Hey man can you break down the concept of an Arpegio, its confusion me and im play scales like dorian , and all a bunch of others... so if you can please tell how to play arpegios and how to start with them that would be awsome
@METALLMAN1000 An arpeggio is a chord or set of scale tone intervals played one at a time. Start with the root of a scale. Skip every other and you've got an arpeggio. That's the simplified explanation. It can get pretty hairy! LOL
I really get a lot out of your lessons so thanks for posting them. Your videos got me fired up to learn the arpeggios, no small task. I have a question, if I'm playing a I-ii-IV-vi progression should I use the major arpeggio for the 1st& 4th and the minor arpeggio for the 2nd & 6th? Is that how aprpeggios should be applied?
@jstraiton66 Absolutely correct! That is one way to do it. My playing is a mix of linear, static, and arpeggio. Notes are going in all directions. I have fun that way. Breaks things up a bit. :) Thank you for watching! Take care.
@flearis Thank you for watching! I use arpeggios to break up linear playing. I think you get a better feel for the chords of the song when you play this way. It's not the only way, just another way.
Who cares how he pronounces it, at give him some respect for teaching people like myself vital information to get better at my instrument.. Thank you Joe
Arpeggios outline chords. An applied arpeggio can be the simple bassline of a song such as "16 Candles" or a more sophisticated walking bassline in jazz.
Even if a bassist is mostly staying on the root of a chord, he should still know the other notes in that chord.
@emonb0077 I use them as a way of coming up with interesting bass lines. I try not to let my lines become to "scalar". I don't want them to sound like I've digested the scale manual. I mix them up with whatever the rhythm happens to be. Thanks for watching!
Hello, Dany! I can still hear the "I" when I say "joe". There is almost no avoiding it. If I say it fast enough it kind of goes away. I'll do better. :)
I use them as the basis of my solos and basslines in a jazz context.
Because they're chord tones, you can move to pretty much any note in an arpeggio to resolve a dissonant sound.
By adding in colour tones that aren't in the arpeggio by ear and feel (I don't really do much with scales) I can get pretty much any style or feel I want while always being able to resolve to a nice sound.
I more or less ignore scales in favour of arpeggios and experience from playing over chords. But that's just me
Very well said. I agree to a point. I play fragments of scales so as not to sound "linear" or machine-like. I like to outline all of the tones in a key - even some that are a bit outside. Arpeggios are a great tool to cover a lot of ground on the fretboard and to make use of the instrument's unique colors.

Great lesson! I have only one question about it.
What is the diffrence between minor third and "standard" third?
Thank you
cuc333 1 year ago
@cuc333 A major third is 4 semitones. A minor third is 3 semitones.
A minor third is the third note of the minor scale, OR, the third note of the major scale that's been flattened one semitone.

Those arpeggios sounds awesome to tap/hammer-on.
The minor is a bit hard to pull of fast, but I guess with a bit of practicing I will increase my speed.

Hellow Joe,
Thanks for your lesson! I just started learning arpeggio's and I was wondering why you should know how to play them? What is the purpose?
