Mariah simply loves this song, really loves it, and her's is a great vocal interpretation. Covering a song shouldn't automatically mean it get's judged against the original, to be fair Darlene didn't write the song so it's not exclusively hers. The only problem starts when people decide they must compare, like somehow a cover detracts fromt the original (and that does a dissservice to the original as well as the cover) instead of taking them on there own terms.
