Can anyone deny that this is a simply beautiful song? No sign of overproduction, no synths, no special effects, just guitar, bass, drums and wonderful melodies.
@MichaelsPortraits Let me guess. You got married to the prom queen and now you drive home from work with a beer between your legs and a few breath mints in the ashtray wondering was it worth it? Me, Im 43 going on 17.
Here's a seemingly "random" but necessary comment: Michael Anthony surely added his valuable part(s): his bass playing, but especially his phenomenal harmonies! He added SO much to their sound with is fantastic voice.
This is as close to Van Halen's debut as they're ever going to get~As a writer myself, I found/find that a natural progression of talent is a inescapable fact of life. One can't help but grow as a writer even if they don't want to~It's just like our bodies growing~One experiences things that get written about and shared and the simple things in life take a back seat to the more adventureous things in life and that's the same way it is in music~Thank goodness Van Halen was able to record music!
@rodtorkelson: You know, I never thought about it, but this totally sounds like a Townsend song, had he gone in a more "metal" direction (versus simply hard rock). The 'take down' part, where they go quiet with light guitar licks, etc. We hear some of that in Tommy, a more complex arrangement, that would lead into another song (2:20 etc).
That's what I've always loved about this era of VH,it was rocking but in a very original way, they had a guitar god that didn't overplay his talents (no 9 minutes 'widddly widdly' fret wank solos here ;)) who still understood the the power of a good crunching sabbathesque riff, add DLR and Michael and Alex to the mix and it's a winner.
The early albums just don't sound like any other rock band, the Townsend comparison is spot on.
In my humble opinion there are only a couple of handfuls of albums worth just putting on and letting them play through, and this is one of them! Thanks Drew! Peace!
One of my all-time favorites

Great song. I hear some "The Who" influence in this one.

I just wanted to say I HATE the Van Hagar stuff. And, I'm from St. Louis where Sammy is treated like royalty.

@bigtmilano12 A true VH fan likes both Dave and Sammy.
