To direct passengers in the correct use of safety equipment :) Same as a plane. the flight attendants to the safety demo INCASE* of an emergency. Its required on cruise ships as well. If the boat were to begin sinking, crews and passengers have to prepare and begin emergency procedures. :)
on my mom's first cruise she was on a Carnival ship and they t-boned a cuban freighter slicing it in half sinking the freighter but the carnival ship that my mom was on, the Celebration, only suffered paint damage, but then the US Navy boarded the ship and took the rescued cuban crewmembers back to cuba because the cruise liner was heading back to Florida. This was back in the late 1980's though.
i guess so...the alarm didn't even go off in the stateroom either. On my previous two cruises (which were Royal Caribbean) it was a very loud alarm that was announced for a long time everywhere...much like a fire alarm.
sadly it appears carnival couldn't compare to RC's safety either :P
@RChris173 Yeah, Royal Caribbean is known for having very loud and very crazy alarms. My favorites are in the Freedom class, ( Freedom, Liberty, and Independence of the Seas).
I was on the Carnival Victory this week, and their alarm sounded a lot like the one in this clip. It was on the PA system, and it sounded on the speaker in our stateroom too, so did the announcements about the lifeboat drill, but after that it was silent (I guess the stateroom PA speakers are used for emergencies only)

And I also noticed via the clips here that some chimes sound on the PA system before an announcement begins
