I love Clerks and I thought that Clerks II was great but the donkey sex part was too far. I don't blame the old man for walking out, that was kind of the turning point of the movie. It could of been as good as Clerks if he had put in a less shock and more funny ending. I'm kind of on the fence here. I hated the donkey sex so I understand where Joel's coming from but I'm also a huge fan of Kevin Smith.
Let's be honest, when was the last time ANYONE either did or did not see a movie based on the opinion of a "professional film critic" ? They hate a ton of good movies, and happily promote boring ones. I'm amazed they actually get paid for what they do.
Joel Siegel was the perfect example of a critic who think's his opinion on film actually held water. I'm happy that the guy got cancer or anything, cuz that sucks for anyone, but he was clearly a douche bag.
Disagree. Siskel and Ebert gave plenty of good reviews to popular films including Shawshank, Lion King, Pulp Fiction, Terminator 2, Star Wars Episodes IV V and VI, Forest Gump and Titanic.
@funkiersnoog WADR when deciding whether a movie's worth seeing, the first site I look it up on is Rotten Tomatoes. If it's under 60% then I know to ignore the marketing hype, if it's over 90% then I know I won't be disappointed.
Any one critic doesn't make much of a difference, but get a consensus and you've got a pretty big influence.
If you wanna hear this actual interview type in opie anthony kevin smith joel siegel and you can listen to it. pretty funny and great radio as usual, O and A are the shit and this DJ is cool for letting someone talk about them on his show. not all DJs will do that, it takes confidence in yourself.
the thing about critics on movies is that they don't represent EVERYBODY. they represent themselves. I've seen a good bit of movies that critics HATED, but i loved. Critics should be taken with a grain of salt and considered part of the entertainment. In the end it's what you think that matters.
My son I don't even understand you. But thats okay because i'm high most the time and I don't understand a lot of things. But I like your ideas and would like to subscribe to your monthly newsletter.
I admire Kevin Smith, and I love his movies (Yeah, even that sh*tty pathetic "Mallrats"). But what he just on "calming down"... He could have just done that when Joel was still alive. I understand how Kevin felt about Joel doing what he did, but at the end he did end up looking like a jackass(Uwe Boll anybody?). And KS is that way. He gets mad for not liking his movies.

[Continue]Just look at the review he did with Richard Roeper on "Music & Lyrics", he had the nerve to even bring up "Jersey Girl" and asking Roeper on why he gave "Jersey Girl" a Thumbs Down, and giving "Music & Lyrics" a Thumbs Up. like i said, i admire Kevin's work, but at times he need to chillax when it comes to bad reviews, or else, don't make movies at all when you know that it's not going to be everyones cup of tea.
Kevin Smith brought up Jersey Girl because Richard Roeper praised Music and Lyrics for some of the SAME EXACT THINGS he criticized Jersey Girl for....which I thought was pretty legit. Kevin Smith's not a person with a huge ego, dude, he knows many people didn't like Jersey Girl and he had nothing to say about Ebert's disliking of Clerks 2....this guy rudely yelled and walked out of Kevin Smith's screening, which he found to be very disrespectful and he called this guy on it. Not a bit deal.
shitty pathetic mallrats? i know its not his best but he gained most if his base from mallrats. it may be a silly movie but its also the first movie where we learned what smith is all about. (comics, bad jokes, view askewniverse etc.) also JL was great in that movie. there is something very cool about it...i think because it's smart and makes reference to comics and other films. it's like a film made for and about the average "nerdy" guy and his lifestyle.
when he said bad jokes, I think he meant like dirty minded...also to liquid love, Mallrats didnt boost Kevin Smith, b.c until it hit DVD, not even VHS it was a terrible selling movie, it bombed...Clerks was without question the movie that made him and what most people remember him for
Dude did you happen to notice how well Mallrats did in the movie rentals? You could NEVER find a copy that wasn't already rented out for nearly 3 years after it hit the stores.
Liquidlover83 is exactly right - 75% of his fanbase is there because Mallrats was the gateway movie for them. Myself included.
Him walking out wasn't the point of contention. It was the fact that he made a big deal walking out making a lot of noise and stating to people that "this is the first movie i'ver ever walked out on..." to a theater full of reviewers whom were distracted and were immediately pulled out of the movie going experience.
Well atleast he made up for his mistake. I do think that he handled his apology in a very professional manner.

"dying doesn't make that right"
Kevin Smith once again tells it like it is, and not in a heartless or callus way.
I may be bias because I love his movies, but there is one thing you can say about KS, he is a really good person.!

clerks 2 is the funniest movie i have ever seen, compared to all of these new bullshit movies
Crackcocaine9 4 years ago 5
True. Siegel was the the McDonalds of movie reviewers. The stuff KS writes about is something that cool people under err, maybe 40 can identify with.
