The only thing I could say, I got the Drift HD 170 Stealth, velcroed to the side of my helmet. I already went 110 mph with it on and it didn't fly off. I also didn't have issues with corrupted files like billmaa had, and I use a low end SD card.
Drift HD is good - in all ways, but need good editing hand also. A friend of mine bought the ultrasmall XD product and is utterly happy with it. But getting that thing to europe for a reasonable price is impossible. So again, no go for eurovlogggers. And I´ll have to stick to my wide angle VADO HD...
I've been running these same issues in my head for several months now. Thanks in part to your video, I finally decided to just quit worrying and order the Drift HD.
My reasons were:
size
external mic available from the dealer
aircraft intercom path cable available
standard tripod mount
I know the drift has color issues, WebBike World did an excellent comparison of several cameras that shows the problems. I'm hoping that Drift will improve the color issues with firmware update.
A cool new feature also on the New Drift is the DriftHD LED Cable (Only fits new DriftHD) DLDC. So you can see you're recording.
And the new DriftHD 2.5mm to 3.5mm Adapter Cable (Only fits new DriftHD) DADC. So now you don't have to wait for their mic to come out. you can buy your own mic...
I can't wait to get some funds saved up and get the new Drift HD...
The silicone rear cover is REALLY grippy, it really wouldn't blow off. Also, they supply a permanent sticky mount which is stronger than those i've seen by contour or go pro, there's no risk of your drift going flying down the road. The rear cover is really waterproof too :)
if you had some money to play with, i would go for the contour hd plus. it has an external mic jack, and from what i understand, you can use your I- phone/I-pod as the view finder. and soon you will be able to use android phones for it. just something to consider, altho if you are on a budget, id go with the drift stealth, right now there $170 on amazon. (im thinking of picking one up myself.)
Proud Tester of the ReplayXD here.. Yup they are new to the game and have been swamped.. It is set up for external mic. that as we speak is going into production... I will be putting up a full blown non-biased review once thing are squared away.
i agree on the drifts, with the new drift HD i got, i wouldn't recommend anyone buy one just yet until they get ALL accessories out, as for the mounting i agree totally, they need to make a more solid mount in case like you say you hit a branch just for piece of mind that it won't tear off, im throwing together a safety harness on mine to be on the safe side because the last thing i want is for the camera to fly off
My favorite is also the vio pov. Lots of mounting options and water proof. It isn't perfect and rather expensive but peronally the best option for the recordings I make while riding.
The drift has mounts that stick directly to the helmet with no velcro in between. The rubber shoe does not come off in high speeds. it is very solid. i have had no issues with my drift.
@13RuffRyder That is Iffy at best... The Drift is OK at best all around.... Sometimes you roll the dice that it corrupt a file or not record... Believe me I own all the Cameras he mentioned.
@Drapheus I want to be able to use it in the rain or in offroad conditions where its likely to get wet. To use the GoPro HD 2 with a mic you have to use a case with a huge hole in the side. I'm also not holding my breath while waiting on anything GoPro promises. They promised a wireless mic for a long time and then finally stopped mentioning it.
@kryten i think the best choice for what you want would be the"vio pov hd ". its got an external mic, its water proof and dust proof, you can record for 6+ hours straight and had a remote. its really the only camera made for moto vloging. heres a clip of a review of the camera by svengali. /watch?v=BfPDg5b2Hoo&feature=channel_video_title
kryten! Hey according to some other vlogger that got pulled over by cops... if you attach things to your helmet, it's illegal or something. Might want to check into that first :D
@op3l Depends on where you are and how retarded law enforcement is. I think that person was in Oregon which from what I've seen has the dumbest laws and law enforcement anywhere in the US.
We are such a small niche in the Action Cam world, we will never be catered to. From all the test footage I have seen so far, I like the Stealth a whole lot better than the new HD. Even though it may look big, the Stealth is really not noticeable on the helmet. The worst part about the Drift is the shitty audio quality. The mic takes a lot of "playing with" to get decent sound and not a ton of wind noise. Even though this is something that could be easily fixed with a firmware upgrade.
VIO will give you a $100 dollar voucher if you like them on Facebook and then simply ask them for it. They did it for me anyways. I use the Drift Stealth and its pretty good.
It's not the most straightforward system but you could use the GoPro (mounted on the outside of your helmet) in combination with a digital voice recorder. That way you get good video and good sound, as you have a specialized video recorder, and a specialized audio recorder. And nothing will be in your face :)
@gpzDave I thought about that but it would be too much of a hassle when its time to edit. I like the Drifts because if i have multiple Drifts I can pair them all with the same remote so the videos should be pretty much in sync when I go to edit them. I'm seriously leaning toward the Drift.
You should look into the Contour+. It has an external microphone jack, so you can plug a mic in, and have that just in your helmet. I haven't used one, but I'm sure they are solid as my Contour 720P is solid. You can also get a waterproof case for them, I think, so if you get caught in rain it won't affect it. And you can rotate the lens any direction, so you can lay the camera flat, or on its side..I think it's better suited for your use.
@Jolt57 ya but the cameras $500 $30 to $40 for the water proof case and another 20 bucks for the mic. so at the end of the day if he orders it he spending $600+ on camera just so he can vlog.
@13RuffRyder: I don't believe he said hes on a budget. I know its expensive..but I was just tossing the idea out. I personally don't like the GoPro as its too big, and I am a dirt biker so riding tight woods with this big camera is not good for me. Which is why I went to Contour, which is why I recommend them.
@Jolt57 oh no i totaly agree but if your gonna spend that much on a camera to use for specifically vloging id get the 'vio pov hd'. i forgot to mention in my reply to you that thats what i was comparing the contour to lol sorry.

Don't get the Vio POV- very disappointed in it.
As far as not connecting anything to a helmet, must vary by State. A sheriff's deputy here had no problem with it.
