He is a fabulous musician, just sometimes he puts technique above musicality, which can make it be a little less interesting at times. Regardless, he's a great musician and amazing to watch.
One has to take Starker for who he is. To me, a great left hand technician, a great pedagogue. I am thrilled by some of his recordings (Kodaly, Popper, Martinue), not so much about the Cassado or a couple of other. To me, the music does not breath enough, it's not Gipsy, soulful enough. Spectacular flying around, if you are into that.

i think his control is highly admirable. i'm not talking about his mastery of the instrument, either. just a really awesome musician

im amazed he doesn't grin at all during any of this, but smiling during performances isn't his type, at all
