  • @PJMAN2952 use gtkpod it works with any ipod

  • could you tell me the link where to unload him?

  • Another idiot that won't speak the fuck up.

  • I have Windows 7 64bit, will I be able to run it?

  • @STAT3039 naw.. on 32bit......portableubuntu(dot)sf(dot)net it tells you it is a 32bit prject....(also contains download)

  • @crsmelee kk thanks

  • a question... its no work on W7 64 bit?? thks

  • @walrusmx Not yet

  • interesting

  • I rather use proper ubuntu

  • ubuntu alone is wayyy faster than any windows version. My laptom loads in about 10-20 secs, never need an antivirus, almost never got an error. Windows is not bad, but its over rated

  • @middimar Good luck watching a video with best quality or getting wifi working.

  • @middimar windows no bad? is complete shit for which people pay!

  • Long way short..... 1.download the file 2.extract 3.go to the folder you have extracted and find a file that says run_portable_ubuntu (should have a batch logo and end with .bat) 4.then drag it in the open command you have there.

    WALLA IT WORKS!!!!!! ::D

  • i have 32 bit but im steel getting a error

  • Did you MD5 test the file you downloaded?

  • I'd prefer just to use proper Ubuntu.

  • hmm ppl are are getting errors do you have 64 bit windows??

  • ya i cant load it to =[

  • I get the following message when trying to run portable Ubuntu:

Windows cannot find 'trayrun.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search.

  • same here

  • Someone please ffs help me with this. I do exactly what the how to says and all I get is the cmd just closing on me. Doesn't load anything, just closes and nothing happens. I'm running Vista x64 Ultimate.

  • It's currently 32-bit only.

  • This video is really good! I love youtube and how it always inspires me to keep watching more! haha it's true (= entertaining stuff when i'm AT WORK!

  • Eh, maybe so you can use programs (some of which won't exist on both platforms) in both OSes simultaneously, without having to reboot?

    Maybe to develop cross-platform software?

Just because it's not useful for you doesn't mean it's useless, you fool.

  • lmao..

cygwin.. virtualization(vmware, xen, etc).. doing it in more than one machine.. nah.. better do it in a ubuntuxi running on windows.. omfg..

anyways, tuxis doing crap all the time..

as i said, spent your time in usefull projects, not in "maybe i'll find a use for this" project ;D

  • i cant change or add anything because it wants a password, but i have not set up a password! any ideas of what it is or how to fix it?

  • if you didn't set up a password then there isn't one...

  • The password for the pubuntu user should be 123456

  • this is one reason ubuntu is so great - beyond dual booting, live cds, even more than the impressive install through windows option - here we have what looks like a virtual & portable linux

    thanks for the news lifehacker

  • thanks for the info .i just visited your website.

  • i have been having problems with the portable edition, cant get that icon to disappear even with all the methods i used, slow down when loading up the container file i use is only 4gb when I am using an 8gb TD, it is not recognizing my cd drive only until i open it then close it does it recognize, and doesn't allow mounting of any other partitions on my drive, annoying as hell, newer version of wine buggy as hell to

  • How does this work? Is it just a virtualized Ubuntu-System, using Desktop-Integration, like VirtualBox? If so, isnt this slow?

Or does it use UmlWin32 or something?

  • its based on colinux, basically it installs a load of kernel mode drivers into windows then uses the colinux kernel to run alongside the windows kernel. This is why i argue that its not truly portable.

  • the only way to have a truly portable linux is to either boot off a live cd or flash drive distro. Or run virtually off a cd or flash drive (using something like VHD), however, because you have to have VM software installed the later cant be considered portable until VM's become standard in windows operating systems and/or indeed in other operating systems.

  • What is the root super user password?

  • interesting.. but what's the point?

  • having linux on windows

  • Why doesn't this fucking work in 7 or vista 64-bit?

    Lifehacker uses 32-bit?

  • what should I exactly type under the coammand line? newby and windows 7 user

  • so lets say you already extracted the folder to the desktop.

    type this:

cd [system drive such as C] \Users\ [your username] \ Desktop\run_portable_ubuntu.bat

    (without spaces)

  • How is this portable????? you have to be logged in as admin and it alters your windows installation..... sorry not truly portable

....and unlikely to be unless MS makes VMs default in all future versions of windows via hyper-v or virtual pc

  • doesnt alter windows installation,\

and it runs inside windows, you dont dual boot

  • Yes it does! its only an extension of the colinux project , all the networking support etc is through virtual drivers which are windows kernel mode drivers installed into the installation of windows, therefore, altering the installation of windows on the machine! its not portable!

  • Ok, well, then it's not portable. Still its a nice thing to have.

  • doesn't work on windows 7 64bit :/

  • Can you go on a malicious site, without affecting the Windows OS?

  • Yes. Malicious sites won't work on Linux and therefore can't affect the Windows OS as well.

  • I would say "depends". We are not sure what kind of vulnerability a site will try to exploit.

In general, if you know a site is malicious, it is best to steer clear.

  • that's awesome!

    thanks!

  • that is a great release

  • hurr i cna't get mine to start... oh well i'm too lazy

  • First I've heard of this, very nice.

    Good video man.
