Yes - a 3D blood layer was match-moved to the face. The blood actually on the face was not made with real-flow, only the blood coming out in the initial hit. A lot of work was done in comp (tons of warping) to conform the blood to his face, neck and shirt.
Thanks, glad you like it! This was a challenging one. There were a few talented artists working on this shot together. From what I recall, it was a combo of realflow and painted texture/comp work on the shirt and face.
