If you pick "Can't I have you both?", that pisses off Ashley, who leaves, and you end up with Liara.
The same thing happens if you pick that option playing as a female Shepard; if you try to have them both, Kaidan doesn't get mad like Ashley, but he clearly gives up and leaves so you end up with Liara.
In summary, attempting to have them both won't work, so don't try it.
I wish someone would make a walkthrough for this romance sub-plot, "Two's Company, Three's a Crowd" from step by step. The guides that I search on Google or on Mass Effect Wiki just doesn't completely explain it how to do it. I tried to follow what it says but I always end up just only talking to one of them, Ashley or Liara.

@0ptimus1984 well some random asari on Illium states that the reason they can mate with most other races is because the alien DNA isn't actually used in reproduction, they just use it to randomize certain features(skin colour,eyes, voice and reaction time to state a few)then again she could just be trying to piss you off(like a sort of ' Hey, Liara's preganant, and it's not yours LOL), BTW, why is Liara with shep, she's only 108, really young for Asari to have kids, usually their between 350-700

Though Matriarch really is just an age thing, Its their version of being retired, your kids have grown up and you are most likely past your prime, though unlike the elderly you don't retire,you just now are in a lead position for the government 700-1000

It's a tad ironic too. I played through the game curious to see what Williams reaction is if you chose her in this fight, and her attitude does a 180. Not only does she looked helluva surprised that she got picked over Liara, but actually feels sorry for the little blue gal. >_>

In ME3 we find out that Ashley didn't actually die on Vermire. Saren rescues her, turns her into a zombie cyborg, and keeps her in stasis aboard Soverign, but stashes her someplace safe before the final battle. Harbinger finds her, revives her, and assumes direct control.
@TheEmpireOfJarvis pick Ashley and then after the Council screws you over, if you choose just renegade options (when you're by the lockers and you almost kiss before joker interrupts) Ashley will get the point and leave you alone. If you don't want a romance, don't pick Liara because you can't get rid of her.
@sniper00501 If you have to choose between them, you're already involved in a romance and have already chosen who to leave behind on Virmire. With Ashley, if you even hear her email from home, you're hooked. Duh. XD
I use to hate Liara, and it was for such stupid reasons and when getting to this point picking Ash and this actualy happend seeing Liara sadend made me feel like a total asshole and so I had to go back and redo that event again and choose Liara and I love her and all asari. So just her with a sad face changes me completely I have never experienced power like that with anythings else only with BioWare

In ME3 we find out that Ashley didn't actually die on Vermire. Saren rescues her, turns her into a zombie cyborg, and keeps her in stasis aboard Soverign, but stashes her someplace safe before the final battle. Harbinger finds her, revives her, and assumes direct control.

I use to hate Liara, and it was for such stupid reasons and when getting to this point picking Ash and this actualy happend seeing Liara sadend made me feel like a total asshole and so I had to go back and redo that event again and choose Liara and I love her and all asari. So just her with a sad face changes me completely I have never experienced power like that with anythings else only with BioWare
