if i would try to pick up the back hooves of my horse like THAT, he would try to kick me or lose his balance.
i always sort of pull out his hind leg and support it with my own leg. while doing this i stand next to his butt, facing in the opposite direction of my horse.
We are currently reschooling two retired racehorses (showing them that there is more to life than racing) and they are as good as gold we can pick out there feet without having to worry about them kicking us but some horses arent like that some horses do kick and she needs to talk about the frog. (we dont own the racehorses but we do own two thoroughbreds and 1 foal and my cassie clydesdale)
The horse whom she is cleaning seems to be an extremely relaxed horse who she has worked with for a while , as you can see shes pretty confident the horse isnt going to kick her
Number one , her shoulder should be on the horses hindquarter , she also has her face right in front of the horses back leg in the last bit of the clip. As i said before , shes comfortable around this horse but if someone were to take her advice and clean a racehorse like she did , you would get your face kicked off.
It does, but it is hard to tell, with one leg white and the other not, i have learned as workin with horse experts (friends, clinicians, Olympians, judges) that white legs make the horse look lame too, so it my affect the size that u see?
I guess, but it still worries me, as i have had enough horses go lame on me, and it sucks! I am like 'vet/carer' for the barn i rode for, i came out and hosed/medicated horses like constantly for a long time a while ago. . .
i always wanted to know how much on adverage would a horse me and including the vet fees and buying the saddle and the gear ect, ? can someone please tell me thanxs
You didnt say not to scrape the frog, also you dont just let go of the hoof. You guide it to the ground with your hand so the horse wont bang his hoof and jolt himself.
funny how you didn't menchin to "never try to scrap the frog, or dig out the frog of your horses hooves!!!" that's kinda a major part when learning to clean out horses hooves! :/
The frog is a V-shaped cushion of soft keratin material. It has a number of purposes including giving the foot a firmer grip in stopping and turning.
It also stores moisture for the rest of the foot(just as long as its not kept hard and dry from neglect), and it's elasticity helps it to act as a shock absorber.
It is also been said that it helps pump blood back up the leg. Keeping the frog clean will help prevent thrush, a bacterial disease.
ok thanks for the advice. as ive said in another commet i never pick that part and i take good care of it i just didnt know it had a name. im not hopless with horses i love them but i am just a begginer
LOL , you sure can scrape and pick at the frog, don't be taken in by these weirdos! Your farrier will even cut big chunks of it off . It's not half as delicate as people think, you just don't go jabbing sharp things into it.
she didn't mention the frog!!!

I dont think so maybe because its white on the bottom and it makes it look like its big cause of the contrast with the brow.
AGAIN that just my opinion. I am probably wrong.

If you lift up the hoof you'll see a long raised triangle going up the middle. Thats the frog. The bit you make sure you dont scrape.
no1horselover 2 years ago
o ya i never scrape that part it just seemed obvios not to scrape it because its part of the horses hoof
