@jaywallace23 There were three of us that worked on this shot. Anrde Staroubodov (I may have spelled his name wrong) designed modeled and rigged the female character, Victor Carlos (on youtube under the name vc3d) modeled, rigged, and animated the creature, and animated the female. I did effects. If you've seen this on any one else's reel then they are falsely claiming the work as their own.
i think the thing that impressed me the most was the cartoon one
there are so many 3d cell shaded games or tv shows don't look anything like a real cartoon, but that one i swear looked like it could have come strait out of a ed edd and eddy cartoon
pretty exciting if they can eventually do something like that in real time
it doesnt matter what software you choose, 3d is 3d. they just have different user interfaces. i have switched from max to maya to houdini. They ALL have pros and cons.
Most of the short in transformer, cars into robot and robot into vehicles, are done in maya. Bet it, I have watched the making of transformer, and they are cool. They used Maya 85.
Please remember how important it is to learn to draw/draft and keep up with the technology, and there are many things school will not really teach you cause if they teach you everything, "they could be out of work."
The best thing about Maya is its Marketing department. Get real. You wouldn't believe how wide spread Lightave is in film and TV and games as well. BTW, a major chunk of iRobot and Transformers was done with Lightwave including the character animation!
I know because I worked on one of them (on set) and I know someone who worked on the other one at a major post production facility. The Lightwave community is pretty tight. We know whats being done where.
Just that it has this reputation for not being as robust for certain things, largely put forward by marketing departments of other apps and schools like the VFS (I sold their entire LW educational seats package to, because they do have a full Lightwave lab, but don't offer it aggressively because of money and threats from Adobe/Autodesk - this is a common practice for companies like Autodesk and Avid.) It's amazing really. But what is more amazing is what individuals are doing with Lightwave.
ok but maya is the best, it was used for LOTR and King Kong and Star Wars etc. I'm sure LW is popular, but I hope Maya will become an industry standard app pretty soon, like photoshop.
Are you serious? I am applying to the Animation program at Sheridan and then hope to move on to Digital Visual Effects. I don't really know a lot about these programs. What do you suggest? And are you serious that the administration does not teach much of these techniques?
OK... well, first off feel free to get second opinions on any advise I may offer.
The BAA Animation program is largely character based. Pretty much everyone in the program has grown frustrated with Sheridan for one reason or another, but those who want to be Traditional/Flash Character Animators seem to be content enough in their 4th year. There are also facilities being set-up for stop-motion, however no plans to incorporate it into the curriculum.
I've heard mixed reviews of the postgrad digital courses, and I'm not enrolled in them so I can't comment. If you have an interest in Visual Effects, expect to get a background in film and animation, but not in effects in the BAA.
If you want to learn VFX, I would recommend Savannah College of Art & Design, or Vancouver Film School. I've heard great things of these two schools. I'm sure there are many others that would be good as well. Wherever you go, make sure that you get the most out of it that you can. Most teachers will tell you that their class is the most important... but that *isn't* the case for *every* individual. Do your course-work. I wouldn't suggest otherwise, you will get something out of it.
Find a school that can nurture you, but remember: in the end the motivation to learn comes from yourself. The industry won't care which school you went to, or even if you went to school if you have the material in your demo to make them think you'll be a good hire.
Autodesk Maya, Pixologic ZBrush and Apple finalcut studio, and maybe some motion capture program (motionbuilder). If u'r running windows finalcut won't work so get some Adobe Premiere program for instance.
The software I use includes, Houdini, Maya, RealFlow, AfterEffects, and Premiere. If there's anything specific you have a question about I might be able to give a more specific reply
Thanks. I'm taking animation at school, but the real emphasis on what we're taught is classical character animation. A lot of the other stuff has all been self-taught (with the help of tutorial dvd's of course).
Is the animation at 0:25 a default animation included in Houdini? I just a demo reel with that exact animated fight scene.

The music works really well with your amazing demo reel...thanks!

was that music a rework of a scene from the movie Legend?
petshop00 1 year ago
@petshop00 No, the music is a song called Rediscovery by Symphony X off their 2000 album "V"

All of this is amazing! I'm hoping to be an animator myself one day and it's things like these that can help inspire me to keep at it!

DONT GO TO THE VFS!
The place is nothing more than a marketing department for A/W and Adobe/Autodesk.
Get the books, get Lightwave (9.2) and lock yourself in a room for 6 months.

For what it's worth, Maya was my first package, and while it was pretty easy to get started with... I'd take Houdini over Maya any day.

im sure houdini is better for effects. but MAYA IS BETTER AT ALL OTHER THINGS.

I would personally suggest finding a different school. Everyone here is essentially self-taught due to the poor administration.
Visual Effects for example, is not part of the undergraduate curriculum whatsoever.

I see, thanks for the forewarning.
