What about those without a uniform curl pattern or with a mixed hair type? It is not uncommon to see people with varying textures on different areas of the scalp.
4:18 is my favorite! When my hair wasnt in a twist out, it looks like this but more curly. I think I'm 3c! I can't wait for my hair to grow that long :)
some of the people in your categories are a little mixed up. I saw wavy in the curly section and curly in the wavy section. For the most part you're right.
Hi, I love your site, Please stop by my blog and shed some of your ideas, it's for all my girls caught in the tug of war b/t being natural & the 1B, 22in, this blog is for you:
I'm a biracial guy who for a while hated my hair because it wasn't straight, I love asian straight hair, I can do whatever my style dictates(sorry for spelling errors) but I've been thinking sometimes I miss being natural, my hair type especialy for me is VERRRY unique very much like the woman in 2:21 however more redish brown with a blonde tint, and incredibly think and shiny, but still like straight hair, so I'm torn, lol
The thing about natural hair is its diversity, u can wear it straight or curly, the main point is you can switch up if you wanted to. Diversity is key.
@eprahs1 maybe I don't know how to manageit ,to get it straight is a pain, lol, looking at it you would assume it's very managable, I'm not lying though people of all races have told me that they never seen ahir so thick, lol it's Crazzzy thick, so If I want my hair straight I have to leave that wave, and it won't lay down flat, and won't stick when I want it to stick up,lol I've been natural all my life, I'm now 18,lol
@DeCaY45 first you need to find your curl pattern, then search youtube to find the right products to use, find somone on here who has close to the same hair type and watch their videos and ask what type of products they use. When u find the right product for your hair, stick with it. Try marvalousmixedracehair.blogspot. or other types of blogs, dealing with this hair requires alot of research.
@DeCaY45 well you can always blow it out for a straight look and wet it when you're ready for it to curl up again. I understand the appreciation for straight hair but I'm staring to really embrace all that my natural hair can do.
Can anyone help me find out my hair type? I have a very short video with pictures, just click on my name. Just comment on what you think it is (PS: i'm trasitioning)
omg..who is that lady on 3:53 if you knoe her send me a message of her name cus i love her hair and would like to look it up much more for a closer view :)..thnks
what do you mean when you say "dont comb your hair and it willgrow even longer " do you mean that literally or do you mean like comb sparingly and also wat can i put on my hair i just recently did my bc like 3 months ago and my hair is really dry not to mention it knots really easy at the ends and pops off. please get back to me i really need help with my hair.
Hey not all hair is meant to be combed & straightened out like others. If you have really thik & curly hair than it's best to let it take it's natural shape or you can't break it off with a comb while pulling. my 2 cents [=
no your 2 cents is definitely appreciated but my hair is more kinky then curly and i dnt kno wat to do wit it cuz its so dry i jus leave it alone any advice
i'm 3mths as well. wat u wana do is give ur hair moisture. i wet my hair everyday but wash my hair maybe 1-2times a wk. b very careful with the products u use. do ur research on the ingredents in every product u use. and stay FAR away from alcohol nd pretrolum based products. oh nd grease clod the pores in ur scalp so b careful with dat as well. theres a lot to knw in such a lil time. do ur research and u should b fine. i had no help so i had to do my research. check out my vids wen u can. thnx.
Just to let you know, she most likely meant that you should finger comb your hair... look up vids for more info... combs tend to make the knots in type 3 and 4 hair more prevalent and easily break off the hair. Youll like little snapping noises coming from your hair.
I have not combed my natrual hair for six months! My hair is thick and kinky but I realized that I was tearing my hair out when I was combing it. I only need to run my fingers through my hair while it's wet and carefully detangle it with my fingers. I use a lot of conditioner during this process so it's pretty fast. I shed less hair and my hair is thicker and longer! Hope that helps =)
Type 2 is way off. You contain some 3b/c in there. The first image was indeed a type 2a. Type 2b is like Salma Hayek or Shakira. Chilli is a type 3a. You can easily make a 3a look like a 2 by manipulation. Big waves are type 2. Big curl is a type 3a.
I'm both 3B and 3c but I can't seem to find products that can keep my ends oil all day if my hair is down and i have no split ends I just have always had this problem so i would keep it in a bantu knot
Its hard for the oils in our hair to moisturize our hair because our hair is curly oil has a hard time traveling down the hair shaft as oppose to straight hair.
Help... I just did my BC and My ends are so rough.. I don't know what to do to fix it. It has gotten worse. My hair is tangling at the end and I believe it is starting to matting. I really need help. Is there anything I can do to fix this.
I suggest you deep condition your hair. Maybe hot oil treatment. Or products that are for deep conditioning. It seems your hair needs moisture. From now on your hairs best friends will be: organic Shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil and any type of leave-in conditioner with the right ingredients. Also make sure you cut off all yr permed ends.
I have narrowed it down to mostly the natural oils, shea butter, and I mostly use Burt's Bee's shampoo and conditioners. I also use some mouse or IC hair gel. As for style, i usually do twistouts or bantu knotouts, or the usual afro puff. But every now & then I rock the Afro. What i do when styling my hair I do the twist or knots wet, let them completely dry, after they are dry I take them out wet my hair again so the style falls like I want.
I decided to cut off ALL my hair and wear a barber cut, which I wore for approx 3yrs I recently decided to allow my hair to grow and let my NATURAL hair just do its OWN THING and OMG---is this what I have miising out on,,, I am soooo IN LOVE WITH MY HAIR!!!!!!!!! Beautiful 4a curls everywhere..Thanks to my Natural Diva's on Youtube my journey is EXCITING and AMAZING!!
I want to know my hair type too. but i will guess a 4b, Its pretty thick but not the thickiest, its soft, wavy and curly at the same time. My hair gets extra curly when wet, then when it dies its get wavy. Wiered but o well, Im just guessing of 4b still, maybe some part have 3C, who knows
HELP i have been natural since feb. 08 and i luv my hair it was kinda cut in a style when i was transitioning, but one side of my hair has tighter curls than the other im not sure if its due 2 the lenghth, years, of wrapping or what. i have considered getting it cut it fix the problem, what do you think.
U may have two different hair types, which by cutting it, wouldn't solve the problem. If not, have some patience and give it a couple of months to see what it does. When I stop straightening my hair, after a couple of months my original curl pattern started to develop. The more u wear your hair in its original state, yr birth curl will develop.
simone: i have the same thing, One side is looser and the other side is kinkier. I realize that if it grows out they began to uniform better. Also, if you use a product ur hair enjoys, your hair texture will begin to look pretty much the same, Whenur hair is dry and nasty, it stands out a lot more. When I started using giovanni smooth as silk shampoo conditioner and direct leave in...my hair was similar all around.
So don't worry, just let it be. don't put a texturizer in it. trust me!
can someone help me figure out my type ... ok so with out my blowdrying my hair..its very wavy, curl, and thick when i wash it.. it dries up very quickly and shrinks up.. but when i blow dry my hair is huge
well you cant go off that alone. when it's blow dried you cant really tell your hair type. it has to be natural to figure it out. my mother gave me a good tip ... theres 123 and 4. most black people are 3's and 4's. theres 4a which is coily and really tightly curled. and 4b is a little more coarse than 4a. if you have wavy hair though you may have 3c hair. look 3c hair up on google for pictures and that may help you. :)
contd: so i am really confused, is there a name for my hair type? i didn't even know till now that different natural hair types were "classified" as such (i never do much to my hair, wash condition and put some cream or serum on it, it grows wild, when i get tired of it i simply cut it or shave it), so i never understood the question: what's your hair type girl? when i went to a black hair shop to buy some hair cream. Thanks for helping. I like the vid btw. ciao!
I think the reason they came up with differ. hairtype because differ. curl patterns need differ. types of maintanence. For example, type 4 Kinky needs more special care because its more fragile than the other hair types.
Thanks. I watched the video several times and did a bit more research. I think i am mostly 3c and 4a from all the pics and descriptions i came upon. Although views seem to differ quite a bit. At least when i buy products now, it will be with an idea of what i should be looking for. I usually just grab whatever i can find! :-) helpful vid. Merci.
This is sort of confusing. My hair is natural. Its tightly curled (breaks and knotts at the ends--unfortunately). The curls are defined when wet they droop and when dry shrinks. When I pick it into a fro it feels fluffy to the touch. What hair type does that make me?
hmmm, my hair doesn't seem to fit any of these. Can someone have combination hair? My hair is short as i have just cut it, about 2 or 3 inches, depending on if i stretch the curls. like at the back of my head: hair is almost straight imagine hair at 1:37 short, before it starts to actually curl, but as you progress upwards towards the middle, it gets thicker and tighter curls, like coils (5:24), but then the curls start to loosen up again by the time you get to the front, like at 5:16 or 5:21
Every single hair type on this video, was truly amazing..honestly how lucky are we to naturally have such beautiful thick hair, the world should envy us. I love everything about our hair, and im so proud to be apart of the natural community, really nice vid!!
