help, when I do this I can barely see the shock wave, I tried increasing the "max displacement..." but it doesnt really help and I cant push it too far cause its starting to look wierd!

You can just double clip the mask icon to make perfect circle mask.

You can just use radio waves or w.e and use there lightness/luminance, there fully adjustable, no need to make all those masks :)

There's one problem with this tutorial, once you've made the shockwave and its in it's comp, if you drag it around in your main comp, the actual displacement doesn't change, so you have to go back into the comp with your 'donut' shaped masks and move those around, not being able to see your footage behind, making it ridiculously hard to position. Can this be fixed?

@thevfxbro Yeah, the guide layer's great for seeing where it's going to go on the imported footage, but what if I have another element, for example: and explosion on the footage? Then when I go into the shockwave comp, I can only see the guide layer footage, not the explosion. Surely there's a way to just be able to move the comp and it moves all the elements contained within it?

@liljohn560 unforuntaley displacement map doesn't work off changes made in the same comp that's why we had to precompse the shockwave with the position and size adjustments. The explosion can be added in you final comp on top off your shockwave

Nice solution! You know of a good way to make a scale map without ghosting? Closest I can get is an adjustment layer matted behind the map but that obviously creates two values for any intermediate transparency.

Personally I think that whole thing with the guide layer and precomposition was unnecessary because the whole thing could have been done in the original shockwave comp, but still a pretty good tutorial.

@anim8ordude actually using a displacement map will not work with with changed properties in a layer. when moving the shack wave around and changing the size it needs to be pre-composed so that the displacement can calculate based off those changes

also what does the displacement map do exactly? it looks like something the blending mode - sceen or channnel - set matt does. but i think the displacement map does a better job if it does the same thing
