Great clip! The Belle is being rebuilt at Wright Patterson and should be finished in a couple years. I live in Memphis and a group of folks here tried to fix her, but our local goverment wouldn't help out. Thank you for al these clips. Thanks to all Veterans.
Later Doolittle recognized that experienced crews should remain in combat. When he raised the limit to 35 missions, it did not make him popular with bomber men approaching the end of their tours.
I had the pleasure of meeting Col. Morgan a few times. He was always a kind man, willing to sign a book or just talk to you. I will always treasure the memory of meeting him.
Just wondering wouldn't they have been just as much help staying in england and training new USAAF crews rather than going home? Not saying they didn't deserve to go back , but its not as if RAF crews had the same luxury if they completed a tour (which was 30 ops , not 25)
I agree it seems a bit strange to pull the best planes & crews out of active service, but the US Government must have decided they were worth more for PR to sell bonds to help finance more planes & crews.
The Memphis Belle a grand plane and brave crew. Down here in Australia the RAAF 460 Sq's Lancaster G for George flew some 75 missions over France & Germany during her operational life. The plane has just had a total and I mean total
Rebuild in 2006, it's based on static display in the Australian War Memorial.FORDROAD AUSTRALIA.
