Just to give some quick run down of the story. Mclean's magazine published a total of 22 articles which had a negative undertone towards Islam or Muslims. In response there was a request made by a group of law students to publish a response to those articles but mclean's refused to give them any opportunity to do that.
They never asked for the ban of the articles. They never asked to ban Mark Steyn from publishing in Mclean's.
Actually what freedom of the press entails is Maclean's having the right to control what articles are published in their own, PRIVATE magazine and which one are not, without the coercion of people who disagree with their articles. Freedom of the press also means that those four law students could have gone to other magazines who would agree to publishing them.
It is entirely within Maclean's right to refuse the publishing of the article, no matter how much it may "offend" you.

"Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:...freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication". Rather than using the word speech, the use of "expression" and "communication" is a far wider freedom than simple "speech".

Just to give some quick run down of the story. Mclean's magazine published a total of 22 articles which had a negative undertone towards Islam or Muslims. In response there was a request made by a group of law students to publish a response to those articles but mclean's refused to give them any opportunity to do that.
They never asked for the ban of the articles. They never asked to ban Mark Steyn from publishing in Mclean's.

Actually what freedom of the press entails is Maclean's having the right to control what articles are published in their own, PRIVATE magazine and which one are not, without the coercion of people who disagree with their articles. Freedom of the press also means that those four law students could have gone to other magazines who would agree to publishing them.
It is entirely within Maclean's right to refuse the publishing of the article, no matter how much it may "offend" you.

The Charter of rights and Freedoms guarantees our right to equal protection and benefit of the law. NOT TRUE!
Under workers comp schemes your medical and legal rights are taken by the Feds and Provinces. Workers comp in Canada is purposely denying claims with no recourse for the injured party to get justice. Many are dieing because of this abuse because they are not receiving medical care and are forced into poverty. Suicides are the result of these unfair laws. Fascist Canada. Kill the weak.

People may b*tch about the US, but the one great thing we have that no other country on this planet has is the constitutionally-protected Right of Free Speech. Even Canada, as some have pointed out, does not have such an animal enshrined in their constitution. Let's dump the UN and create a Free Speech Organization, where only those countries that change their restrictive free speech laws to our freewheeling one are allowed to join. Free Speech: It's what's for breakfast.

Canada does have the right to free speech enshrined in its constitution, as others have pointed out. Check out s.2(b) of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms - which is part of the Constitution Act, 1982. "Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:...freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication". Rather than using the word speech, the use of "expression" and "communication" is a far wider freedom than simple "speech".

What is the good of free speech if all the laws,policies, and procedures are designed to keep you in poverty and ill health? You can shout all you want but nothing will change without action. Free speech is a basic fundamental right anywhere. To allow a government to take that is the crime. The sheep are either too comfortable or too stupid to rebel.

He means that Ontario and Alberta are not sending enough equalization money to Newfoundland. Newf, free speech is not a basic fundamental right "everywhere", Not in China or Iran for a couple of examples. I do not want to add Canada to that list. Multiculturalism is going to lead to a ghetto culture in Canada. Immigrents who come to Canada should want to be Canadian. I am 8th generation Canadian. My culture built this nation. Not Iran's not China's, not Sudenese's. PC bullcrap to say otherwise.

There are many other places to get a counterpoint published - I am interested to understand opinions of all. Hey - post a video on Youtube. I think that would be terrific. It is simply not a Human Right to get an opposing opinion published in a private magazine. Don't buy it. I don't buy Playboy.

This complaint has been submitted and accepted for trial at the Human Rights Commission in Canada. This is a Human Rights court case which will be judging free speech by a privately owned magazine. There will be a legally binding judgement delivered.

Human Rights will decide if it is free expression or hate speech aimed at inciting hatred or even violence towards muslims.

Any magazine can print an opinion and nobody has the individual right to expect that a publication has the obligation to hear any particular counterpoint or point of view. This is a ridiculous case.

But if that magazine wants people to take them seriously... then they should be printing both sides, especially when the "other side" is coming from the people they are talking about... Most Canadians would find this particualarily true for a "nationwide" magazine.
