's talking about ,i go through the same thing ever day, i dont eat for days on end and excersise all the time, and when my class goes to the gym for school, I'm sooo excited to go and am always pushing myself using all the machines that I can, all I see when I look at food, is fat, its hard to even want to eat at all, I just cant do it
6xXxSHANExXx6 2 years ago
Omg really you need to eat, and stop going to the gym so much, i know its easy for me to say this but your harming yourself soooo much.

POOLOFGLITTERROULA 3 years ago 2
yes but soooo many people think it is that it practically is :'(
Beffnay 3 years ago
POOL, Anorexia is not completely influenced by the media. It actually has very little to do with media. It is masked that way. eating disorders are about control. we can control what we put into our bodies and what we take out. We can control how big we get, or how small we get. we KNow that an ED isnt going to make us pretty or thin. It will KILL us. It's this extreme pathology. I do believe the media isnt always a direct influence. That's a proven fact.
calikaren71 3 years ago 2
Well said calikaren. There are many reports of cases of anorexia dating back over 200 years. And did we have TV and celebrity gossip magazines then?! For some reason (genetics, personality?), certain people's brains are susceptible to the effects of energy deprivation and starving (etc.) become like an addiction. There are also certain emotions attached to anorexic behaviour, like control. Although all women are exposed to media images of the 'body beautiful', only 1-2% ever develop anorexia.
misstiggykins 3 years ago 2
you mean brain wash.

hi i had ana and mia too, you did well to get better its hard work from 15 to 24 now i still find it so hard to control it lou
robfletcher2 3 years ago
i'm sorry slate me all you want but like most modern physiological disorders anorexia is a self conscious decision a person isnt mentaly strong enough to be their own person and MUST be skinny or goodlooking to be successful in life installed into the sub-conscious by media and magazines yeah congrats on overcoming anorexia, but if you really were free people wouldnt fall into this trap in th 1st place so like poeple whom commit suicide i have no sympathy because it's thier own doing.
bumcarnage 3 years ago
OK, I'll slate bumcarnage. Anorexia is not a conscious decision. No-one chooses to become anorexic. People can choose to lose weight, to exercise etc., but anorexia is a mental illness. As Katie says, there is a 'voice' in one's head or powerful thoughts that instruct the person to engage in anorexic behaviours. This illness is not really about society defining a 'perfect shape'. When you are anorexic you have no choice and are not in control; the illness controls you! I know; I have had it!
misstiggykins 3 years ago 6
I agree with bumcarnage, anorexia is self-starvation, it is a choice. Un-like alcoholism or a dependency on drugs, there is no physical entity enforcing dependency. But similarly to a drug dependency the user/sufferer had a clear choice to start with in the first place "start or don't start".
n0tlikej0e 3 years ago
n0t, you are SO uneducated about this it isnt even funny! Get your facts straight.
calikaren71 3 years ago
n0tlikej0e, anorexia IS self-starvation, but it's NOT a choice. That's because it is a mental illness!
misstiggykins 3 years ago 5
i agree with 'bumcarnage' apart from the suicide thing, i kinda don't have sympathy for them but you really don't know what they have been through that makes them take their life, its completely different than anorexia.
undivided21 3 years ago
I had anorexia in 1969, when it did not officially exist. Bullied at school, betrayed by my first boyfriend I took 'control'of my life by controlling my eating. My periods stopped and mum made me see a doctor who thought I must be pregnant(I was a virgin!) I recovered to lead a normal life, marry and have children, but have always been obsessed with weight. After my marriage ended, ten years ago, I began to put on healthy weight. I have arthritis, possibly due to undereating.
mutherh 3 years ago 7
i think theres too much pressure on girls to look "good" according to what the media percieves as such
StoneMaestro 3 years ago 5
I think exactly what the problem is. Even now in the 21st century women are seen as objects for sex or if they are "not good enough" then they are just seen as worthless. Isn't that sad?
06simpry 3 years ago 3
I agree, Its like size 0 this size 0 that
And its making us think, well mayb we should be like that, when people should accept us for what we look like fat or thin does it really matter? i dont think so.
xmelx93 3 years ago
Blaming the media for our excessive vanity I can understand. However, as far as I'm concerned, most forms of media do nothing to glamorize the stick-figure
appearance that anorexic females are so quick to attribute to the stereotypical male's view of a 'sexy girl'.
