bob is the 'man" when it comes to being a pilot! he hung out in my front yard one time checking out my home made centrifuge. 20yrs earlier, I got to sit right, seat after his show at reno air races with the engines still crackling... will never forget that! He had quite a show with the nazis in america ... (FAA)
hi everyone, im in a group called Vigorous Ice Blue Eyes or just V.I.B.E. for short, if you have a spare 2-3 minutes, we would just really appreciate it if you took the time out to just give us a listen and let us know what we need to work on
we're two 15 year olds, one of us writes lyrics raps, the other one sings and produces, please check out our channel and let us know what you think
Met Hoover at the VP fair in St. Louis when he perfomed there in the mid eigthies. He was quite a gentleman . I was Attending Parks College at the time and had a ramp pass.
I saw his act decades ago when I was a kid. It was pretty impressive, because this guy would go out and do an impressive aerobatic program in a twin engine business jet. I was in awe.
Then he would do it with the engines off. The sight and sound of that thing ghosting along on the deck with the engines feathered, pulling up into an Immelman isn't something you forget.
Who is the man who was showing off a plane like this, and as he pulled into a steep climb, the wings snapped off, and he went ass over tea kettle into the hard earth?
that shrike he is flying is one hell of an air craft. work on them everyday and have to say if any one else was to do this to these things they would rip the wings off...as many already have.
@flyboy172r yup - I just saw Bob in Oshkosh at the airshow and I can assure you, he is still alive! His license had been taken away because he was "too old" but he finally managed to get it back, so he's flying again! Amazing guy with some amazing stories.
"your definition of a barrel roll is incorrect. it is not a 1g maneuver. you are thinking of an aileron roll. "
Wrong. THink about it. How are you going to be at +1g when inverted if you don't have any centrifugal force? If you aileron rolled, the centrifugal force would constantly be trying to throw you out. Tea everywhere!
Negative, during a barrel roll the G-force is kept positive, but NOT constant, between about 0.5 and 3.
The reasons why he manage to fill the glass are basically 2:
1) the G-force is kept positive (although not constant);
2) the resultant force is kept parallel to the airplane's yaw axis, thanks to his amazing flying skills. That's why the liquid inside the glass is steady like it was on a kitchen table.
Because the centre of gravity remains at the floor of the aircraft. It's the same reason that pilots will black out if they pull too many g's; their blood rushes to their feet and away from the brain. If you've been on a roller coaster that goes upside down, you'll notice that you stick to your seat. Hope this clears it up - very basic explanation.
@LOSBEST-He escaped from the germans with an fw-190. Was flying chase for Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier and flew a p-38, f-80 (in a gorilla suit), f-86, yak-18, f-16 among others. He also performed many routines in a banana yellow p-51
There is one man who can perform aerobatics in front of tens of thousands of seasoned pilots from all nations, many of whom are themselves experienced combat pilots, and awe them all with his skill: that's Bob Hoover.
Simply put: he's the Best of the best. I count it as a gift from God Almighty to have had the privilege of seeing him in action.
CONTIUATION These are "recips" not turbines, so you need about 6 hands to play with the mags, mixtures and throttles. It's not just "hit the air start button and watch the EGT's" while the computer relights a turbine. Driving a C421B these days, makes me appreciate his skill even more!
Having had the privilege of having had dinner with Bob Hoover when we were both performing at the old Reading Air Show many years ago, I have always been amazed at his ability to smoothly restart both engines during the performance. CONTINUED
I think he shuts down the engines for the loopings because it's not a 1G maneuver like the barrel-roll he does. And the engines are not made to sustain negative G forces, so if they were working, they would broke.
He shuts down the engines because he is performing an "Energy Managment" performance. This shows exceptional skill as he only uses the speed that he gained before shutting down the engines to perform the entire routine.
For my 121 check ride we simulated shutting down the engine- PT-64As shut downs are not recommended. My PP ME check ride yes, we shut down and feathered it. Sorry for the vague comment...
all my 121 PC's and my type ride involved engine shutdowns, commanded and uncommanded. All in a sim of course, but i've shutdown plenty of engines in piston twins as a student as an instructor.
Yea right. I do recall. It was years ago when I took my ME course. Since my training was done in actual aircraft and over water we were not allowed to do complete engine shutdown. I do also remember a funny time where my captain shut down #2 on taxi performing a feather check, he pulled the idle ground cut off and I just missed it. Huge report for that one !
Man, Bob Hoover is the MAN! And damn so proud that he flew one of our Sabres back in '61 at Clark Air Base. I've personally been to Clark for my OJT for 2 months and a week in 2007 and those hallowed grounds are witness to the flying skills of this unique aviator! *salute!*
Bob, Steve Nott loved you and was so proud when you said that he made the Shrike Commander 500S more powerfull than any other 500S you have ever flown peace be with Steve Nott and its gotta go. Thanks for making my boss so happy!!!
We will never see a better or more down to earth pilot in our lives. I am amazed at the combination of skill, competence, confidence and genuine humbleness of that man. Never a braggard, and if anyone could be, it is him. There are none better.
I have personally seen Bob Hoover perform his dead stick loop. Truly precise.
