Thank you coach. I have struggled with my serve for a long time, and after watching your clip, I am convinced that it is best to go back to step one, relearning and practicing the basics mentioned here and after that, put the fancier power moves such as hip turn, knee bend, jumping up etc ... on top of those basics.
This is very close how I teach people to serve. 15 years ago I almost got thrown of a coaching course saying the word push. Should of marketed it better, oh well.
All this technique business can be.. will be... easier to learn if you go on court and keep your joints really loose. Like a puppet, or rag doll. Let body rotation swing your arm. Feel your hips, shoulders contributing. Don't muscle the ball.
You are giving dangerously incorrect information when you start talking about consciously involving any sort of wrist 'push' or snap. A throwing motion will naturally leave the palm facing the fence (right side for righties) due to pronation. Take a look at slo-mo vids of pros serving... there is no wrist displacement on the serve. The hand pronates right along with the forearm.
Make a really loose-jointed swing, with no racquet, to test this.. the palm will naturally face outward at finish.
@drumsfightingandstuf You are correct about pronation. And I feel the best way to communicate the idea of pronation (and why it is biomechanically correct) is to do what I suggested above: Stand up, put your racquet down, turn slightly sideways, and with really loose joints swing forward. Watch what happens to your hand; It will be facing outward. IConveying the basic idea doesn't get any more natural or simple than that. You can'y argue against what the body does naturally.
I really like this video not just for beginners but everyone can benefit from it. Especially love the sock contraption. Going to make one myself. Son could use the help:) Thx!

Superb video! The mentioning of pronation that helps the progression of top spin serve is true. You need the pronation for a good kick serve.

Core Rotation. Passive Arm.

I know this is for absolute beginners, but you're not fully pronating. After hitting, the other side of your racquet should be visible to the camera.
Again, I know it's for brand new people so you don't want to be too complicated. Do you have any drills for developing that proper pronation?
