Singapore's progress is not unique. The countries in East Asia all made tremendous progress eg Japan, South Korea, Taiwan & Hong Kong. China after the demise of the great helmsman too made tremendous progress in just 30 years.
As a Singaporean, I look up to with utmost respect..the change in Singapore is so significant that nobody can deny, however, it is my opinion that he has great insights, but may not be able to lead so lead on a larger scale platform as Singaporeans are generally "law-abiding" were he to lead the UN, I'm afraid that many would question him. Nonetheless, he IS the father of Singapore, and I fear the day when the new generation takes over, a generation which may not be as capable as he.

politics should not be used to gain business advantages. unfortunately, from what i can see, there is a blatant misdealing in this aspect in Singapore. several large pseudo-private firms in Singapore are headed by key political parties or their family members, who are clearly incompetent judging by the losses, yet able to retain their positions. also the fact that these companies are often given huge funding (as mentioned by bremneshatten) with no accountability to the public.

1. Lee owns a PRIVATE company called the "Singapore Government Investment Corporation" which uses PUBLIC taxpayers money. No accountability to parliament, no questions allowed. Where do the profits go?
2. Lee made his son the Prime Minister.
3. This same son is also Minister for Finance, who in turn gives daddy Sing$100b to play with in private company (see point 1)
1. Lee doesn't OWN GIC, He is merely the chairman of the sovereign fund. The profit of the company goes back to GIC which also translate to Singapore.
2. Lee doesn't make his son the PM, SM Goh was his appointment.
3. Again I will like to highlight that the money that GIC used is for investment purposes to improve the state reserve.

The shareholders of GIC is Singapore. The profits goes back to Singapore. That's the reason it is call a Sovereign Wealth fund. It's main purpose is to mange SIngapore foreign reserve. MM Lee is merely an employee/ adviser of the company and he doesn't hold any shares of the company.

politics should not be used to gain business advantages. unfortunately, from what i can see, there is a blatant misdealing in this aspect in Singapore. several large pseudo-private firms in Singapore are headed by key political parties or their family members, who are clearly incompetent judging by the losses, yet able to retain their positions. also the fact that these companies are often given huge funding (as mentioned by bremneshatten) with no accountability to the public.

President Bush is a mayor stock holder in oil companies so was Dick Cheney.they just lie about it and try to get the attention away from the facts..
Singapore has better healthcare and schools then over 90% of the western world and the highest average income of all of Asia and nr12 in the world. Singapore is the best!!

Lee is not a stateman. His political stance has done the following in Singapore:
1. Lee owns a PRIVATE company called the "Singapore Government Investment Corporation" which uses PUBLIC taxpayers money. No accountability to parliament, no questions allowed. Where do the profits go?
2. Lee made his son the Prime Minister.
3. This same son is also Minister for Finance, who in turn gives daddy Sing$100b to play with in private company (see point 1)
4. The son's wife controls Temasek Holdings.

I am sorry I think you didn't get ur facts right.
1. Lee doesn't OWN GIC, He is merely the chairman of the sovereign fund. The profit of the company goes back to GIC which also translate to Singapore.
2. Lee doesn't make his son the PM, SM Goh was his appointment.
3. Again I will like to highlight that the money that GIC used is for investment purposes to improve the state reserve.
In a nutshell, they control the company because they have the brain to do it well

Private companies make profits for its shareholders. I guess LKY is a shareholder! Not sure about the people of Singapore.

The shareholders of GIC is Singapore. The profits goes back to Singapore. That's the reason it is call a Sovereign Wealth fund. It's main purpose is to mange SIngapore foreign reserve. MM Lee is merely an employee/ adviser of the company and he doesn't hold any shares of the company.
Once again you state that you "guess" that MM Lee is a shareholder, apparently this is not a fact. I hope this enlighten you :)

Shouldn't it be accountable to parliament. This is the only civilised course of action.

It is much easier for the rich and wealthy to migrate to Australia. That is a fact. The same way it is easier for a degree holder to migrate to Australia.

A lawyer with a PhD fm Harvard can stand up well to any challenges, he need not fear a chef fm Shanghai except of course in the kitchen.
