@UncleMikeNJ That would have been an excellent match btw! South Africa happens to be my favorite team! Runs are scored when the batsman literally runs from one end of the playing area to the next after he has cleared the ball safely away. Cricket is really a game of strategy between the batsmen and the bowler. That was as short of an explanation that I could manage.
Love The West Wing and love cricket, however given the choice to watch a cricket match between Scotland and Bermuda (do they even play cricket ? ) and women's softball, I'd also watch softball. As for cricket being difficult to understand, its simple really, hit the ball and run. Team with the most runs wins! See simple! No need for teapots! :)
Seriously, I once walked into a New York bar that caters to Australian expats. They had a match on, I think it was England vs. South Africa. I watched 5 minutes and was confused as hell. At least rugby is close to the football I know.
@wanderlust328 What's also great about it, and just as much a part of their back-and-forth, is Bartlet's self-awareness about his own preposterousness. Because of that, he doesn't take himself TOO seriously. He's able to strut around and be this exaggerated, overinflated ball of ego, but at the same time recognize that he doesn't always succeed in pulling it off. Like present-day William Shatner or Adam West, he can be laughable at times, but he's also in on his own joke.

"Listen, have I gotten any of the names right so far?"
"No sir, but you came damn close on a couple of them."
Will always love how Charlie teases the President without really teasing.

Cricket is not difficult to understand and then enjoy as oppsed to Latin or macro-economics which Josiah Bartlett would have studied heavily.

As a Australia, I also want to hit them in the head with a teapot when someone tries to explain cricket.
