Although I play the saxophone I think Gene was the kind of musician that made you leave all the things you were doing and start Dancing or "Air Drumming " and that my friend is a very rare skill nowadays.
'Wire Brush Stomp'.Wonderful.Talk to any drummer who knows his stuff and he will quickly show his admiration for the greatest of them all,Gene Krupa. He just had that extra special something that you cannot quantify.Maybe thats the way it should be.Show the man some respect and cut the crap.Only a fellow drummer knows just what Gene was about and I have been drumming for nearly 40 years.I listen to jazz constantly also!!!
Great fun and isn't that Bob Hope propping up the dialogue? I like the idea of a simple brushes beat getting a whole street dancing. Kind of 1939 style drum'n'bass. Gene was the great communicator, selling the whole concept of the drummer as the pulse of popular music.
Gene is amazing! You can tell he puts so much feeling into his playing! That's why he was so successful, because he loved what he did and he was a showman which are very admirable traits in my book!
Safagan, if you play drums you must respect Krupa. Every Drummer alive does. Sure at times he played heavy but he continued the traditon from Dodds and Webb. Buddy and Elvin loved him. Thats enough for me
A drummer can have all the technique in the world. Gene had a soul that made you want to get up and dance and feel great. Today's drummers may have technique. But, most of them are still searching for their soul. Or, too stupid to know they have one.
@genemz Gene....you nailed it! You expressed the pearl of great price. Inner soul coming out as Gene played on his drums. Thank you so much for your wise comment. Toss out 50% of my technique and give me 10% of Gene's soul and I am a winner. Obviously I have to search for my own inner beat....and that's what I'm doing, watching many Gene Krupa videos. I did talk to Gene twice as a kid. I'm so grateful for that! Gene will always live within drummers with universal soul. John-Hans Melcher

gene sucks! Hes an asshole, Have you ever heard any of todays jazz drummers? They are alot better, And you are what you listen to, and you definatly dont wanna be playing at genes level.
Great to see Gene 'dancing' on the snare drum with those brushes in this incredibly historic clip. Reminds me a bit of Big Sid Catlett. Actually re: Buddy Rich, he could be a very charming, warm and funny guy.He just got a bit ratty with a bad back after 50 years in showbiz - not surprising really.
Every drummer has his/her own flavours and skills gene can do things buddy cant do, and buddy can do things gene cant do. The sooner people realise the more healthy we will be.
I have been playing drums for 25 years you cocksuker! Let me guess, you think Travis Barker or Joey Jordison are drum gods and you practice your quads on the double bass all day.
If you think Gene sucks then you have no taste, ear or real training in music.
Even if so, that doesn't mean they sucked in their own day... just as movie directors have some extra skills today, but that doesn't mean that old movies suck. You're an idiot.
A deeply felt kiss and embrace is far more satisfying than the antics of a sexual athlete. Gene was sharing his love for the music, and the people responded back in kind. Buddy was mostly sharing his love of self. Musicians loved playing with Gene. Musicians would have loved to punch Buddy in the nose. Yet, undoubtedly, Buddy was greater as an athlete. Gene understood how to satisfy the soul.
People were at home with Gene. Buddy was highly disliked as a person, by many.
I agree with you, in some way. Both of them were masters, but Rich was a sort of a drum-monster. I would have to admit that he was better than Gene, but I prefer this last. Krupa, in my opinion, inspite having less technichal resources, played the drums with his own sound plenty of swing, and his way of playing was very important for the drummers of his time.

buddy rich is the master

Not in the opinion of people with ears he's not!

Dear miklabret,
Buddy Rich was technically faster, although Gene had the groove. Correction: Gene Krupa is the master.

Krupa was the first ever famous drummer and developed the drum kit.
Krupa admitted himself that Buddy Rich was the better drummer, especially in battles.
Remember, Krupa became the first visible drummer and opened the door for others like Buddy to step up and be noticed.
In my opinion Gene has much better phrasing that Buddy.
