  • couldve swon that the definition for linear drumming is where no two drum pieces are played at the same time so you cant havve a bass AND a hi-hat......... get your terms straight dude ;D

  • this is not a linear beat .... by definition , linear beats are ones where NO two limbs hit at the same time ... obviously this beat has bass drums coming down at the same time as hi hat notes ... a good beat to be sure ...but it is not a linear beat

  • cool..i want to learn it

  • Hey Nate, I love your videos but is there anyway you can upload your takes in 720p? I like to watch them on full screen on my 32" monitor :)

  • hey man i am a beginer and i will tell you i love it thanks

  • i never used sheet music because i thought it would be alot harder to understand but after about 45 minutes of just trying to play by ear i was so frustrated and started to think i should give up but then i started to think if i cant get it by ear then it wouldnt hurt to try and see if the sheet music would help or not so i printed and i got it withing 10 minutes! never knew sheet music could help that much! thanks!

  • good lessons mate!

  • This isn't really linear. It's a basic rock beat with the hand pattern made linear. The lesson was good though.

  • FINALLY, someone who explains everything in detail. These videos are so helpful. Thank you!!

  • Wow, I'm just starting out really but thanks so much for your hints and lessons. So valuable!

  • great!!!!

  • I thought linear drumming would be NONE of the accents hitting at the same time.

Meaning: Hithat, snare and drum Never play on the same note.. Have I gotten it all wrong then? (:

  • @Tdrahdnil I think you are right, the title is misleading, its not a linear groove, just the hand pattern:)

  • @Tdrahdnil.....This is what I was just here thinking!!!

  • thanks...simple things make such a difference

  • thanks...simple thigs make such a difference

  • thats sounds like the beat from Let Me Entertain Yon by Robbie Williams =)

  • All pratice has levels, we cannot forget that every body was a beginner one time!

  • lol sound like paradiddle .. or is it just me

  • @chaoticjux close, but not quite

  • is it good if i can play all of these instantly without practicing them first?

or should i try something more challenging ?

  • ..Awesome lesson. Thanks!

  • I would still argue that there *is* a definable dif between "beginning" and "advanced" drumming. A beginner is still struggling with the physical "hear/feel" aspect of drumming, and needs stuff broken down, where as an advanced drummer can hear something, or read notes and immediately pick it up with relatively little consideration for the "physics" and muscle memory, bc theyve already mastered all of the basic beats and variations. But, "good" drumming vs. "bad" drumming is subjective. Cheers.

  • @ascetic43 You sir, are smarter (or at least more knowledgable) than 99% of our population. No one seems to realize what you say and its the basis of almost all arguments on here.

  • @DylanGalvinMusic Thanks man. It seems self evident to me, but I think it's probably easy for new drummers to confuse technical and physical obstacles; especially when they're self-taught, and begin with a whole kit instead of the traditional rudiment pad training. These kids are spoiled, I would have killed for free instructional videos like this 20 years ago when I was a kid. This dude is a great drummer and teacher. Cheers.

  • My bad, I didn't mean to hit you with "beginner" . i'm wasn't saying *you* are a beginner or making a judgement on your skill, just implying you're nice enough to break it down and teach it *to* beginners. I think that's probably what most people mean when they use the word "on" you. Cheers brotha'.

  • This dude is a really good beginner teacher, I don't understand why he catches so much s with garbage-"teaching" out there like "expert" village. You're better? Post a video, let's see...

  • I've only been drumming for about a month, but your videos are stupendously helpful. Thank you so much and keep up the great work!

  • Thanks a lot. you are awesome.

  • WONDERFUL THANKS A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

  • Great vid! grtz from belgium

  • wow...love the sound of your drum

  • @rossdag! go fuck yourself! hes not arrogant....hes teaching peeps that could use some help...like me. so go crawl back in your moms basement and play xbox for a few more hours and focus on the drums on guitar hero you little scab stain!

  • i like your T-shirt!! XD

  • i like your T-shirt!! ^_^

  • This is not "linear" drumming. No 2 limbs hit together in linear drumming.

  • @seriously777 : He wrote it.

"A quick drum lesson outlining a hybrid-linear rock groove, broken down into simpler pieces. The hand pattern of this groove is created using the linear pattern concept, while additional elements (i.e. bass drum, hi hat w/foot) are added to fill in the groove. The result: a hybrid linear groove where the linear hand pattern is met with a non-linear foot pattern."

  • nice huh.. i can do better drums now thanks.. ^_^

  • Is it just me, or does he sound like Joe Rogan?

  • ut looks like its not a real drumkit.. looks like its on a greenscreen :P

  • Where is the "love" button when I need it!

  • What kind of snare is this?

  • that has to be one of the most uncomfortable looking cockpits i've ever seen.

  • dude your lessons are great! subscribed

  • nice

  • thanks for that lesson!

  • HAHAH HE SHAVED DAMN,................

  • to all you bitching about it not being linear, hes talking about just the hands being linear. read the description

  • you the greatest teacher :) thank you very much!!!

  • cool

  • "Rock" ?

  • a lot more exiting xD also you're smiling a lot

    you're awesome

also nice "look change" couldn't spot the difference at first ^^

  • cool!. great way to break it up! thanks a lot !

  • not a bad video...and that groove is pretty cool

  • @TBRodd Linear drumming is actually where each limb (r foot, l foot, r hand, l hand) do different patterns...it does not mean that nothing hits at the same time...whoever told you that is full of crap dude. I know...its been 6 months since you posted this...but I just now saw this...sorry...Im a little late ok?

  • You look thinner lol

  • @Slipknot1237 fo sho man

  • Just started. Brilliant lessons. It's great how you break it down into slow, digestable steps, then give us a chance to play it through with you a few times. So many other sites cut to the showing off bit before explaining how the hell they got there. Any more beginner stuff like this would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Where do i find the sheet music for this please.

  • @butterdogjap At 6:41 . He says it.

  • i fckin love onlinedrummer!

i play drums for 5 months now and i rly appreciate nate's work. i'm gettin better and better^^

    *sry 4 bad english

  • You're a great teacher Nate. Thanks for all the cool drum lessons. P.S. On the beat sheet for this, the last note (low tom) is labeled to hit with your left hand. I don't think that is what you intended. It should be the right hand I think. Please click on this guys sponsors on his website even if it is only once, it helps keep a good thing free.

  • omg you shaved your mustache!!!!!!!

  • @slivovich

i guess he shaved his head by himself with a too sharp knife. or whats the reason for wearing this bathing cap? ;-)

  • this was the first beat i learned XD

  • im gettin my drum on christmas

  • change your t_shirt ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • This is great! I learn best by a combination of reading drum notation in my various drum lesson books, by ear and by watching other drummers. :)

  • This is excellent ! Nice & simple & laid back.

  • knowing how to read music is for your own benefit, its like guide, but it doesnt mean that you wont amnt to anything if you dont read!!

  • @sacatreez I can't read music or tabs. I've always learned by ear,Tabs and notation just confuses the shit out of me.

  • I love this. Please make more video lessons of cool beats/grooves like this. :)

  • yeah because there's no such thing as a beginner drummer.

drummers would be so better off if it wasn't for arrogant dicks like you.

  • @rossdag are you talking about nate brown?

  • @polidosk8

nah nah i was talking to these guys who were giving him shit because it's really simple so he's obviously a bad drummer

    i think nate brown's sick :P

  • @rossdag In wat way.......their many ppl in the world who havent played drums be4 and would like to learn!!! This guy is just teaching us beginners to become good!!!!

  • @GamerzRK no no you've got it wrong mate :) i was saying that to a guy that was talking crap about this video...i appreciate how beginner drummers might need videos like this to help them, he was saying that the drummer in this video was bad :P

  • @rossdag how would u call some1 whos just begining with drumming then?

  • @salogeo

    a noob ... aaaaahahaha

  • @metaldude665 ye so whats the differnce between a noob and begginer?

  • @rossdag you seem to be a rather arrogant dick yourself, If i were in your shoes, i would either learn the damn pattern or fuck off

  • @ben2nd mate you've clearly not read who i was replying to, so simmer down before you embarrass yourself any further

  • @rossdag mate you've clearly not noticed that you forgot to acctually reply to anyone and have just left a comment for everyone to mistake your message and feel that it is aimed at the man in the video, so simmer down before you embarrass yourself any further

  • @ben2nd

uhhhh look when i wrote that comment

it was before youtube had this @ reply system

some guy was talking shit about this lesson, and i said that. i think this is a great video for beginner drummers, honestly don't see why people are giving me shit for it

  • @rossdag aah well I would like to apologize for this whole thing then, my mistake

  • @ben2nd haha don't worry about it mate, i should have just explained it instead of being a prick about it :P

  • @rossdag haha its kool, have a good day

  • @rossdag Go for another instrument, the drums are not for you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This should be easy!!!!!! after some practice!!!!!! You need some effort. Are you from the USA?

  • @tjk1160

not sure what you're saying with this

i'm a grade 8 standard drummer... i found this really easy when i watched the video, i was just defending people who may not have been playing for as long and were having difficulties with it

  • wow what a fucking douche, theres alot of drummers out in the world that never learned how to read music, alex lopez (suicide silence) lars ulrich (metallica) charlie watts (rolling stones) theres hundreds more...most drummers learn by watching other drummers...im sorry but your sadly wronged by thinking that.

  • Failing to take into consideration that there is a very, very large array of things you can learn from drum books. Much more than you can learn from listening to other drummers and breaking down what they're playing, and you're going to learn things quicker from a book than from your own hearing.

  • yep, in the same way a lot of people can't read. you can still get along in life, but being able to read is going to help a lot. i find your ignorance amusing though, so thanks for that

  • You can't compare reading written words to reading music....completely different worlds. I can break down what this guy is teaching without reading the notes on a page just fine. Your attitude is overly Elitist.

  • having a skill is definately better than not. overly elitist? not really.

  • all of the drummers you said are really basic drummers. They dont do much beyond fast double bass beats and easy 4/4 rock beats. I was wrong to say you cant get successful, but you will never understand what you are playing or be able to set yourself apart from other drummers. I know your going to flame me from saying all these things and how the rolling stones and metallica changed music forever and they did, but not because of their drummers but because of the groups all together.

  • thy're zildjian for sure

  • Thanx a lot - don't worry about the morning coffe :)

  • nice

  • I know that the online drummer wont answer but what cymbals does he use?

  • Looks like zildjian....

  • Yeah I know but what Zildjians. A's, A Customs??

  • Hahah fucked if i know mate :)

  • Armands. I have them :).

  • Great that was the answer I was looking for since I'm considering getting the Armand Cymbal pack.

  • really good lesson man, really good in helping some of the ways in doing it than the typical rock beat. But yeah, lots of complex beats! Man.. this iss tougher than i tough though. thanks for this lesson again, keep it coming !

  • love the outro...

    and the whole vid :3

  • Good lesson. I liked the one long take.
