I drove this car for a week. It gets decent gas mileage for a automatic. The things that really buged me was how the suspension was set up. Thge generation before used the same front setup, but the rear in this gen is a torsen bar. It give horrible understeer compared to the 7th and 6th gen civics. This car was ment more for Americans and is a much smoother ride then its better handling and stiffer predesscers. Overall i would give this car a 4.3/5.
I just got an '09 Honda Civic LX in the dark metallic gray, and I love it! I feel like I'm in a little race car when I drive it. The car makes me want to drive fast all the time, and it's so smooth with effortless turning. I've never had a car that made me want to drive so much as this one does. I'm really pleased with my choice. Before my Honda, I'd been in Toyotas and Plymouths, and I think I'm probably gonna be a Honda girl from now on.
I thought honda would be the most reliable due to their dearer prices.
my second and third preferences are toyota corolla and mazda3 but I'm not entirely sure about hyundai. aren't japanese cars more worth it and reliable than korean cars?

@wheely132 they're usually assembled in Mexico, Canada, or some other foreign place. Rarely are they made here. Assembly is a big deal because it affects the reliability. That's all I have to say.

I've driven this same car for 62,000 and unlike Chevy, Ford, or Chrysler....this Honda has absolutely no creaks, rattles, or anything else about it which would make you think it were used. Its rock solid.

I own a 06 Civic sedan and got 44.7 MPG my last highway trip. Here's how:
Keep your civic under 3,000 rpm or 70 MPH. Above 3,000 rpm your car increases engine power by switching to another set of cam shafts, or so I've heard. Don't pass cars if it's not essential. Keep a constant speed. In the city, I shift between 2-2.5rpm. Keep your tire pressure at recommended levels. Keeping your car clean=less weight=better MPG.
well it'd better be for 8 grand more, lol. Im pretty sure we would all love to have an SI, but the price difference is hard to justify, with the gas mileage it gets. Maybe one day ill have an SI, but i love my lx coupe very much, its like a little go-kart.
I agree with him on the seats pushing into your low back; while the seats might be comfortable for some, I've driven on trips in my friends civic and the seats do push in on your low back and after having low back surgery it was a pain; don't recommend this car if you have low back problems; if not, then this car is for u!
before you buy a civic. Have you considered the mini cooper? the S version costs the same as an Si, the benefits? comfortable, very reliable very good gas milage, perfect transmission, space, VERY fun to drive, and very pretty :) I'm not old enough yet but I have my eyes on the cooper or mazda mx5 miata :)

@tman4lwh07 - the leather in the civic feels like a somewhat cheaper grade of leather, but then again, you are buying a compact car, and how often are you gonna really feel that leather seats... you just sit on them... and the seats are a little stiff on the side for the thigh support but you should get used to it relatively easy.
I live in Canada and the CSX is a complete rip off I dunno why people would buy that piece of crap. Buy a civic si sedan much cheaper and same performance.

I have owned the Civic LX manual transmission, for a couple of months and have gone 2000 miles. I think the interior quality is far superior to the Corolla. I am getting 34mpg normally and 37mpg on a longer run. The two tier instruments definitely keep you focused on the importants things. A surprising advantage is the low end torque which enables me to easily go round slow corners in higher gear.s Roomy in the back . Highly recommended.
I bought the 2009 civic EXL with Navi (4 door aumatic) in polished metal metallic. I LOVE it! If you are debating on a Civic, get one. You won't regret it :o) I love the voice activated navi and blue tooth. great gas mileage, never noticed the discomfort he mentions with my lower back, but I have the leather inetior..don't know if that makes a differance? I'm 5'3 and have plenty of room, my b/f is 6ft and still has head space and isn't crammed in. heated seats/side mirrors and VSA r worth it!

I think it's quiet. The engine doesn't seem loud unless it's over 6k RPM, which is rare for most drivers. At 70 mph (about 110 km/hr), the engine runs a little over 2k RPM. It also has a nifty feature that turns the radio up slightly as speed increases. I wish it also turned the radio down when the engine is turned off, but it's no big deal.
It all depends on what you consider quite, for a car under the 20k mark i guess you could call it quite. however if you have ever driven in a real car that cost over 30k like a mercury, lincoln, or caddy you'd understand what quiet really is....cheap ass tree hugger

I seriously considered a Chevy Cobalt after seeing them under the hood and getting to work on them. Besides, the manufacturers you mentioned have plenty of mechanical and electrical problems that pop up in their vehicles, too. Google "toyota engine sludge."
I had the pre 2006 Civic model and when my lease was up took a 2009 for a test drive. It was a nice car but it felt too big. I'm a single guy and wanted something a bit tighter and more functional for an active lifestyle and this new model felt more like a family sedan than a Civic which was always Honda's smaller car. Plus, I hate that double dash. I decided on a 2009 Fit and have been extremely happy. Awesome car. Can't wait to drive it this summer!
Paid $16,400 for 09 Civic LX. The car is as described. It is very nice and attractive, no question. I drive mostly highway at 65-70 MPH and I have gotten 36MPG last 3 fillups (35 the two before that, and 32 when my wife drove it...probably in 3rd gear on the freeway)

This is a luxury version of a "econobox" - I own one....it has seat sensors, automatic belt constraint tensioner, wrap around airbags, compuer algorythim calculating your next service date, gps, abs, etc etc. You won't find this shit in an American's big box cars at that price.

The new civic Si's have the K20Z3 with 197 hp. All other models of the Civic Coupe and Sedan (DX, DX-G, EX-L, LX Coupe, SPORT Sedan) have the R18A1 engine in the North American market. This is a 1.8L I4 with 140 hp.

I like the ford focus alot better. The focus is really nice, it comes standard with mp3 input and can have sync which is awesome. And it doesnt look so gay

AGREED!...what irritates me is that people always say the corolla is cheaper...when you look at how many options are STANDARD on the civic that arent even AVAILABLE on the corolla its amazing!!!...make sure you look at what they actually come with as far as options before you ever choose the corolla over the civic

I have owned the Civic LX manual transmission, for a couple of months and have gone 2000 miles. I think the interior quality is far superior to the Corolla. I am getting 34mpg normally and 37mpg on a longer run. The two tier instruments definitely keep you focused on the importants things. A surprising advantage is the low end torque which enables me to easily go round slow corners in higher gear.s Roomy in the back . Highly recommended.

I bought the 2009 civic EXL with Navi (4 door aumatic) in polished metal metallic. I LOVE it! If you are debating on a Civic, get one. You won't regret it :o) I love the voice activated navi and blue tooth. great gas mileage, never noticed the discomfort he mentions with my lower back, but I have the leather inetior..don't know if that makes a differance? I'm 5'3 and have plenty of room, my b/f is 6ft and still has head space and isn't crammed in. heated seats/side mirrors and VSA r worth it!

I am glad that you like it i am hopefully going to be buying one in the next couple of weeks my parents are going to be paying for it but i have to pay them back, the only thing that i am going to do differently then you is to get the EXL with out the Navi because i am going to ask my grandma to get me one for christmas

agreed i drove both as well as a nissan sentrs spec-v and the si sedan is a way better car in allmost every aspect. this is the real drivers car in its own class and i think it is a better alternative to say like even a altima i mean fuck my cars got a trunk like a buik and a nice roomy back seat plus it gets fabulous gas milage and is fast and the engine sings a sweet song allmost like a jap bmw straight six. sweet car!!

I think it's quiet. The engine doesn't seem loud unless it's over 6k RPM, which is rare for most drivers. At 70 mph (about 110 km/hr), the engine runs a little over 2k RPM. It also has a nifty feature that turns the radio up slightly as speed increases. I wish it also turned the radio down when the engine is turned off, but it's no big deal.

It all depends on what you consider quite, for a car under the 20k mark i guess you could call it quite. however if you have ever driven in a real car that cost over 30k like a mercury, lincoln, or caddy you'd understand what quiet really is....cheap ass tree hugger

JD, I consider myself more of a cheap ass money hugger, but I've gotten the chance to drive and work on cars costing more than 30k (I'm not sure why you mention Mercury... even the Marquis barely breaks the 30k mark). I know what you mean, but I don't think the vast majority of people would notice the difference. If you have ever considered fast food a luxury, you might know what I mean. Besides that, I admit that I'm usually listening to loud music too often.

A decade ago, I probably would have agreed with you, but American car companies have come a very long way in a short time. I seriously considered a Chevy Cobalt after seeing them under the hood and getting to work on them. Besides, the manufacturers you mentioned have plenty of mechanical and electrical problems that pop up in their vehicles, too. Google "toyota engine sludge."

I had the pre 2006 Civic model and when my lease was up took a 2009 for a test drive. It was a nice car but it felt too big. I'm a single guy and wanted something a bit tighter and more functional for an active lifestyle and this new model felt more like a family sedan than a Civic which was always Honda's smaller car. Plus, I hate that double dash. I decided on a 2009 Fit and have been extremely happy. Awesome car. Can't wait to drive it this summer!

Paid $16,400 for 09 Civic LX. The car is as described. It is very nice and attractive, no question. I drive mostly highway at 65-70 MPH and I have gotten 36MPG last 3 fillups (35 the two before that, and 32 when my wife drove it...probably in 3rd gear on the freeway)

you know what the best car ever is? The 92 toyota corolla. You put a spoiler on it and paint it scarlet red, and it's the msot awesome race car ever (even though it's not that fast) but yeah it's an awesome car, remember, 92 corolla, get it. Corolla 92 is an excellent car, Toyota ofcourse but CoroNa is better, is the same case of compare Celeron and Pentium (Corolla and Corona), both were Intel, both were fast and good machines, but Pentium had better components and quality, the same case as Corona

LOL...this "ecnobox" isn't a typical North American econobox. This is a luxury version of a "econobox" - I own one....it has seat sensors, automatic belt constraint tensioner, wrap around airbags, compuer algorythim calculating your next service date, gps, abs, etc etc. You won't find this shit in an American's big box cars at that price.
