  • The new room 101 is crap.

  • Fry nicely twigged Merton's 'working-class' act at 3:47 Merton's facial reaction was classic.

  • Believe me I have nothing against the Northern Irish at all, who would dare !

    Ye-ha.

  • this is a good idea for a show. Did David Mitchell ever do an episode? It could easily go for a few hours.

  • everything fry said between 8:55 and 9:40 needs to be condensed, refined, and quoted to every person in every language

  • @AerynRavanna I'd have to disagree, Beauty is subjective for one, but also their are hideous things in nature and he seems to be excluding humans from nature when humans are nature and the bi-products of humans is nature (buildings are naturally occurring phenomena of humans.) Like beaver damns or spider webs.

  • @ronocko its not the same

  • @p1nkAcid Ofcourse it is and why wouldn't it be? Because as soon as humans manipulate nature as oppose to other animals it becomes unnatural!

  • @ronocko animals use nature but they dont change it, at least not on a dramatic scale

  • @p1nkAcid And that's basically what it comes down to scale. Theres really no reason why Humans shouldn't be allowed to expand as we have the earths not going to do anything else atleast ultimately everythings going to tend towards entropy, that isn't to say we should completely trash it and not give a fuck but our civilizations and technology are great and inevitably can improve on nature and help it thrive (as long as we don't kill ourselves.)

  • Amasing speech at the end there.

  • is there any about clowns, because i'm doing this for my English course work and i'm looking at this for ideas but i really need help, let me know? thanks :)

  • Yes, the show is coming back but they are revamping the format. To that of a low-grade gameshow*. Why the hell they thought they needed such a change to such a good concept is beyond.

*OK perhaps not in the traditional sense but when you use the description "three celebrity guests (...) battling it out to dispose their pet hates in a number of categorised rounds" it really is no better than one and frankly Room 101 deserves more.

  • Hmmm, the host looks like he's wearing platform shoes. Possibly an optical illusion.

  • For those looking for a comeback, you're in luck. Frank Skinner's hosting it and it's back soon.

  • I just thought I should watch some Stephen Fry to make myself feel better, so works

  • Why didn't anyone throw Hello! or Ok! magazine In there.WHY?

  • @reprovo i'm sure there was an episode where someone sent those magazines into room 101... if only it were possible to do that in reality!

  • I wonder what Stephen thinks of Charlie Brooker...

  • @friendofidiocy Charlie Brooker isnt just a critic he is a brilliant writer

  • @Bot23 yes, that's very true actually

  • so, I just looked this up because I was curious and because I read there was a song by this name ... but a tv show? woah. ... I'm currently reading 1984 so ... woah.

  • I think Stephen Fry is brilliant, but surely by consigning critics into 101 he would have to consign himself? By commenting about his dislikes of painted plates etc. surely that makes him a critic aswell? Great posting, bring back Room 101....

  • @caxtonman its not critics or the art of criticism (because ppl need to know if something is good or not be4 viewing it since theatre and movies are so expensive these days) but the fact that its taking up vital space on our tv sets which can be filled by something more tolerable.

  • In a way it's really sad that Fry doesn't like professional critics, because as he showed when discussing the commemorative plate, he's superb at it.

  • would be awkward when I go on and say I want to put Paul Merton in Room 101

  • @jimmy2k4o its already been done.

  • Whenever The Review Show comes on TV, I scream until someone changes the channel.

  • what stephen says from 8:55 to the end of the video, is maybe the most intelligent and reflecting statement i have ever heard

  • @92unitedfan92 it was actually one of the most pretentious and useless statements i've ever heard. He is funny and pleasant to listen to though.

  • @oliaun he didn't say that all things made by man are ugly. but you won't find ugly things in nature. if it's ugly it's probably made by man. anyway, not very important. good day man

  • @oliaun How is praising the beauty of nature, deploring ugliness and encouraging the search for beauty in the human race useless? How is any such statement useless? Vladimir Nabokov once said that art is only important to the individual, and the same goes for statements such as the one Stephen makes from 8:55 onwards. It may be useless to you, but is no doubt useful to a generation of people who do feel guilt at some of the ugliness man has produced.

  • Best guest ever!!

  • What does Stephen Fry say from 3:30 to 3:41? He says three fancy words and I want to know what they were.

  • @danutcase66

pince-nez, degage (with an acute accent on the second e), and femme savante.

Out with the French- English dictionary.

  • i miss Room 101, i think it's time for a comeback!

  • @TheSammyJJ There Planning to bring it back hosted by Frank Skinner

  • @TheSammyJJ I agree it should comeback it was brilliant Room 101/1.

  • @TheSammyJJ It's on its way apparently, in 2012.

  • @TheSammyJJ It's starting again in the new year with Frank Skinner as the host :D

  • @TheSammyJJ Well guess which shows returning on BBC One in 2012!!

  • @TheSammyJJ It's back in a slightly different format soon on the BBC

  • @TheSammyJJ

    it is back

  • @TheSammyJJ They've done onw now, it's now a shit panal show :(

  • Video stops at 2:50 for some reason

  • i actually found his plate-based remarks on beauty quite moving, damn you stephen you emotional bloody ninja

  • What he just said about beauty and art was wonderfully put.

  • It's ironic that he's going on about wasting tv time with criticism on a show where you criticise the stuff you don't like.

  • @WalterLiddy Exactly what I was thinking! But I still love Stephen Fry though!

  • @WalterLiddy it's a comedic show, the shows hes comically criticising are not.

  • itd be illeagle for stephen to go for primeinister cus the vote has to be fair in this country =P

  • To my mind Stephen Fry is being a bit snoby here. I agree that the little girl plate is rather vomit making but the tiger is actually quite well done. I admit it exists on a commercialised plate, which is billing itself has something it isent. As an object, yes, it is a waste of space. However, the picture itself had a degree of skill inherent in it, nice use of perspecitve and technique. I bet the artist created it simply as a result of inspiration but it has been used for another end.

  • @BelatedCommiseration IMHO it's not that the picture of the tiger is bad (it isn't at all!), but the title "snowy quest" is awful and that's the bad thing about it, like it's trying to sound like a grand piece of art when it's only worth a couple of quid...

  • He is a remarkable man.

  • I thought this was about Stepheny Fry and 1984's room 101, and what would Frys worst fears be.

  • @bfoaliali

Nah it's a english late night (well it was on about 11pm) tv show in which Celebrities have to try and convince Paul Merton and the Audience that there Pet Peeves are worthy of being locked up in the Metaphorical "Room 101"

  • @Georgelangham *British

  • stephen says critics are idiots... ok

  • Poets and philosiphers are the people who say what intelligent people dont feel the need to say...

    I love them :D lol

  • crap video

  • shophon fro

  • nature is not beautiful. it's an extremely violent, brutal and ruthless sphere of life. every living thing in the natural world wants to eat everything around it, nature is just as destructive as everything else. it's a constant jihad.

  • i liked the n. ireland quip, i live there, can't wait to leave.

  • not necessarily*

  • spiders, snakes, and swamps are all ugly and paintings, sculptures, and architecture can be quite stunning so thats necessarily true

  • @kemp10 I don't think spiders and snakes are ugly...

  • when stephen fry meets god,god say "i gave you two arms two legs and a sole make sure they are all put to use as best you can"

and stephen fry said "oh i thought you said two arms two legs and an arsehole!"

  • @KeyserrrSoze thats where i heard his reasoning. yeah he is really good

  • @The5thScribe Stephen fry :D but hes not in seaosn 3 :( only season 2 :D:D bones fucking owns every other serious ay.

  • I just noticed that this guy is from BONES. He's Sealy Booth's Phsyciatrist :D i love bones <3

  • @whiteaydanwhite: You'd probably love "A Bit of Fry and Laurie". Bits and bobs here on YouTube. He works very well with Hugh Laurie.

  • Stephen Fry for pope!

  • @lIlLLinIlI Stephen would never be pope, he hates the the pope and the catholic institution.

and after hearing his reasoning, i don't blame him.

  • @RedKingCommandz I was actually referring to a QI episode about subliminal imaging, where the message "Stephen Fry for pope" popped out =P

  • @lIlLLinIlI oh my mistake :P sorry lol

  • I do believe Stephen arrived at transcendentalism at the end there. Nature is beautiful, man-made things are ugly, but the idea that this leads to aggression is interesting. I love this man!

  • @Rockrgrl350 Not all man-made things are ugly. And anyway, that's not quite what Stephen says.

  • a national treasure

  • That Northern Irish accent was spot on lol

  • Is it just me, or did the creators of Ratatouille might have seen Fry's rant on critics?

  • Though many critics are pretentious, the reason why people listen to them is because they know how to articulate their opinion in a way so it's easy to see how they came to their conclusion. In that way, people are aided in whether or not they should partake in that certain item. I think they're necessary as an aiding tool of sorts, and people are generally just sharing their opinions, really.

  • this sounds really anal, but what month in 2001 was this transmitted?

  • @ThreeWordsFirstWord Original Air Date—12 March 2001, from IMDb!

  • @brollan1234 ahhh, thank you :O)

  • Mr Fry employed perfectly executed rhetoric to ensure Critics entered Room 101.

  • Love Stephens Northern Ireland Impression. Absolutly perfect

  • I've noticed that most critics are people who have never contributed anything in the field that they are criticizing. I've seen many who are just geeks and nerds who have no credentials to speak of, or even worse, no experience. They have a music/film/video game collection that goes from here to the Moon but nothing to show of their own, and their mouths (unfortunately) are as big as their collection.

What right does one have to criticize anothers work if they have no work to show of their own?

  • @abrarrabbi Are you telling me you've never criticised a film or song or book or said that you dislike something without having contributed something to that field yourself? Critics are just people who spend a long time thinking of reasons as to why they dislike things, and sure many of them are pretentious and/or annoying, but I'm ok with that.

Also you're criticising critics without first attempting to contribute something to the field of professional criticism yourself, you hypocrite!

  • @ColonelHoraldo There's a difference between critisizing something, wether it be a film or a book or some music as a person - and being in a profession where's your sole job to critisize things. A huge, massive difference.

  • what?

  • merton shined on this show and is rubbish on hignfy

  • I feel sorry for TV critics. It must be an awful, soul-destroying thing to learn that Stephen Fry dislikes you =P

  • @wahaya2 yeah stephan fry loves everybody if he doesn't like you, you might as well throw your self out a 11th story window

  • he was a younger man then

  • Really, such an insight? The idea that people respond to their physical environment is not a new one is it? The idea that guilt breeds violence is hardly original either. "We're all smiles/then honest/I swear/it's the turnstiles/that makes us hostile..." I love listening to Fry prattle on, but he's not saying anything original here.

  • @rabbitisrich I love this word, „original”. Isn’t it the most wonderfully twisted concept anyone can use to criticise anything really, without an argument.

One of the main reason why people tend to dislike those whose “job” is to “criticise” others is because they feel that somehow miraculously they have a peculiar and personal insight in what is truly “original” and worthy of praise. Self delusion at its peak.

  • Does this imply that Fry actually believed in G-D at this time? and then changed his mind?

  • Only the English could have a show totally devoted to pet peeves lol

  • It's the Direct Line phone and mouse.

  • Has anyone seen "Who Do You Think You Are," with Fry? THAT PLATE is on the wall in his parent's house!

  • @ashburnhouse Tee hee!!! That's hilarious. I'll have to re-watch that one.

    "It's simply loathesome"

    God I love Fry :)

  • very true. A professional critic!, Its a joke job. Love everything u do Mr Fry. Do a documentary on religion please.

  • @Patrick5009 Look up Fry and Hitchens on Youtube.

  • I'm surprised Fry has a problem with critics especially as he has often been on the Kermode/Mayo Film review radio show - hmmmm I love Stephen Fry but critics, really?

  • @TenderHistoryInRust If you've ever read most critics' opinion of him, you'd know why he doesn't have much time for them. (A lot of them are quite fond of that famous reference to Fry as "a stupid person's idea of a clever person".)

  • @tgfabthunderbird He actually says "who would dare"

  • On the few occasions I've seen Fry seem to get angry (on TV) he's been in the same room as Anne bloody Widdicombe.

  • "Who would dare?!" XD

  • O.O oh my... Paul looks bloody amazing here

  • Fry is dapper as fuck in this.

  • @PandaDelight Be gone, troll!

  • @PandaDelight only when they criticise his technique.

  • @PandaDelight how does fuck off sound you troll

  • @PandaDelight one has nothing to do with the other. I, for one, am quite glad that he likes shagging men. Better chance for me ; )

    Piss off, Troll-man!

  • love how well he can articulate his views, not aggressive at all or forcing his opinion on you. He just tells it to you fair and straight (no pun) and is truley genuine about it, can never get over what a nice humble guy he is

  • Stephen Fry what a top man.

  • shit. i feel like migrating over to the uk

  • less-ness-ness-ness :)

  • Stephen Fry doesn't like critics, but we knew that from the endless sketches he did with hugh laurie about critics critisizing critics.

But that was before he saw internet comments on Yahoo articles.

  • Stephen Fry for Prime Minister!

  • @redxenos haha...i would be in that fan club!

  • @redxenos Stephen Fry for President of the world!

  • @toxyc0slime Nooo! We don't want to share! All the other countries can get their own Stephen Fry! :D

  • @toxyc0slime He would be a fine choice, considering how he refers to Bertrand 'by-injection-or-injunction' Russel as 'Uncle Bertie'.....

  • @toxyc0slime You have 101 thumbs up.It Is time....

  • @toxyc0slime Imagine how better off we'd be.

  • @redxenos ...for KING OF THE WORLD!

  • @redxenos ...and Paul Merton as his deputy.

  • i adore stephen fry

i would do anything to meet him ><

  • What a brilliant man Stephen Fry is. I adore him.

  • The last 2 minutes of this clip are some of Fry's very finest---RE, why America is so violent. He argues that nature is always beautiful, man's creations usually ugly; and if you live in a place where it seems that all your very species can do is make ugly and despoil the world, you suffer guilt, you feel worthless, "which is a main cause of aggression." Quite an insight, that people are most violent where they feel most worthless (and so use violence to feel powerful, significant).

  • @Dionysos37 I live in america....I have never been in a fight, never damaged anyone's property or felt owed anything from anyone....yet I'm an american...so when you agree someones vastly over exaggerated understanding of human nature do you for a second think that generalizing an entire nations actions because of the portrayal of the news and dramatized racism to be a bit...stupid? If I'm not mistaken there are murderers, drunks, thieves, rapist, etc...in your countries prisons too....

  • @Dionysos37

as true as it is, i'm fairly certain oscar wilde was the first to come up with that idea. don't quote me on that, but i remember hearing it before, credited to wilde, and considering fry is such a massive fan of his, it wouldn't surprise me. but yes, fry is as eloquent as ever :)

  • @Dionysos37 I agree with and disagree with so much of that....

  • @AlecTheEmo

    I couldn't agree more.

  • @Dionysos37 But it is not fry's in sight to be fair. It was Wilde and the whole ideology of the aesthetic movement. Fry is awesome.

  • @Dionysos37 You're an idiot. He wasn't talking about America when he made that statement. The statement about Wilde being asked why America is so violent was a joke. America is as safe a place to live as anywhere. Fry visited every one of the 50 states, and was treated with nothing but kindness and hospitality. In fact, he said he's rather break down in a small town in America than Europe.

As for American, we don't feel worthless, nor guilt. He was talking about the human species dumbass.

  • @Dionysos37 Totally agree...I wouldn't regard myself as particularly unbalanced or agressive. But when I go into a newsagent and look at the magazine rack and the likes of Heat, Now, Chat (Cheryl hates Katie exclusive! Katie: I feel so ugly and worthless! Vanessa: my gastric band Hell! Sharon hates Simon's fake tan)....I sometimes wish I had a loaded machine gun...just to put the lame brains who waste their lives readying such shite out of their misery...really it would be an act of kindness

  • @TomthatiscalledTom To be honest though, going back to what Stephen said about 'expending huge amounts of anger because you can't find a sock' its exactly the same thing with Heat, Chat etc. They trade off making people angry, or smug. Reading about something we can safely vent over and join in common hatred with others over is a valuable social tool and to some degree has replaced street brawling. I, myself, have a sense of angry superiority when I read stuff like that. Which is why I don't.

  • @Dionysos37 so that just proves Osama Bin Laden is Worthless :)

  • @Dionysos37 Is "violence" America trying to keep peace in 5 different countries every week? Is it domestic violence? is it murder rate? This guy is so full of shit when he talks about nature & guilt b/c Americans live in so many different places so to generalize the perspective on nature of 300 million citizens is extremely arbitrary. Furthermore, America is a leading nation in the maintenance of the environment (& far above England in that category) so let's try not to be morons shall we?

  • @danman745 And where are you maintaining the "Status Quo" ? In every land where there is oil. Open yours eyes and see the whole picture before you start shouting that you have been wronged!

  • @danman745 I admire your patriotism, and as an americophile I wish I could agree, but it's hard to claim that 'peacekeeping' is always the main objective of the American government when it interferes with other nations' politics. If it was, then why not intervene in zimbabwe? or rwanda during it's genocide? Funny how the middle eastern commodity superpowers are always first on the list..However I do understand that a lot of support for these endeavours is actually motivated by idealistic beliefs

  • @danman745 and in terms of the environment, this was aired in 2001, and I hate to break this to you, but America wasn't so hellbent on treehugging back then I'm afraid. In essence therefore I think you should do some deeper research before you start parroting propaganda. But I respect that you clearly do believe in the most respectable parts of america, as I do too and it's not your beliefs that I'm criticising, its the belief that you are right and that everyone else is wrong...

  • Every time he's in an interview I just stop whatever I'm doing and listen <3

  • @glamourennui Congratulations to that decission and Your taste!

  • Stephen Fry once played Oscar Wilde in a film called Wilde...i saw it in waterstones the other day...didn't buy it :P

  • What a guy, what a comedian... 'Nothing against the Northern Irish... indeed, who would dare?' fantastic.

  • It seems obvious that stephen's gay, but when I tell people they are shocked!

  • @willscomix Are they? He has such a good taste, of course he is.

  • What's up with Stephen and his obsession with Oscar Wilde? He seems to quote him so much.

  • @patrick112590 He is member of some Oskar Wild society.

  • check out skinny fry!

  • "this is simply, loathesome" lol

  • I. Love. This. Man.

  • oooh abit of tension, washed away with laughter there. 3:48

  • Right that's it - everyone get off the internet, get out there and create something beautiful. By the way, starting a fire does not count - primitive man did that ages ago.

    What a quality gent.

  • Stephen, marry me.

  • "No-one ever erected a statue to a critic" ~ Jean Sibelius

  • @irishmaestro they didn't do it film-makers or anyone like that either.

It just seems to be political "heroes" and crap like that.

  • Best episode ever. I agree with everything Stephen says on this. I love Stephan, He's funny and you can actually feel yourself getting more intelligent from watching him.
