i asked my mom at the drive thru at chick fil a this morning what was the most popular music bac in the 90's and she said that grunge shit and i said no mom your shit
theres a reason glam lasted longer than grunge.. to this day glam bands can still go out and sell with a loyal following 20, 30 ys later.. its a shame glam had to die. there was such a demand for glam that it got to big.. in a weird way glam devoured itself.. for every great glam band 5 shitty bands got their 15 mins of fame.
@davidallenroth Thats funny cause Nirvana and the rest of the grunge bands came and wiped glam off the face of the map. Do you really think terrible bands like Twisted Sister, Ratt, Europe and Poison could compete with Nirvana, Alice and Chains, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam? No, because nobody is really buying glam music and Albums from Seattle bands are still best sellers and more people remember grunge because the music was actually good, loser:P
@seattlefcfan11 everyone always talks about the big money makers man go listen to some green river and malfunktion and the umen and learn what real grunge is and skin yard can't forget them
@seattlefcfan11 good music is all about taste. Some people like a specific type of music, others don't. Ratt debut albums sold about 4 million copies or something. That's not bad. Poison sucked i agree but some glam was quite heavy and good. And i like some grunge bands as well. Alice In Chains was a great band
Kurt Cobain is amazing & Nirvana doesn't sound in any way like any of that "grunge" shyt! This video is off. Nirvana is like so different & it's in its own category of rock atleast to me. & those guys need to stfu cuz their guitar playing is great & not lame
@debbiecakezify Oh comeon pal, don't be such a fanatic. I love Nirvana too. And I agree that the grunge label was stupid for the scene. All of those bands sounded different, especially Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. However, the label was designed around Nirvana. So, they are the most "grunge" by definition. Angst-filled lyrics, sludgy/sloppy guitars, lots of distortion, dirty, raw sound. They were the stereotypical grunge band. Its ok, you can still like them.
@debbiecakezify And, Kurt was a sloppy guitar player. By a technical definition, Kurt was the worst guitar player of that scene. He wasn't sonically proficient in any way. However, some people, myself included, tend to enjoy the sloppy, raw sound of his messy guitar playing. Jerry Cantrell didn't call him lame, he just said he was a crappy guitar player. He's kind of right. And, finally, in my last post there was a typo. It meant to say "oh come on pal." Good day.
@debbiecakezify For sure. If everyone cared about sounding professional all of the time then concerts would be boring. Sometimes you just need to break shit and be loud. That was Nirvana. And they were very passionate about their music. That sets them apart from any ordinary garage band. Nice that you're not a jerk commenter like so much of youtube. Have a good day.
@musicallycorrect94 I think that was kind of the point. I think Kurt was probably playing sloppy on purpose just to get more of that darker and grittier grunge sound. And it worked. Maybe Kurt really was a great guitar player. He just didn't try to sound melodic.
@nickelodeon8911 It was definitely his trademark. And yes it worked for him. However, I wouldn't go so far as to say he was a great guitar player. Listen to his covers. He didn't write those so you get an accurate representation of what he can do. He misses a lot of chords. Not a huge deal. He was a talented songwriter.

Blah blah blah party get women, basically: "I have nothing to say so I will just talk about superficial bullshit".
@thespecter2 So it's "idiotic" for bands to play music for fun? Do all bands have to be serious and have a message? A lot of Glam rock is full of Blues influences. Listen to Cinderella, Poison, Great White, Hanoi Rocks, Faster Pussycat etc.
@StanHowser Nothing is wrong with it, it is just asinine. It is music marketed for kids. Kind of like LMFAO, Justin Beiber, Hanson, Camillionare, Pretty Ricky, Soulja Boy, etc. They have nothing to say and never will. For kids, it is fine. All those bands you mentioned are just silly man, c'mon. No one in the blues community takes that shit seriously. It is a joke. Blues influences? They happen to use guitars, that is the only blues influence.
Grunge didn't kill glam metal...all the older bands like KISS, Queen, Judas Priest, etc. came back in the early 90's with return-to-form really dark music, and then grunge took over with even darker rock.
@wwerulestna I don't care for that shit dude. Not cool to call Grunge music "dark rock." Whats wrong with you? Grunge was all about pulling people from the pit of despair in life, and telling them to keep on keeping on. Grunge was about taking on this life, and not quitting, not even when the chips are down. There was nothing dark about it. Just because it had a in your face tune, it has to be dark? You're crazy. I think you're thinking of heavy metal, hip hop, and rock & roll!
Evenflow is a great song. It covers a sad topic (sympathetic to an unwanted human being, though, so it's a song of compassion) but the music remains upbeat so it almost has a misleading vibe.
Oh, and Pantera must have never received that "memo" about Grunge killing thrash metal. How's come they never mentioned Sykotik Sinfoney on this show?
I don't buy that Grunge "killed" hair metal. It had been around for years so it was gonna die out sooner or later. Most of the top bands like Twisted Sister, Motley, Poison, Van Halen, Ratt and Def Lep had already or were about to break-up before Smells Like Teen Spirit. Plus its a well documented fact that record labels were already planning the alternative shift back in the 80's before Nirvana were worth knowing and GnR had already toned down the glam ecstatic so the change wasn't that sudden.
@JonLambert89 That's exactly right. By 1990, the hair metal genre was already heavily in decline. The grunge movement still needed a poster-boy though, someone to helm the ship. That's where Nirvana came in. They were the catalyst that helped speed along the process.
grunge is real and raw and you get to really relate to people like Kurt and Layne through their music, glam/hair metal is fake and an act with no real substance
At least the 80's was fun. They might have worn make up, but at least they didn't cry about everything. Most songs didn't have much substance, but musicians and singers were amazing in the 80's. Their goal was to make fun music and push their voices and instruments to the limits. The grunge era was the music worlds period.
i think its bullshit how they bag on grunge like its a mistake.... i think the biggest mistake in music fashion wise was the 80s glam scene... it was so fucking gay... and only a fraction of the music was even good
@LiquidSnake2014 And now, the present, it's the whole Metalcore, screamo, deathcore, and Emo scene bull shit. It's just like the 80's, but wayyyy worse.
@TygerOfPanTang90 They are pretty good, But the vocalist kinda of annoys me :/ and the sound is sort of too clean. It's like Pop Grunge. or some sort. Still pretty good i would say though :) Thanks for the share!
Yeah I guess I know what you mean...I thought the same thing at first, but now I'm totally addicted to em.
Milk Teeth is my fav song! Sure there is a pop approch to the music, but you know, it's not Mudhoney nor will it ever be. But I'm glad that you dig it a bit! ;)
@TygerOfPanTang90 Well maybe after i listen to them constantly i'll get used to them lol I do like what they are about, Grunge and stuff. So that is enough for me. :) *POKES* :O
@charlieliberal hahaha!!! Rises?? where to?? nirvana, soundgarden, mother love bone, green river, alice in chains, screaming trees ... where the hell they are?? Those bands doesn't exist anymore!! While Hair/Glam bands STILL ROCKIN: POISON, MOTLEY CRUE, RATT, EUROPE, BON JOVI, KISS, WASP, WHITE LION, WHITE SNAKE, TWISTED SISTER, DOKKEN .. they all STILL ROCKING!!!
The ultimate lesson here is that VH-1 sucks flaccid microdick. A bunch of lame comedians delivering lame one liners, taking camera time from Dee Snider? How about having someone from a grunge band talk about the music?
Look at all these talentless assholes (except Tom Morello, amazing guitarist, and Craig Ferguson, he's pretty funny) picking at "grunge" bands. They're part of the reason it failed. They didn't listen to the music, they couldn't see past the clothes and fashion.
@34bostonceltic lol you still just cant quit sucking Axl Roses' tiny dick can you, haha if the 80's are coming back....why did it take 15 years to make Chinese Democracy lol OH and you speak off Kurt Cobain being dead....what about Kevin DuBrow of Quiet Riot. FUCKER IS DEAD TOO. I GUESS HE COULD NOT TAKE THE PRESSURE OF BEING A BLATANT LAME COCKROCKER SO HE OVERDOSED ON DRUGS. peace, love, rock..
@34bostonceltic Your right the 80's are coming back, who the fuck requested that? I am going to start by guessing you haha. You know whats funny about that happening though, everyone in the 80's hated it, even those bands. So now that they are coming back they are all dressing flannel and wearing doc martins ?? Strange if you ask me. They must of also liked what it was about
@34bostonceltic HAHAHa you punkass son of a bitch. glammy ass faggot...go put hair spray in your hair and paint your naills. oh and ratt, tesla suck they're washed up. you fucking cunt. lol and by the way i dont fucking cry because i dont have a cool car..lol because i dont fucking care bitch..i'm living on my own.what do you do.still live with your mommy and daddy. say hello to them for me...oh and hairmetal has been dead for 20years.. Oh and rolling stones did a cover on Nirvana too.
@equilibrium0994 the 1st song is "jeremy" by pearl jam. 2nd song-idk but its from mudhoney lol. 3rd-"my wave" by soundgarden. 4th-"them bones" by alice in chains. 5th- "heart-shaped box" by nirvana. 6th-"smells like teen spirit" by nirvana. 7th-"evenflow" by pear jam. 8th (and last)-"nearly lost you" by screaming trees.
so glad i grew up in the early 90's...explosion of creativity in music, fashion, and film. By 95 it was all over and there hasn't been anything like it since
@34bostonceltic Thanks. Yeah, I like my hair. I started growing it out when I was 4 because I read the hair book by Dr. Seuss and I think they had someone with really long hair that stretched out over cities, and I thought that was just so cool. Though now I like long hair also because of grunge, because dudes look so good with long messy hair.
@34bostonceltic Ha, wow, I noticed it hit it once after I put it up on youtube. I'll have to watch it again. Short hair has always been a pet peeve of mine for some reason.
@34bostonceltic Yeah, that's the show. No, I just like this stuff a whole bunch and have found out about a bunch of stuff. I plan on moving to Seattle though. Seems pretty cool. Total bohemian vibes. Ha, I even uploaded a video of myself headbanging to a Soundgarden song, just for fun. I just found this grunge forum too, it has all the old bands and all the new bands, and they even have an emo hate thread to make fun of the whiney, complainey, angsty 2000s emo and trends.
@34bostonceltic Ha, yeah I'm totally excited about getting my whole music thing going. I don't know who told you grunge was supposed to make you miserable, but they're clearly a poser. There is this one part in Hype! where the Young Fresh Fellows are walking along a beach holding hands and smiling saying "Do we look cynical to you?" oh, and you should check out Almost Live!, a Seattle sketch show that has the grungers come by and make fun of themselves every so often. So down to earth.
@34bostonceltic HAHAHA, it is not supposed to make you miserable, you must have just heard the stereotypes or been a follower of the labels or something. It's pretty freaking great, the ENERGY, so powerful, the moshing is freeing too, seriously you should try to get into it. It's great. It was fun for the musicians, that's why they did it. Yes, I've been practicing guitar, and trying to get ready to eventually form a band. If you can't get happy off of it, then I feel bad for you.
@34bostonceltic And grunge rockers make fun of all those stereotypes. It's pretty dang funny if you think about it. They were all so laidback. Watch the movie Hype! They're all laughing at the stereotypes because they themselves make fun of uptight agry people, and in an Alice in Chains interview, they make fun of that and say "What like we would be all angry like Danzig" and start laughing because the though is just so ridiculous.
@34bostonceltic It's not at all about that. It makes me so freaking happy, that's why I listen to it. It was about being real and passionate. They talked about happiness to and the beauty of life and art and the greatness of passion. Quotes from the movie Hype! talk about how they only did it because it was fun,and from a song "Well is there any more for the people who try, to get up on stage without living a lie, and look to the audience to help them along, and make a moment out of every song!"
@34bostonceltic You probably haven't heard that much grunge. It's so diverse. Emo sounds like wooshing swirling synthesizers with whiney vocals talking about cutting yourself. It doesn't even sound rock related. It's too soft, like there are no guitars, drums, or basses. Then if you listen to Tad, which is the grungiest of the grunge, very heavy metal, you can't even compare. Plus, they were all influenced by 80s metal, they just took the stupidity out of it. Nirvana did a Kiss cover.
@34bostonceltic You're talking about emo. Eddie Vedder even said in Hype! "Glossy print ad with a fancy red car and background and they're saying something about grunge, you think people are going to go out and buy this car?! They're going to look at this ad and go fuck you!" Grunge never died, listen to Violent Soho, Pet Salad, Sick Sick Sister, the Chocolate, Paradox etc. Grunge rockers spit on those who complain about stupid things, and glam rockers were the ones who talked about fancy cars
GRUNGE IS a 90's era i couldnt see it nor would i want it anywhere else. Althought its an 90's era its kinda timeless. Grunge wasnt a style it is now and forever will be a way of FREEKIN LIFE!!! CHYEAH! lol
@34bostonceltic lol that's right im not going to worry..because fucking hair metal is never ever making a comeback..lol thanks to that "so-called" pussy kurt cobain for mainstreaming alt rock..hey ever heard of the saying.".lighting never strikes in the same place twice" well hair metal had its start now it wont come back. THANK GOD!!! er I mean thank Kurt Cobain....hair metal is such a fucking abomination to rock.well abomination to music.it had its time now its time for something new
Don't get me wrong by the way, I like Nirvana, but try and listen to Facelift by Alice in Chains and tell me these guys didn't deserve a mention in videos like this.
Its strange to me how the two best selling grunge bands of the 90's (Nirvana and Pearl Jam) Were not the best two bands of the 90's. The best two were Stone Temple Pilots, and # 1 in my book Alice in CHAINS!!!!
@kusai5555 No problem! If you like Mudhoney, i suggest checking out Green River too. Has the same singer and...drummer i believe, and 2 or 3 guys from Pearl Jam. That was the first real grunge act.
@Lukeinator64 Actually Green River has the same singer and guitarist as Mudhoney, then the guitarist was replaced by one of the guys who would be in Mother Love Bone, while two other guys were already in there, then Green River Split, Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone was formed, the singer of Mother Love Bone died, one of those three guys went on to Love Battery, while the other two formed Pearl Jam and Temple of the Dog with two members of Soundgarden, one of which is now also in Pearl Jam.
@KristinNirvana lol or that. Some pretty serious knowledge going on there. Impressive. Also, don't know if you know, but there's a few newer grungy bands you might dig. Check out Violent Soho and for some more laid back Radiohead/Nirvana stuff, search for LCF (the band) on Facebook. Pretty cool.
@Lukeinator64 I love violent Soho! I always thought they'd be the ones to bring it all back, if it will come back. I'll have to check out LCF. Oh, and the other two people in Temple of the Dog are also in Pearl Jam, and the 2nd guitarist for Nirvana was then the bassist for Soundgarden. Friends playing music together. Pet Salad are my favorite new band, very grungy, I found them on myspace, and Sick Sick Sister is a girl led grunge band from Portland, then there's The Chocolate, Paradox, etc.
@KristinNirvana I doubt grunge will ever really come back, but I know that it'll definitely have traces around for a long while. Lord knows Nirvana has and will influence bands for the next 30 years at least.
@Lukeinator64 Ya if it doesn't come back, then at least there will be kids like me spreading it around in the underground for a long time. If I have kids, I'm going to teach them about it, my parents didn't teach me about it because they didn't know about it because me and my brother were born in the early 90s. I'm so moving to Seattle. The only new band off of Subpop I've found that sounds rock is Pissed Jeans. It's so precious to have good music in the mainstream as well as underground. Oh well
@KristinNirvana hahaha you sound like someone I could get along with. And yeps. My brother showed me Nirvana, but all the other bands and obscurities were a solo trip for me. And I also plan on heading out to Seattle at some point too, music scene is the best out there. Maybe i'll see you round one dayXD
@Lukeinator64 Ha, my brother indirectly showed me of grunge, then he started telling me a few things about it, then I got even more involved than him and found out about the more obscure stuff, then started telling him about it, and we both told our parents about it, now they like it because of us. I went to Seattle last year, cool vibes, even saw some long haired flannel clad dudes, hope grunge is still around a lot there, it was always meant to at least be in Seattle.
everybody knows that nirvana was the best band of the 90's.after kurt's death, music became crap.many people were tired of pop music and glam metal.nirvana stood up against the music that was pure marketing and style,in fact nirvana changed rock music forever and most modern bands are an influence of nirvana.
Hell I missed the damn 1990s, what a great year. But come on, don't slam 80s metal. 80's rock was badass too,. Not all bands of the 1980s cared about makeup. Just listen to Dokken or other 80's metal bands that had the fashion but they weren't about the makeup, and even if they were? They were still a damn good band.

@LiquidSnake2014 And now, the present, it's the whole Metalcore, screamo, deathcore, and Emo scene bull shit. It's just like the 80's, but wayyyy worse.
We need a new and REAL scene like Grunge again.

But I'm glad that you dig it a bit! ;)

The ultimate lesson here is that VH-1 sucks flaccid microdick. A bunch of lame comedians delivering lame one liners, taking camera time from Dee Snider? How about having someone from a grunge band talk about the music?
selenite1 4 months ago
Look at all these talentless assholes (except Tom Morello, amazing guitarist, and Craig Ferguson, he's pretty funny) picking at "grunge" bands. They're part of the reason it failed. They didn't listen to the music, they couldn't see past the clothes and fashion.

jimcobb3 5 months ago
@34bostonceltic Thanks. Yeah, I like my hair. I started growing it out when I was 4 because I read the hair book by Dr. Seuss and I think they had someone with really long hair that stretched out over cities, and I thought that was just so cool. Though now I like long hair also because of grunge, because dudes look so good with long messy hair.
KristinNirvana 5 months ago
@34bostonceltic Ha, wow, I noticed it hit it once after I put it up on youtube. I'll have to watch it again. Short hair has always been a pet peeve of mine for some reason.
KristinNirvana 5 months ago
@34bostonceltic Yeah, that's the show. No, I just like this stuff a whole bunch and have found out about a bunch of stuff. I plan on moving to Seattle though. Seems pretty cool. Total bohemian vibes. Ha, I even uploaded a video of myself headbanging to a Soundgarden song, just for fun. I just found this grunge forum too, it has all the old bands and all the new bands, and they even have an emo hate thread to make fun of the whiney, complainey, angsty 2000s emo and trends.
KristinNirvana 5 months ago
@34bostonceltic Ha, yeah I'm totally excited about getting my whole music thing going. I don't know who told you grunge was supposed to make you miserable, but they're clearly a poser. There is this one part in Hype! where the Young Fresh Fellows are walking along a beach holding hands and smiling saying "Do we look cynical to you?" oh, and you should check out Almost Live!, a Seattle sketch show that has the grungers come by and make fun of themselves every so often. So down to earth.
KristinNirvana 5 months ago
@34bostonceltic HAHAHA, it is not supposed to make you miserable, you must have just heard the stereotypes or been a follower of the labels or something. It's pretty freaking great, the ENERGY, so powerful, the moshing is freeing too, seriously you should try to get into it. It's great. It was fun for the musicians, that's why they did it. Yes, I've been practicing guitar, and trying to get ready to eventually form a band. If you can't get happy off of it, then I feel bad for you.
KristinNirvana 5 months ago
@34bostonceltic And grunge rockers make fun of all those stereotypes. It's pretty dang funny if you think about it. They were all so laidback. Watch the movie Hype! They're all laughing at the stereotypes because they themselves make fun of uptight agry people, and in an Alice in Chains interview, they make fun of that and say "What like we would be all angry like Danzig" and start laughing because the though is just so ridiculous.
KristinNirvana 5 months ago
@34bostonceltic It's not at all about that. It makes me so freaking happy, that's why I listen to it. It was about being real and passionate. They talked about happiness to and the beauty of life and art and the greatness of passion. Quotes from the movie Hype! talk about how they only did it because it was fun,and from a song "Well is there any more for the people who try, to get up on stage without living a lie, and look to the audience to help them along, and make a moment out of every song!"
KristinNirvana 5 months ago
@34bostonceltic You probably haven't heard that much grunge. It's so diverse. Emo sounds like wooshing swirling synthesizers with whiney vocals talking about cutting yourself. It doesn't even sound rock related. It's too soft, like there are no guitars, drums, or basses. Then if you listen to Tad, which is the grungiest of the grunge, very heavy metal, you can't even compare. Plus, they were all influenced by 80s metal, they just took the stupidity out of it. Nirvana did a Kiss cover.
KristinNirvana 5 months ago
@34bostinceltic, agreed.
thefallofmaxpayne 5 months ago
@34bostonceltic You're talking about emo. Eddie Vedder even said in Hype! "Glossy print ad with a fancy red car and background and they're saying something about grunge, you think people are going to go out and buy this car?! They're going to look at this ad and go fuck you!" Grunge never died, listen to Violent Soho, Pet Salad, Sick Sick Sister, the Chocolate, Paradox etc. Grunge rockers spit on those who complain about stupid things, and glam rockers were the ones who talked about fancy cars

kusai5555 6 months ago
@kusai5555 No problem! If you like Mudhoney, i suggest checking out Green River too. Has the same singer and...drummer i believe, and 2 or 3 guys from Pearl Jam. That was the first real grunge act.
Lukeinator64 6 months ago
@Lukeinator64 Actually Green River has the same singer and guitarist as Mudhoney, then the guitarist was replaced by one of the guys who would be in Mother Love Bone, while two other guys were already in there, then Green River Split, Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone was formed, the singer of Mother Love Bone died, one of those three guys went on to Love Battery, while the other two formed Pearl Jam and Temple of the Dog with two members of Soundgarden, one of which is now also in Pearl Jam.
KristinNirvana 6 months ago
@KristinNirvana lol or that. Some pretty serious knowledge going on there. Impressive. Also, don't know if you know, but there's a few newer grungy bands you might dig. Check out Violent Soho and for some more laid back Radiohead/Nirvana stuff, search for LCF (the band) on Facebook. Pretty cool.
Lukeinator64 6 months ago
@Lukeinator64 I love violent Soho! I always thought they'd be the ones to bring it all back, if it will come back. I'll have to check out LCF. Oh, and the other two people in Temple of the Dog are also in Pearl Jam, and the 2nd guitarist for Nirvana was then the bassist for Soundgarden. Friends playing music together. Pet Salad are my favorite new band, very grungy, I found them on myspace, and Sick Sick Sister is a girl led grunge band from Portland, then there's The Chocolate, Paradox, etc.
KristinNirvana 6 months ago
@KristinNirvana I doubt grunge will ever really come back, but I know that it'll definitely have traces around for a long while. Lord knows Nirvana has and will influence bands for the next 30 years at least.
Lukeinator64 6 months ago
@Lukeinator64 Ya if it doesn't come back, then at least there will be kids like me spreading it around in the underground for a long time. If I have kids, I'm going to teach them about it, my parents didn't teach me about it because they didn't know about it because me and my brother were born in the early 90s. I'm so moving to Seattle. The only new band off of Subpop I've found that sounds rock is Pissed Jeans. It's so precious to have good music in the mainstream as well as underground. Oh well
KristinNirvana 6 months ago
@KristinNirvana hahaha you sound like someone I could get along with. And yeps. My brother showed me Nirvana, but all the other bands and obscurities were a solo trip for me. And I also plan on heading out to Seattle at some point too, music scene is the best out there. Maybe i'll see you round one dayXD
Lukeinator64 5 months ago
@Lukeinator64 Ha, my brother indirectly showed me of grunge, then he started telling me a few things about it, then I got even more involved than him and found out about the more obscure stuff, then started telling him about it, and we both told our parents about it, now they like it because of us. I went to Seattle last year, cool vibes, even saw some long haired flannel clad dudes, hope grunge is still around a lot there, it was always meant to at least be in Seattle.

everybody knows that nirvana was the best band of the 90's.after kurt's death, music became crap.many people were tired of pop music and glam metal.nirvana stood up against the music that was pure marketing and style,in fact nirvana changed rock music forever and most modern bands are an influence of nirvana.
gregorboca90 7 months ago
Hell I missed the damn 1990s, what a great year. But come on, don't slam 80s metal. 80's rock was badass too,. Not all bands of the 1980s cared about makeup. Just listen to Dokken or other 80's metal bands that had the fashion but they weren't about the makeup, and even if they were? They were still a damn good band.
