I was born on this year, 03-18-1990, and I lived about 50 minutes away from here. Glad I'm still alive! :D Weird thing is I've always been fascinated with tornadoes. My first nature book was a book on tornadoes.
Wait, does Plainfield get tornados often? I'm moving there in like a week! I live under a hour away, near Geneva. and never had a tornado. A few scares, like a couple years ago, but no touch downs!
@psychojoker131 i know you already moved here but no we dont get tornados often! im 14, lived here my whole life, never been throught one here. like u said weve had a few scares but nothing to worry about! hope you like it here! i do, well because i know nothing else and all my friends are here:)
I went to tom skillings weather seminar last year and he talked about how a team reconstructed this tornado event to see if modern warning systems would have been able to let people know it was coming with sirens and alerts. They concluded that it would be just the same, no warning.
This is bullshit. They never warned the residence it was too late. They did not even no it was a tornado cause it was a huge wall cloud. i drove true there 3 hrs after.
May the twenty-nine who died twenty years ago never be forgotten. My high school class lost one member because of that tornado. I remember the sky that day. It was green. I had never recalled seeing a green sky that day. The tornado came within a mile or two from my house and thankfully my mom insisted on listening to WGN Radio at the time. They were the only ones telling people BEFORE the tornado hit to get into their basements and we did. Scary thing to go through.
from frankfort, il nearby...was only six years old at the time, but still remember seeing lightning while at the indiana dunes that day, and getting home to hear about it...r.ip. those lost.
my geology teacher was talking about this yesterday when she was telling us about the emergency drills. i dont live too far away from plainfield. i was born 4 years after that happened.
My class buried someone thanks to that storm. If his father had been five minutes earlier in picking him up he would be thirty-five by now. The only real warning we had came from WGN radio. Thank god my mom listens to it religiously. The sky that day as I came home from the first days of JCA's existence was literally green. The path that tornado took was a mile away from my house. They're right never say never.
This is my town lol I go to Plainfield central the high-school that got destroyed by this tornado. luckily it happened on a weekend because the second floor was completely destroyed.
I remember that well, I was 17 yrs old. Got a 1990 Ford Crown Victoria from the auto auction that had less than 5K miles on it which had been involved in that twister. The car was a beautiful car when the windows were replaced and the mud which filled the interior was removed (by the way it came out rather easily and looked new!) the previous owners of the car still had their info in the glovebox with the original papers
i remember that very well i was living in northlake ill. and was helping my uncle do some work with his glass company.we were supposed to got plain field that day and the boss had cancelled because of the storm.very scarey
I recall this VERY well. I was in Naperville at the time (football practice @ NCC). I remember that when we started practice (about 3:PM) it was about 85 degrees, hot and humid. Within a 1/2 hour, it was 70 degrees and cold. The watch was called, rains fell HARD, & we went inside to practice. This was an F5 tornado and hit VERY quickly. When the alarms sounded, it was too late. Same thing with Lemont the following year. Almost as wild as the August, 2008 storm. I saw the news that night-WOW!
I was living in Woodridge at the time and it was coming from the nw and heading towards the naperville bolingbrook area. Then it turned and the rest is history , and agony. I now live in Plainfield . 135th and rt 59 area, behind Jewel. God Bless those who lost their life that day!!!
That was my 21st birthday. My grandmother's neighborhood was hit as well in the Joliet Pearson Dr. area. I lived across Larkin ave and saw the storm engulf her sky, Went right into the neighborhood as soon as it was safe to travel and there was a bathroom shower stall in her front yard complete with soap. Mother nature is some chick!
I was nine years old and my entire neighborhood was flattened. There were no sirens. There was no warning. Just darkness. Those 30+ who were killed had no idea what was coming. The National Weather Service still has the blood of those souls on their hands.
My dad called it in after it went through the Wheatland Plains subdivision, the dispatcher he talked to told him he was wrong and should leave the reporting to the professionals. He was telling them as he was looking at the remains of our neighbors houses. If only they had listened.
I've been to Plainfield a few time. It seems like most of the houses there were built in the 1990s, mainly on the western and southern parts of town, where the tornado hit. They also have a system of ACA P-50s and P-10s. Perhaps a couple T-128s too but I'm not sure the one's I saw were part of Plainfield's system.
