Many dog owners think that the dogs only need food when they are actively working, which is during winter. They stop feeding them during summer, and some even leave for their vacation, leaving the dogs to starve. I read an awfully sad article about this. The animal rights organization NOAH is now working against the Danish authorities re. this problem.

I'm guessing this is in the South of the country, where there is a good deal of fishing. Up North, they'd get fed walrus.
In parts of interior Alaska, sled dogs get fed with gourmet salmon because THAT's what's available.
