The tricky part is, that you have to be absolutely precise and sure about what exactly such symbols are meant to represent. So it's often quite usefull to use more than just one symbol for a special person, like combining the symbols of an element, a zodiacal sign and a planet (or more of them then just one of each). Other ways would be to use a sigil constructed out of the letters of the name, or using the kamea (the magical square) of a planet to construct a sigil.
One thing I wanted to add is that I think one of the original purposes of astrological ritual was to associate one's personality traits with the external, yet normally hidden, cosmos.
