  • Ooo, a new Carlin book!

I just bought one from Azrienoch (on YT) in his book auction. Now I have to find time to read it. I wish I could read at work, there is nothing else to do there. ;)

  • So the new school is more quiet than the last one?

Hey, that means you'll have time to vlog some more, right?

    :-D

  • Yeah, it only has one third the number of books, the kids only check out 2 instead of three, and some classes only come every other week. 4 classes haven't come at all. Quite boring after the full schedule I've had for 8 years. And LOL I'd love to vlog, but my library is like being in a fish bowl. Someone walks by and stares at me every 2 minutes. I'll have to find a corner to hide in or something. :)

  • That is a lame package for MTM Show for sure!

The Matt Shepard book i have not heard of.Thanks for the news!

  • Man, this was awesome. You could talk about a rock, and I would be glued to the interwebz.

  • Actually, that's not a bad video idea. Maybe we could do that as a collab?

    LOL

    ;-)

    Thanks, Steve

  • Wow - a new Anne Rice book is on the way! Cool!

  • One thing I wasn't able to find out as I was clicking about on the web was whether these book release dates are international. I would think that something like an Anne Rice book would be worldwide, but I still have yet to find out for sure.

  • I'll do some checking myself too.

    Cheers Curt!

  • I love MTM!!!

  • She turns my DVD player on with her smile!

  • ok..book and dvd...now i get the title. at first i was trying to put them together in my head and going huh....and no chuckles til season 6? that bites

  • There was no way to fit anything but there names in the title, lol.

And nice pun, btw. It actually took a full minute for me to get it (slow much, Curt?).

  • lol...slow is my new middle name! i'm with ya bro!

  • If only my days were 48 hours long and I wouldn't have to sleep... Would I ever get to do and see everything I want to?

  • That would be nice, wouldn't it.

    :-)

  • people just dont like to talk about such things.... its a shame

  • I know.

Unless we acknowledge how badly Mary Tyler Moore looks when the film is allowed to turn yellow, we will not move forward as a society.

  • where is the publicity is right.

i really enjoyed those shows. they were cutting edge tv humour for their time.

  • Yep, and they still hold up (IMO). Although references to Watergate and Nixon might be confusing to some folks.

    :-)

  • I was just thinking the same thing...where was the press junket for that...Larry King etc. Hadn't about the til this vid. Imagine that?

Nice dvd review as well. : )

  • Thanks, Alesha.

Apparently Judy Shepard's done a few TV talk show appearances (and if she shows up in town for a book signing, I plan on going) but yep... pretty minimal from what I can tell.

  • thanks for the information about the book!

  • Glad to share!

  • How couldTed EVER look jaundice with those ties! ;)

  • Even a few of his red ties turned orange. It's like magic for the lazy!

  • I'm very, very surprised there was no publicity or coverage on the release of the book... so odd.

    Cheers my friend... J.

  • It came and went before many of us knew about it. Hudson Street Press must have expected the book to sell itself - ??

  • thank you

  • I have to wonder if someday instead of DVD's they'll start simply putting everything on memory cards with some sort of super duper fantastico compression algorithm and instead of dvd players they'll be stand alone memory card based players. And then of course many DVD owners will go out and buy the new memory cards:))) They would take up a lot less space. Of course there would be packaging to take up space. It probably only costs them a buck to press a DVD though, so it might be a while.

  • It all comes down to cost, yep! If I remember the story of Beta vs. VHS correctly it was a similar issue to that which determined VHS the winner.... (suddenly not sure if that was how the story went)... but as long as there's a way to transfer what I have on DVD to the new medium without giving them MORE of my money, I won't mind. I was able to survive the CD/MP3 conversion w/o extra cost.

    (SUCK IT, RIAA!!!!)

  • hi curt!

    come visit us :)

  • Some day soon, I hope!

    :-D

  • Tried to comment...

well anyway faved five etc etc

  • Thanks, Pappy!

    :-)

  • aaargh! the comment section...

let's just say I watched, rated it 5* and tried to comment but it went somewhere else!

  • Thanks, JR - yesterday I began replying to the comments as they appeared, watching in amazement as we all made them disappear one by one.

    Gotta larf!

Hope the new gig is going well!

  • I rode the bus with Georgia Engel once. Valerie Harper was not there.

  • Of course not - she had her own bus by then.

  • OOoooh...a new Anne Rice! :-)

  • I was curious and looked up her name to see how many book she's written - talk about keeping busy at the typewriter!

    :-)

  • The drawbacks of cut and paste - or using an old template. You are getting very good at this.

Re the book - I cannot fathom the emotional roller coaster that she must have gone thru in writing it. Too bad it wasn't published by a bigger house - it may have received more press.

  • I read the fan message boards and people are lit on fire over the cut-n-paste blunder with the cast list. LOL

The theme song for Fox should now go, "who can piss the world off with their mistakes..."

    ;-)~

As for Judy Shepard, I'm guessing it HAD to be one hell of a hard thing to get through. In fact, the passages describing Matthew's attack are so detailed, I almost hope a ghost writer took over those duties.

  • This is officially the gayest video I've ever seen. ;-)

  • kinda sheltered huh?

  • Nah. But VERY sarcastic. Especially with my friends :-)

  • You mean I didn't need to display the rainbow pride flag to reach that level?

    W0000T!!

  • Noooooooooooo! She totally rocked!

*faints in a pile of dramatic sympathy tears for Rhoda*

  • Some things are enjoyable reading. Some things are important reading. When you find a book that has elements of each, it's a great recommendation.

Unbelievable the lack of respect in just tossing out Season 5 of MTM without color correction or decent packaging.

    New George Carlin book? Cool!

  • I think if the first couple season releases hadn't looked so terrific, I might not have noticed the picture flaws too much. But as long as the episodes are complete...

Shout Factory just announced season 2 of "Rhoda" coming in January - there's a discussion board already filled with people asking if this set will be as messed up as the S1 set was.

And, yes, I'm one of those people.

    :-)

Carlin had "mostly finished" the book before his death.. it'ill be interesting to see how it reads.

  • Being from wyoming the Mathew Sheppard thing was quite memoralble. Before that most people thought gays were only in San Fransico. Its sad that someone has to die to awake a society on a major issue.

  • She talked about that at various points in the book. Apparently there was a lot of backlash against the entire state because of it that inspired locals to join in the memorials and vigils, etc.

  • well about that, the state has implemented requirements at the educational level to talk about bullying discrimination in High Schools now.

  • for a state that is as conservative as Wyoming this issue has become a Strong point, the shepard issue has cause a lot of people to rethink how others should be treated. Its a good thing.

  • I miss you curt !!

    : )

    **Kisses**

  • (((Sonia)))

I hope all is going okay with you these days.

    :-)

  • Great reviews i hate when they give cut down episodes as well it makes me think why put it out at all except for the casese where that footage has been lost. The worst dvd case in a long time is the last 2 seasons of the simpsons that have came out they make you scratch the dvd to get it out.

  • I couldn't believe how crappy the packaging for Simpsons S11 was. Not sure I'm going to bother with S12, although if it gets marked down to 50% off, I might consider it.

  • You have to put the disc's in something else that's what i did.Did you hear they are putting out season 20 in december then 13 next year they are going to confuse all kinds of ppl.

  • Yep, I did the same thing. Found paper sleeve inserts to protect the disc - they caused the glue holding some of the cardboard together to separate.

    I LOL'd.

Season 20... feh. I stopped watching during season 18 since it stopped making me laugh somewhere around season 16. I say kill the damn thing already.

  • There's still a few good a season i think they need to do the british way and cut the number of episodes down to 12 or so and write good stories like the old days instead of trying to keep up with family guys pace.I think they have one more year after this on contract i would say that will be the last.

  • Yep, it's the "less is more" approach that has served a lot of great British series and cables series well. I was just having this convo with someone last week about how awful certain episodes of Will & Grace were - season six especially - and how if they had just done 10 or 12 instead of the standard 24 then maybe it wouldn't have been painful to sit through several of those episodes.

How long was that last sentence anyway? Good grief!

    Sorry.

    ;-P

  • I heard about that book and really want to read it! Have fun with Mary! I saw Queer as Folk at B&N the other day and yeah, it's expensive like you said! The LWord is what I'm waiting for this month!

  • As flawed as the set is, I'm glad to finally have complete versions of all these episodes.

And believe it or not, I still have not seen The L Word at all.

    *ducks*

    :-)

  • Interesting combination of topics Curt, do you own stock in Amazon?

  • No, I just have a big appreciation for both items on the discussion list here.

  • What...a new Anne Rice Book...Awesome I love her stuff thanks.

  • Happy to share. There are several well known authors with new material coming out. Even a Kurt Vonnegut release is scheduled within the next couple months.

  • You're getting good at this reviewing lark. Soembody ought to snap you up & give you a slot on a TV, or radio show :)

  • Thanks, Andy. I'm less pleased with how this turned out than the previous one but I think it means I need to shake it up a bit, who knows. It's fun but so far I'm not 100% satisfied with how these are turning out.

  • I have the Mary Tyler Moore Show on VHS, now I am getting them on DVD. I am sure once I get those, they will be on something else. My ex-girlfiend was an aerobics instructor and when Mary was in Dallas, she took her class. One degree of separation. LOL

  • [suddenly extra glad I got to touch Van back in August!]

I wonder what the next format will be. Perhaps everything will be just a file for downloading... then the file formats will change... then instead of downloading, we'll telepathically absorb the information... !!

  • [Insert blathering opinion, small editorial, unnecessary historical self-reference and attempts at wit here] Hi Curt! :o)

  • HA! I think I'll copy that and paste it as my own comment everywhere I go - would save time, I think.

    ;-)

  • I'm loving these reviews! Woot @ Curt!

  • HA! Thanks, Lisa. Every time I've done this, it kills off subscribers but I figure it's just a matter of "thinning the herd" as it were.

    ;-P

  • I just got the e-mail this morning that it's waiting for me at the library :)

You need a haircut... I would have said hairscut... but you dont't have that many to spare... BOOYAAA!

  • How about I fly out there and shave your head after I'm done shaving mine?

It won't be any problem at all - I'll just show up while you're still asleep. You won't feel a thing.

    >8-)

  • Isn't that what most your lovers say??? "I didn't feel a thing"

    ***Buffing Nails***

  • Just for that, I'm replying to this comment just to make it go away.

    BOOYAAAH!

  • YEA FOR MTM!!! Ted cracks me up.

    George's memoir sounds good

  • I was shocked at the Carlin book announcement - happily so. He's written other stuff but an actual memoir from that guy kinda makes me salivate.

    W00T!

  • Didn't know the book was out either, but would like to read it. Her story is every parent's nightmare.

"Chuckles Bites the Dust" was one of the best in MTM's long run.

  • I don't have kids (feline companions aside), so I think it was easier for me to get through this book than it would be for anyone who is a parent. And she doesn't take the melodramatic route on this at all, which just made it easier for me to get drawn in. If every other page had a sad violin playing between the lines I might have given up, who knows.

  • the mTm show had THE best ensemble cast. Those who were lucky enough to watch them when originally broadcast will remember each and every character from Ted Baxter to Sue Ann Nivens.

Matthew Shepard will not be forgotten either. :(

  • Not many shows could withstand the loss of major characters and keep the momentum going. With the MTM show the transitions were pretty much seemless and it just kept getting better.

    That's rare!

The Shepard story appears to still resonate with people all this time later. I still remember reading the news paper articles as if it were last week.

  • I wish I had your time!

  • No you don't. Job hunting is the motherfucking pits from hell.

  • Ooh, yes, I agree. How is it going?

  • It's like staring into a dry lake some days, but I've had a few leads here and there that might pay off in time.

    Thanks for asking.

    :-)

  • Well, a wise friend once told me: "Love is all around no need to waste it....you can have the town why don't you take it.... you might just make it after all!"

  • if it were up to me, you could run the paley center for media....just sayin' ; )

  • I would gladly take that gig!

    :-D

  • I saw an article the other day that says that McKinney was interviewed for 10 hours in which he revealed "As far as Matt is concerned, I dont have any remorse,"

"The night I did it, I did have hatred for homosexuals," he is quoted as saying. He goes on to say that he still dislikes gays and that his perceptions about Shepards sex life bolstered his belief that the killing was justified. His only regret seems to be that he let his father down. They should keep him locked up forever!

  • Can't really comment On MTM because I don't remember the show, or even if it was shown here. And of course, I'm also FAR too young! ;-)

  • McKinney was, is, and will always be a complete fucking mess. The only reason he's spending consecutive life sentences is because even his lawyers knew damn well that if it had gone to trial, he'd have gotten the death penatly.

Death would've been too good for him. Better that he and his cohort both sit and rot.

Here's to being young and free!

    :-)

  • I remember watching Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke - didnt know she did anything after that!

  • I would love to come to your house and you make me watch all of the DVD collections you have I love the sitcoms, did you ever like Golden Girls that is my all time favorite, oh and Maude, Im a Bea Arthur fan,?

  • I miss you on twitter. sure, I sub, but I liked chilling with you in a less Tubey environment. Tweet again brother, I appreciated it... Just my 7 cents.

  • Thanks, I appreciate that.

Twitter got to be too much though. Had to give it up.

  • So... when are you going to make good on your commitments?

  • At first I read this and thought, "did I propose while drunk again?" Then I remembered that I don't get drunk.

Then I remembered what you're talking about.

Yeah, that's still in the works but I'm waiting for clips from two more people; only have one out of the three so far.

    :-)

  • But will you read Miley Cyrus' book? She wrote one, you know.

  • Curt thanks for the reviews. I think I'll pick up a copy of The Meaning of Matthew. I'm an admirer of Judy Shepard and the activist work that she does. Matthew's story is such a tragic one and I can't even imagine what the parents went through. Now, you are making me want to run out and buy Mary Tyler Moore DVD's you naughty boy. LOL Perhaps you should just have streaming parties for all of us! Hey, you're getting damn good at this video making. Maybe there is a career in there somewhere? -Jim

  • Thanks, Jim. I say wait until you find a really good sale price on the MTM discs. It's so bare bones that to pay full price might make the baby Jesus AND your wallet both cry.

  • Hi, Curt--

In my opinion, so much has been said in 11 years about Matt's murder, by so many people, his mother must have wondered what she could really add to make a real difference. The fact that the book is out at all is a strong statement in itself: "This is who Matt was, and this was my life with him-- deal with it".

Which is not to say that it was easy; when my brother died of cancer, it took me a solid year to scrape up how I felt and write about him. It never goes away, y'know?

  • Henrik, I don't blame you. Some folks take even longer, so kudos to you for getting that far in that much time.

She even talked about the TV movie that was made about him and their family. She did want to set the record straight on several points, though, since even the movie altered some important details.

  • Movies ALWAYS do that. It's part of the moneyholic thing.

I posted my story about Marc on my RedBubble, deviantArt, and Goodreads accounts. Want links?

  • Sure, which ever one of those sites is easiest to get to, though you'll have to do it in a pvt msg I think. Links were filtered or blocked automatically as spam in comments last I checked.

  • some good recommendations. i had no idea that matthew's mother actually wrote a book about her son and his life. sounds like a definite good read - albeit maybe a bit sad.

  • It was a lot less sad than I expected it to be, actually. I figured I'd be bawling every other page but it wasn't the case. Perhaps I was expecting something melodramatic, who knows.

But I finished the whole thing in half a day, so... yeah, I'd call this a good read.

    :-)

  • Loved the "Mary Style" Thanks for Watching. It's all in the details. I agree about the packaging. What were they thinking?

  • thanks for the book rec. i thought i tuned-in but i hadn't heard about that book; i'll check it out.

have you read "prayers for bobby"? also a mother writing about the death (suicide in this case) of her gay son and how it changed their family. stories like these always spin me through depression then hope. i'm glad they're being told.

  • Never heard of Shepard, I am going to have to wait a while for MTM S5.

  • Thanks for another great book review! :)

I always find it amazing how people can write books or write screenplays about anything that deals with murder , especially when the story line is based on truth. I imagine it's gotta be absolute torture for the family of the victims to live through all their pain and grief again.

  • I'm making comments disappear by replying to them again, but hopefully you'll get to read this...

Yeah, the passages where his attack are described in vivid detail blew me away - and I even wondered if perhaps someone else pulled "ghostwriting" duties to complete that section for her - but her inclusion of that passage seemed to be for the sake of letting the reader know just how much damage that brand of hatred and bigotry can inflict.

  • Thanks for the book recommendation.

As for DVD's, I am happy that "The Patty Duke" show will be released. Yayy!!!

    -- Matt

  • I heard about that one. Yeah, a bunch of the older titles from that era are finally getting a release, tho I've heard mixed opinions of Shout! Factory's job with the "Mr. Ed" set.

  • Thanks for the book recommendation!

  • Always happy to share.

BTW, I finally figured out how to work the green screen effect. I even shouted "Hooray!" when I got it to work.

    *Thanks again*

    :-)

  • Great review!

  • Thanks

(I'm making comments disappear by replying to them... kind of a fun new game!)

  • Can't believe Matthew Shepard died 11 years ago. Around the time he was killed, I saw Elton John in concert at Madison Square Garden. He dedicated "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" to him, it was so beautiful and perfect tribute.

  • Elton even got a mention in the book, now that you mention it. I think she brought that particular tribute up in the section where she talks about their family's reaction to the media coverage.

  • Not surprised she talked about Elton. Since he was a big activist for what happened. Though that is so cool she might have mentioned the concert I went to.

  • The book about Matthew was all over the morning talk shows last month - the view and so on. The mother spoke well and with heartfelt emotion about her loss, his life and the book. Anne Rice has gotten too religious for me lately. The last few books (since Stan died) I had to force myself to finish. Carlin I'll look for. Good stuff Curt.

  • Ah, there ya go.. this is why I didn't know about it. The View gives me a headache.

The Carlin book surprised me, but seems he had mostly completed it before passing away. Someone else had to come in and wrap things up, so we'll see. I plan on getting it too.

    :-)

  • Thanks for the review! Judy is truely a brave woman for getting her sons story out there! I applaud her for being so brave.

  • What had to be painful was recounting the details of his attack. I can't imagine...

  • I was going to get that MTM set...that is until I saw how flimsy the plastic is! How could they?!

  • LOL, I say go for it anyway. If it will spend most of its time on a shelf sandwiched by other stuff, it can't be harmed too badly.

  • Curt, You're HARDCORE....You've taken the PLUNGE....You're a great Critic/Reviewer/Promoter.

  • Thanks, Ronnie. Probably should have gone a little "deeper" with the Shepard book, but the video would've been too long.

  • Great review!! I love me some MTM!!..

  • Thanks.

Mary rules the planet. All must bow to her.

    YAY!
