@DjRed3394 It shouldnt make too much difference if you work a little harder at it. I play this on a single horn and i think it sounds as good as on a double, It's just maybe a little harder to get the higher ranges. Depends on your single horn too i guess, What Horn do you play?
@Marsuvees1298 I'd have to dissagree. With a little extra practice and a decent built Single Horn, you should be able to create a clear, true sound throughout the ranges.
@danielwills93 Well, obviously a professional on a single horn is going to sound better than an amateur on a double! I am merely speaking of the natural tuning of the instrument. I can play throughout all ranges of the horn with fantastic tuning and tone only using the F side of the horn, but I don't... Why make yourself jump through more hoops than you need to?
There are reasons people chose a single horn over a double, and I really can't argue. It all comes down to preference either way.
Oh and btw this could easily come from someone holding the hand against the back of the bell. This sounds almost like an 8D - very brassy. Unfortunately, this player doesn't seem able to control the variation in tone produced by a larger-bored instrument.
@chubbis2 - And - I'm sure you have recorded this? I'd be interested to hear your "perfect" rendition of this. Please post your performance of this so we can learn from your knowledge...
Oh shut up with this argument already. You can criticize the rendition of a piece without being able to play the instrument, just as you can criticize a painting without being talented enough to paint, or criticize a book without being able to write one yourself. And each person has different tastes. I think the hornist played this too fast. Doesn't mean I have to hate on everyone that likes this rendition, does it ? Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Wow, the vibrato. Wow the Rubato ad lib. And holy crap they must be playing on a conn or something, cause that high A-flat is a little overboard. It sounds good to an audience though, which is what is important. I would just tone it down a bit. Then again, it is Romantic music, so... meh.
To approach this tone: Medium-large to large throated belled horn; straight right hand against back of bell, bell quite open off to your side, Good air support, and practice. Notice that the tone is clear and not muffled. Cupped right hand closing most of the bell gives you a muffled sound.
@Lorenzo8D I disagree, not to mention that part of the reason for *not* playing like that is the fact that the accomplished player can adjust the position of their hand to make sure that every note is in tune. The horn is not meant to sound bright and brassy like other brass, it's meant to sound like a horn. There's no way this sound came from someone holding their hand back against the bell. There's a roundness to the sound that you just wouldn't get by doing what you're talking about.
I've been trying to get that tone quality for so long!!! Anyways, you can download the score for this piece by going to "imslp.org/wiki/Nocturno,_Op.7_%28Strauss,_Franz%29"

I am going to play this solo maybe when im in 8th grade. It sounds really wonderful my instructor told me i have to practice my high As and my Dflat scale (which i know) well this solo is really exceptionally great.
@Moonmatt2 it does not sound like the emotion he wanted in my opinion but also it is most likely the computer generated version so we wont be able to hear the quality that he wanted unless an actual person who has emotion and knows how to work the emotion of the piece plays it
I think he is not saying it lack of emotion, but it lack of the emotion Strauss wanted. I personnaly think it is way too fast, and I agree with Moonmatt2.
I am not saying that this is a computer generated version, i was just saying it could be, but whether it is or not I realize that this does have some good emotion and that part is good, but if it is a human version we can always strive to be better and try to pass our limits, overall this is very nicely put together piece

@danielwills93 But some notes do sound much clearer and more in tune on the Bb side of the instrument.
